Model Reference Adaptive Control of a Flexible Structure

  • In this paper, the model reference adaptive control (MRAC) of a flexible structure is investigated. Any mechanically flexible structure is inherently distributed parameter in nature, so that its dynamics are described by a partial, rather than ordinary, differential equation. The MRAC problem is formulated as an initial value problem of coupled partial and ordinary differential equations in weak form. The well-posedness of the initial value problem is proved. The control law is derived by using the Lyapunov redesign method on an infinite dimensional filbert space. Uniform asymptotic stability of the closed loop system is established, and asymptotic tracking, i. e., convergence of the state-error to zero, is obtained. With an additional persistence of excitation condition for the reference model, parameter-error convergence to zero is also shown. Numerical simulations are provided.

  • The relationship between riding comfort and the properties of flexible polyurethane foam used in car seats was quantitatively illustrated through vibration experiments with humans sitting in car seats, which were vertically shaken by vibrator. Riding comfort was estimated according to SD (Semantic Differential)-method using questionnaire, and was analyzed with a factor analysis which demonstrated the principal factors of riding comfort. At the same time, riding comfort was related to the properties of the flexible polyurethane foam with coefficients of correlation. It was also related to the behaviour of its vibration of humans sitting in the seats. As a result, it was demonstrated that the relationship between riding comfort and the flexible polyurethane foam properties varies according to the frequency of the vibration shaking the human sitting in the seat. and it was demonstrated that the frequency dependence of the relationship is strongly affected by the physical changes of the vibration modes of the human-seat vibration system.

Sliding mode control based on neural network for the vibration reduction of flexible structures

  • A discrete sliding mode control (SMC) method based on hybrid model of neural network and nominal model is proposed to reduce the vibration of flexible structures, which is a robust active controller developed by using a sliding manifold approach. Since the thick boundary layer will reduce the virtue of SMC, the multilayer feed-forward neural network is adopted to model the uncertainty part. The neural network is trained by Levenberg-Marquardt backpropagation. The design objective of the sliding mode surface is based on the quadratic optimal cost function. In course of running, the input signal of SMC come from the hybrid model of the nominal model and the neural network. The simulation shows that the proposed control scheme is very effective for large uncertainty systems.

  • In this paper, control of a planar two-link structurally flexible robotic manipulator executing unconstrained and constrained maneuvers is considered. The dynamic model, which is obtained by using the extended Hamilton's principle and the Galerkin criterion, includes the impact force generated during the transition from unconstrained to constrained segment of the robotic task. A method is presented to obtain the linearized equations of motion in Cartesian space for use in designing the control system. The linear quadratic Gaussian with loop transfer recovery (LQG/LTR) design methodology is exploited to design a robust feedback control system that can handle modeling errors and sensor noise, and operate on Cartesian space trajectory errors. The LQG/LTR compensator together with a feedforward loop is used to control the flexible manipulator. Simulated results are presented for a numerical example.

  • in the present paper, the hydrodynamics properties of a Rahmen type flexible porous breakwater interacting with obliquely or normally incident small amplitude waves are numerically investigated. This system is composed of dual vertical porous membranes hinged at th side edges of a submerged horizontal membrane. The dual vertical membranes are extended downward and hinged at seabed. The effects of permeability, Rahmen type membrane breakwater geometry pre-tensions on membranes, relative dimensionless wave number, and incident Wave headings are thoroughly examined.

Preparation of gold nanoparticle/single-walled carbon nanotube nanohybrids using biologically programmed peptide for application of flexible transparent conducting films

  • In this study, we report a general method for preparation of a one-dimensional (1D) arrangement of Au nanoparticles on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) using biologically programmed peptides as structure-guiding 1D templates. The peptides were designed by the combination of glutamic acid (E), glycine (G), and phenylalanine (F) amino acids; peptides efficiently debundled and exfoliated the SWNTs for stability of the dispersion and guided the growth of the array of Au nanoparticles in a controllable manner. Moreover, we demonstrated the superior ability of 1D nanohybrids as flexible, transparent, and conducting materials. The highly stable dispersion of 1D nanohybrids in aqueous solution enabled the fabrication of flexible, transparent, and conductive nanohybrid films using vacuum filtration, resulting in good optical and electrical properties.

  • A suboptimal output feedback controller is designed and applied to a flexible rotor bearing system in order to control the unstable or lilghtly damped vibrations. The reduced order model is the truncated modal equation of the distributed parameter system obtained through the singular perturbation. The instability problem arising from the spillover effects caused by the uncontrolled high frequency modes is prevented through the constrained optimization by incorporating the spillover term into the performance index. The efficiency of the proposed method is demonstrated experimentally with a flexible rotor by using a magnetic bearing.

  • The paper summarizes the VIV-related research with the focus on flexible riser and pipe models subject to various engineering conditions. First of all, a series of numerical simulations for the purpose of validating the efficiency of FSI solution approach (ANSYS MFX) has been performed. The comparison between the simulation and the experimental data shows that the present FSI solution method is capable of giving acceptable estimation to VIV problems. As a meaningful application to engineering problems, some tentative simulation cases which are difficult to carry out in experiment, such as a flexible pipe with internal flow and multi-assembled pipes, have been successfully carried out. The coupling mechanism between vortex shedding and the VIV has been well interpreted.

  • This paper presents an approach to multiple objective scheduling of flexible manufacturing systems(FMS). The approach is an extension of the scheduling method that formulates scheduling problems using Petrinets, and applies heuristic search to find optimal or near-optimal schedules with a single objective. New evaluation functions are developed to optimize simultaneously the makespan and the total operating cost. A scheduling example is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

  • This paper gives the detail of the work carried out to develop real-time control software for Flexible Manufacturing Systems. A basic design philosophy to implement such software is proposed. The major features are the partitioning of complicated control actions into simplified ones, structured programming and multi-threaded transaction-based tasks. The software operates on the basis of passing task-to-task messages via mailboxes, causing appropriate actions to be taken by each task. Each task represents a separate subprocess so that the subprocesses can be run simultaneously. The task-to-task message could be easily replaced by computer-to-computer communication, using LAN, demonstrating that the software methods developed produce a flexible designs for control software of an FMS. A method of linking such software to simulation software is suggested as a potentially powerful additional design-tool.
