The safety barrier is installed on road embankment to prevent vehicles from falling into road side slope. Among the safety barrier, flexible guardrails are usually installed. The flexible guardrail generally consists of a protection cross-beam and supporting in-line piles. These guardrail piles are installed nearby slope edge of road embankment because the side area of the road is much narrow. The protection cross-beam absorbs impact energy caused by vehicle collision. The pile-soil interaction also absorbs the rest of the impact energy and then, finally, the flexible guardrail system resists the impact load. This paper aims to investigate the pile-soil interaction subjected to impact load using centrifuge model tests. In this study, a single pile was installed in compacted residual soil and loaded under lateral impact load. An impact loading system was designed and developed available on centrifuge tests. Using this loading system, a parametric study was performed and the parameters include types of loading and ground. Finally, the ultimate bearing capacity of supporting pile under impact load was analyzed using load-displacement curve and soil reaction pressure distributions at ultimate were evaluated and compared with previous studies.
The effect of soil-structure interaction on a single-storey, two-bay space frame resting on a pile group embedded in the cohesive soil (clay) with flexible cap is examined in this paper. For this purpose, a more rational approach is resorted to using the finite element analysis with realistic assumptions. Initially, a 3-D FEA is carried out independently for the frame on the premise of fixed column bases in which members of the superstructure are discretized using the 20-node isoparametric continuum elements. Later, a model is worked out separately for the pile foundation, by using the beam elements, plate elements and spring elements to model the pile, pile cap and soil, respectively. The stiffness obtained for the foundation is used in the interaction analysis of the frame to quantify the effect of soil-structure interaction on the response of the superstructure. In the parametric study using the substructure approach (uncoupled analysis), the effects of pile spacing, pile configuration, and pile diameter of the pile group on the response of superstructure are evaluated. The responses of the superstructure considered include the displacement at top of the frame and moments in the columns. The effect of soil-structure interaction is found to be quite significant for the type of foundation considered in the study. Fair agreement is observed between the results obtained herein using the simplified models for the pile foundation and those existing in the literature based on a complete three dimensional analysis of the building frame - pile foundation - soil system.

In this study design and construction technique for joint-less integral abutment for short to mid span bridges was developed. Expansion of superstructure due to thermal effect was absorbed in the flexible pile-type abutment in stead of expansion joint in the conventional bridges. Design method for pile subject to vertical and horizontal force was proposed. Backfill, approach slab and details of its connection joint with pavement was also proposed.
The effect of soil-structure interaction on a simple single storeyed and two bay space frame resting on a pile group embedded in the cohesive soil (clay) with flexible cap is examined in this paper. For this purpose, a more rational approach is resorted to using the three dimensional finite element analysis with realistic assumptions. The members of the superstructure and substructure are descretized using 20 node isoparametric continuum elements while the interface between the soil and pile is modeled using 16 node isoparametric interface elements. Owing to viability in terms of computational resources and memory requirement, the approach of uncoupled analysis is generally preferred to coupled analysis of the system. However, an interactive analysis of the system is presented in this paper where the building frame and pile foundation are considered as a single compatible unit. This study is focused on the interaction between the pile cap and underlying soil. In the parametric study conducted using the coupled analysis, the effect of pile spacing in a pile group and configuration of the pile group is evaluated on the response of superstructure. The responses of the superstructure considered include the displacement at top of the frame and moments in the superstructure columns. The effect of soil-structure interaction is found to be quite significant for the type of foundation used in the study. The percentage variation in the values of displacement obtained using the coupled and uncoupled analysis is found in the range of 4-17 and that for the moment in the range of 3-10. A reasonable agreement is observed in the results obtained using either approach.

The evolution of smartphones has led to numerous researches in the mechanical behavior of flexible devices. Due to the nano-size of the thin flexible film, nanoindentation is widely used to evaluate its mechanical behaviors, such as elastic modulus, and hardness. However, the commonly used Oliver-Pharr method is not suited for analyzing the indentation force-depth curves of hard films on soft substrates, as the effects of soft substrate is not considered theoretically. In this study, the elastic modulus of the thin film was evaluated with references to other reported models which include the substrate effect, and with calibration of the indentation depth for the pile-ups between the indenter and test surface. We fabricated test samples by deposition of amorphous metal film on polyimide and silicon wafers for verification of modified models.
This paper shows the results of a series of model tests on the behavior of single flexible pile, which is subjected to lateral load, in non-homogeneous Nak-Dong River sands, consisting of two layers. The purpose of the present paper is to investigate the effects of ratio of lower layer thickness to embedded pile length, ratio of soil modulus of upper layer to lower one, and pile head constraint condition on the characteristics of lateral behavior of single pile. These effects can be quantified only by the results of model tests. Based on the results of model tests, in non-homogeneous sand, it was found that the lateral behavior depends upon the ratio of soil modulus of upper layer to lower one. And, in respect of deflection, it was found that the relationship between the deflection ratio of non-homogeneous to homogeneous sand and the ratio of lower layer thickness to embedded pile length can be fitted to exponential function of H/L and lateral load by model tests results. Also, in respect of maximum bending moment, it was found that the relationship H/L and $MBM_{fixed-head}/MBM_{free-head}$ can be fitted to linear function of H/L by model test results.

In this study, pile load tests have been carried out to develop new P-y curves and then, to investigate the effects of pile rigidities on laterally loaded offshore drilled shafts in Incheon marine clay. This paper consists mainly of two parts: the first part, performance of a series of lateral load tests on small- and full-scale piles under one- and two-way loadings and the second part, comparison between the measured and predicted results by using O'Neill's and Matlock's clay models. Based on the results obtained, it is shown that relatively good agreements in bending moments and lateral displacements were obtained between the measured results using calculated P-y curves and predicted ones by O'Neill's and Matlock's clay models. The cases were considered with varying rigidity factors based on pile diameter, length and subgrade soil reaction. Through comparisons, it is found that soil P-y curve influences highly the behavior of flexible pile rather than that of rigid pile.
Pile-to-pilecap connection performance is important as Integral abutment bridges (IABs) have no expansion joints and their flexible weak-axis oriented supporting piles take the role of the expansion joint. This connection may govern the bridge strength and the performance against various lateral loads. The intention of this study is to identify crack propagation patterns when the pile-to-pilecap connection is subjected to lateral loadings and to propose novel connections for improved performance under lateral loadings. In this study, eight different types of connections were developed and modeled, using Abaqus 6.12 to evaluate performances. Three types were developed by strengthening the connections using rebar or steel tube: (i) PennDOT specification; (ii) Spiral rebar; and (iii) HSS tube. Other types were developed by softening the connections using shape modifications: (i) cylindrical hole; (ii) reduced flange; (iii) removed flange; (iv) extended hole; and (v) slot hole connection types. The connections using the PennDOT specification, HSS tube, and cylindrical hole were shown to be ineffective in the prevention of cracks, resulting in lower structural capacities under the lateral load compared to other types. The other developed connections successfully delayed or arrested the concrete crack initiations and propagations. Among the successful connection types, the spiral rebar connection allowed a relatively larger reaction force, which can damage the superstructure of the IABs. Other softened connections performed better in terms of minimized reaction forces and crack prevention.
As the forefront of structural design method, capacity spectrum method can be applied conveniently, and through this method, deformation demand of structure can be considered. However, there is no research for the seismic application in the structure of sheet pile retaining wall to report. Therefore, focusing on laterally loaded stabilizing sheet pile wall, which belongs to flexible cantilever retaining structure and meets the applying requirement of capacity spectrum method from seismic design of building structure, this paper studied an approach of seismic design of sheet pile wall based on capacity spectrum method. In the procedure, the interaction between soil and structure was simplified, and through Pushover analysis, seismic fortification standard was well associated with performance of retaining structure. In addition, by comparing the result of nonlinear time history analysis, it suggests that this approach is applicable.

In-place analysis for offshore platforms is essentially required to make proper design for new structures and true assessment for existing structures, in addition to the structural integrity of platforms components under the maximum and minimum operating loads when subjected to the environmental conditions. In-place analysis have been executed to check that the structural member with all appurtenance's robustness have the capability to support the applied loads in either storm or operating conditions. A nonlinear finite element analysis is adopted for the platform structure above the seabed and pile-soil interaction to estimate the in-place behavior of a typical fixed offshore platform. The SACS software is utilized to calculate the dynamic characteristics of the platform model and the response of platform joints then the stresses at selected members, as well as their nodal displacements. The directions of environmental loads and water depth variations have significant effects in the results of the in-place analysis behavior. The most of bending moment responses of the piles are in the first fourth of pile penetration depth from pile head level. The axial deformations of piles in all load combinations cases of all piles are inversely proportional with penetration depth. The largest values of axial soil reaction are shown at the pile tips levels (the maximum penetration level). The most of lateral soil reactions resultant are in the first third of pile penetration depth from pile head level and approximately vanished after that penetration. The influence of the soil-structure interaction on the response of the jacket foundation predicts that the flexible foundation model is necessary to estimate the force responses demands of the offshore platform with a piled jacket-support structure well.
