The mechanical properties and failure mechanisms of through-the-thickness stitched plain weave glass fabric/polyurethane foam/epoxy composites were studied. Hybrid composites were fabricated using resin infusion process (RIP). Stitched sandwich composite increased drastically the flexural properties as compared with the unstitched fabrics. The breaking of stitching yarns was observed during the flexural test and this failure mode yielded relatively high flexural properties. Composites with stitched sandwich structure improved the mechanical properties with increasing the number of stitching yarns. From this study, it was concluded that proper combination of stitching density and types of stitching fiber is important factor for through-the-thickness stitched composite panels.
The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between Barcol hardness (H) and flexural modulus (E) degradation of composite sheets subjected to flexural fatigue. The resin transfer molding (RTM) method was used to produce 3-mm-thick composite sheets with fiber volume fraction of 44%. The composite sheets were subjected to flexural fatigue tests and Barcol scale hardness measurements. After these tests, the stiffness and hardness degradations were investigated in the composite sheets that failed after around one million cycles (stage III). Flexural modulus degradation values were in the range of 0.41-0.42 with the corresponding measured hardness degradation values in the range of 0.25-0.32 for the all fatigued composite sheets. Thus, a 25% reduction in the initial hardness and a 41% reduction in the initial flexural modulus can be taken as the failure criteria. The results showed that a reasonably well-defined relationship between Barcol hardness and flexural modulus degradation in the distance range.

A series of 15 reinforced concrete beams was tested to evaluate the flexural performance of the repaired RC beams. the key parameters for this study were the repair materials, polymer/cementitious materials, in addition to the strengthening material, steel plates and carbon fiber sheets. The repaired specimens failed by a typical flexural mode. showing minor interface failure. The results show that epoxy, polyester resins and latex modified cementitous mortars are effective for repairing the concrete beams. However, the flexural preformance of the strengthened beams are varied depending on the repaired materal.

This paper dscribes an experimental investigation into the cause of flexural-shear failure in RC beams. The experimental variables are bottom flange width and tension bar location. Then these test results were compared and analyzed to deduce the major cause of critical-shear cracking. As a result, it was found that the propagation of the critical shear crack depended exclusively on the intensity of horizontal cracking.
Continuous fiber ceramic composites (CFCCs) have advantages over monolithic ceramics : Silicon Nitride composites are not well used for application because of their low fracture toughness and fracture strength, but CFCCs exhibit increased toughness for damage tolerance, and relatively high stiffness in spite of low specific weight. Thus it is important to characterize the fracture resistance and properties of new CFCCs materials. Tensile and flexural tests were carried out for mechanical properties and the fracture resistance behavior of a SCS6 fiber reinforced Si$_3$N$_4$ matrix CFCC was evaluated. The results indicated that CFCC composite exhibit a rising R curve behavior in flexural test. The fracture toughness was about 4.8 MPa$.$m$\^$1/2 , which resulted in a higher value of the fracture toughness because of fiber bridging. Mechanical properties as like the elastic modulus, proportional limit and the ultimate strength in a flexural test are greater than those in a tensile test. Also a numerical modeling of failure process was accomplished for a flexural test. This numerical results provided a good simulation of the cumulative fracture process of the fiber and matrix in CFCCs.

In this study, flexural tests of granite reinforced with titanium metal rods were carried out to repair and restore the damaged stone-made cultural heritage, the Stone Pagoda of the Mireuksa Temple Site. A total of twelve specimens were tested. The primary test parameters are the reinforcement ratio and the location of the reinforcement. For restoration, epoxy resin was used for joining the separated stones, and titanium metal rods were used for structural reinforcement. Test results showed that the flexural failure took place in specimens with a reinforcement ratio of 0.8% or less, and shear failure occurred when the reinforcement ratio was 1.68% or more. The peak load of the reinforced stone was found to be highly related to the reinforcement ratio. The peak load increased with increasing the reinforcement ratio. Also, the flexural behaviors of the reinforced stones were affected by the location of the reinforcement. Based on the test results, this study recommends the reinforcement ratio of the reinforced granite to induce ductile behavior.
This paper performs an experimental study on the flexural behavior of preloaded reinforced self-compacted concrete beams strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymers CFRP. A group of six preloaded strengthened beams was investigated along with one unstrengthened beam used as a reference beam RB. All beams have the same dimensions and reinforcement details: three beams are strengthened with CFRP laminates against flexural failure and three beams are strengthened with CFRP sheets. For simulating actual conditions, the beams are loaded before strengthening. Then, after strengthening, the beams are tested for flexural strength using 4-point loads where cracked and ultimate load and failure mode, along with load-deflection relation are recorded. To study the different configurations of strengthening, one layer, two layers, and U-wrap formation of laminates and sheets are considered. The results show that strengthing the RC beams using CFRP is an effective method to increase the beam's capacity by 47% up to 153% where deflection is reduced by 5%-80%. So, the beams strengthened with CFRP laminates have higher load capacity and lower ductility in comparison with the beams strengthened with CFRP sheets.

An energy balance procedure is developed to incorporate the effects of earthquake duration which involves the effect of cyclic loading and the corresponding cumulative plastic deformation. Particular emphasis is given to the flexural failure of non-seismically designed columns of reinforced concrete frames. For this, conceptual strength deterioration models for columns, governed by concrete, anchorage failure and longitudinal steel fracture due to low-cycle fatigue, are proposed. It is evident that the energy-based method has good agreement with the experimental data and is able to predict the failure mode.

This paper is aimed to investigate flexural rehabilitation effect o pre-loaded reinforced concrete beams strengthened by carbon fiber sheet. Main Test parameters are reinforcement ratio and the magnitude of pro-loading and seven test beams are analyzed rehabilitation effect by carbon fiber sheet, load-deflection, failure mode, stress of reinforcing bar by the magnitude of pre-loading. Test results show that internal force was showed pre-loaded specimens lower than no-loaded specimens during rehabilitation and changing stiffness was showed in the same was and failure mode showed brittle failure from all specimens.

It is generally known that RC flexural members strengthened by GFRP(Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymers) tend to be failed by premature bond failure near the flexural-shear cracks happened at the mid-span of beams. It is therefore strongly recommended that premature bond failure must be avoided to insure the intended strengthening effects sufficiently. The various methodologies such as increasing bonded length of GFRP and bonding details including U-shape wrappings and epoxy shear-keys are examined in this study. The bonded length of GFRP are calculated based on the assumed bond strengths of epoxy saturating resin. Total six half scale RC beam specimens were constructed and tested to investigate the effectiveness of each methodologies to prevent the bond failure of GFRP. Test results of each specimens are discussed in this paper.
