  • In this paper, we describe the optimization of the link-level performance and the complexity of floating-point and fixed-point methods in IEEE 802.16e OFDMA/TDD mobile modem. In floating-point design, we propose the channel estimation methods for downlink traffic channel and select the optimized method using computer simulation. So we also propose efficent algorithms for time and frequency synchronization, Digital Front End and CINR estimation scheme to optimize the system performance. Furthermore, we describe fixed-point method of uplink traffic and control channels. The superiority of the proposed algorithm is validated using the performances of Detection, False Alarm, Missing Probability and Mean Acquisition Time, PER Curve, etc. For fixed-point design, we propose an efficient methodology for optimized fixed-point design from floating-point At last, we design fixed-point of traffic channel, time and frequency synchronization, DFE block in uplink and downlink. The tradeoff between performance and complexity are optimized through computer simulations.

  • Formulation of the far-field method for the prediction of time-mean hydrodynamic force and moment acting on a 3-D surface-piercing body in waves is reviewed. It is found that the inequality between the weight of the floating body and its buoyancy force permits the replacement of the fluid particles inside the control surface by the fluid particles outside the control surface. Under such circumstances, momentum exchanges across the control surface make the time-mean value of the time rate of the momentum of the fluid inside the control surface non-vanishing. It is a second-order quantity which is hard to calculate by the far-field method. The drift forces and moments on half-immersed ellipsoids are calculated by both the far-field method and the near-field method. The discrepancy between two numerical results is presented and discussed.

  • In ocean industry, free surface type ART (Anti Roll tank) system has been widely used to suppress the roll motion of floating structures. In those, various obstacles have been devised to obtain the sufficient damping and to enhance the controllability of freely rushing water inside the tank. Most of previous researches have paid on the development of simple mathematical formula for coupled ship-ARTs analysis although other numerical and experimental approaches exist. Little attention has been focused on the use of 3D panel method for preliminary design of free surface type ART despite its advantages in computational time and general capacity for hydrodynamic damping estimation. This study aims at developing a potential theory based hydrodynamic code for the analysis of floating structure with baffled ARTs. The sloshing in baffled tanks is modeled through the linear potential theory with FE discretization and it coupled with hydrodynamic equations of floating structures discretized by BEM and FEM, resulting in direct coupled FE-BE formulation. The general capacity of proposed formulation is emphasized through the coupled hydrodynamic analysis of floating structure and sloshing inside baffled ARTs. In addition, the numerical methods for natural sloshing frequency tuning and estimation of hydrodynamic damping ratio of liquid sloshing in baffled tanks undergoing wave exiting loads are developed through the proposed formulation. In numerical examples, effects of natural frequency tuning and baffle ratios on the maximum and significant roll motions are investigated.

  • Drifting Cups on a Meandering Stream (Kyokusui-no-En) is a Poetry Party that had its origin In ancient China, and was introduced to Japan passing through Korea. The flow of the meandering stream was made clear using the flow visualization techniques, surface floating method, PTV and the numerical simulation. At the same time, the motions of floating cup, the floating speed, relating speed and the trajectory of the cup were also analysed by using an originally developed image processing technique. Based on these researches, the model channel was considered. To make this party interesting the channel must has the characteristic that the drifting cups take the random pass and stagnant at the unexpected place. This model channel is satisfied with these conditions and the fluid mechanics consideration is performed on the both points of the experimental visualization and numerical simulation.

  • Typical technical issues associated with Floating LNG (FLNG: FSRU and LNG FPSO) design are categorized in terms of global performance evaluation. Although many proven technologies developed through LNG carrier and oil FPSO projects are available for FLNG design, we are still faced with several technical challenges to clear for successful FLNG projects. In this paper, some of the challenges encountered during development of the floating LNG facility (i.e. LNG FPSO and FSRU) will be reviewed together with their investigated solution. At the same time, research of design improvement including new LNG-related technologies such as combined containment system will be presented to overcome the unrevealed challenges for the FLNG development.

  • A semi-analytical numerical approach for the effective structural dynamic response analysis of spar floating substructure for offshore wind turbine subject to wave-induced excitation is introduced in this paper. The wave-induced rigid body motions at the center of mass are analytically solved using the dynamic equations of rigid ship motion. After that, the flexible structural dynamic responses of spar floating substructure for offshore wind turbine are numerically analyzed by letting the analytically derived rigid body motions be the external dynamic loading. Restricted to one-dimensional sinusoidal wave excitation at sea state 3, pitch and heave motions are considered. Through the numerical experiments, the time responses of heave and pitch motions are solved and the wave-induced dynamic displacement and effective stress of flexible floating substructure are investigated. The hydrodynamic interaction between wave and structure is modeled by means of added mass and wave damping, and its modeling accuracy is verified from the comparison of natural frequencies obtained by experiment with a 1/100 scale model.

  • JPEG 2000 is used as an alternative to solve the blocking artifact problem with the existing still image compression JPEG algorithm. However, it has shortcomings such as longer floating point computation time and more complexity in the procedure of enhancing the image compression rate and decompression rate. To compensate for these we implemented with hardware the JPEG 2000 algorithm's filter part which requires a lot of floating point computation. This DWT Filter[1] chip is designed on the basis of Daubechies 9/7 filter[6] and is composed of 3-stage pipeline system to optimize the performance and chip size. Our implemented Filter was 7 times faster than software based Filter in the floating point computation.

  • Floating-point images that express pixel information as real numbers are used in HDR images. There have been various researches on efficient median filter algorithms, but most of them are applicable to 8-bit depth images and there are only a few number of algorithms applicable to floating-point images, including Gil and Werman's algorithm. In this paper, we propose a median filter algorithm that works efficiently on floating-point images by improving Kim's algorithm, which improved Gil and Werman's algorithm. Experimental results show that the execution time is improved by about 10% compared to the Kim's algorithm by reducing the redundant work for the repetitively used binary search tree and applying the inverted index.

  • Floating LiDAR systems provide significant savings in cost and time compared to the fixed meteorological mast measurement type, and have the advantage of being able to be deployed in various locations due to less restriction on the depth of the installation site. However, to use the wind data collected by a floating LiDAR system commercially, verification procedure is required to ensure that the collected data have sufficient availability. The Carbon Trust OWA roadmap presents guidelines in three stages for the reliability of the wind data collected using a floating LiDAR system. Companies developing wind farms are requesting at least Stage 2 (pre-commercial stage) presented by OWA, and many overseas companies are leading the domestic and overseas markets. In this paper, we introduce the case of OWA Stage 2 certification for the commercial operation of floating LiDAR systems.

  • We propose a three-dimensional (3D) streaming system based on a lamina display that can convey field information in real-time by creating floating 3D images that can satisfy the accommodation cue. The proposed system is mainly composed of three parts, namely: a 3D vision camera unit to obtain and provide RGB and depth data in real-time, a 3D image engine unit to realize the 3D volume with a fast response time by using the RGB and depth data, and an optical floating unit to bring the implemented 3D image out of the system and consequently increase the sense of presence. Furthermore, we devise the streaming method required for implementing augmented reality (AR) images by using a multilayered image, and the proposed method for implementing AR 3D video in real-time non-face-to-face communication has been experimentally verified.
