  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors influencing social adaptation of chronic mental illness. The subjects of this study were 190 patients, over the age of 20 with chronic mental illness diagnosed by a physician, and living in Seoul, Korea during May, 2000 to December 2000. The instruments for this study were the social adaptation scale by Wallace (1979), the self-esteem scale by Rogenberg (1965), social support scale by ParkJiWon (1985), coping behavior scale by Shirley Zeitlin (1978), self efficacy scale by Sherer et. al (1982), and Rand mental health inventory(1979). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression. The results of this study are as follows: 1. The level of social adaptation showed moderate (M=3.43). 2. The social adaptation showed significant positive correlation with self-esteem (r=0.39, p=0.00), self-efficacy (r=0.31, p=0.00), social support (r=0.47, p=0.00), self-productive coping (r=0.14, p=0.05), self-flexible coping (r=0.22, p=0.00), environment-active coping (r=0.21, p=0.00), and environment-flexible coping (r=0.14, p=0.04). The social adaptation showed significant negative correlation with anxiety (r=-0.16, p=0.02), and emotional problems (r=-0.18, p=-0.00). 3. The stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that the most powerful predictor of social adaptation was social support (21%). A combination of social support, depression, behavioral controllability, self-efficacy, and environmental coping behavior accounted for 39% of the variance in social adaptation in chronic mental illness. From the results of this study, it is suggested to develop and apply a social adaptation training program for chronic mental illness.

  • With the development of information technology, new technologies to be introduced in each industry are continuously increasing. This study aims to verify the influence of ambivalent emotions experienced when encountering new technologies, the coping strategies they induce, and their impact on the decision-making process of technology adoption Specifically, this research investigates the emotions and responses to new technologies in the situational context where service providers must deliver services based on new technology in environments where no such services have been developed previously. Furthermore, it seeks to verify the influence of coping responses on the intention to use services based on new technologies. To this end, this study investigated the ambivalent emotions and coping responses of financial sector workers to new financial services based on metaverse technology. As a result of the analysis ambivalance had a significant effect on all four coping responses (disengagement-oriented coping, denial, indecision and compromise). Among them, denial, which is an inflexible response, and compromise, which is a flexible response, had a significant positive effect on the intention to use, and disengagement-oriented coping and indecision had a significant negative effect on the intention to use. The results of this study confirm the user's metaverse acceptance factor and user-centered influence, and are expected to provide guidelines for the introduction of services to practical workers with academic significance.

  • This study was conducted to explore the coping strategy of Korean men in an international marriage. To achieve this purpose, we selected 4 Korean husbands who had married after seeking the services of matchmaking agencies, and we used snowball sampling. The data were collected through in-depth interviews, and analyzed according to the case study research method. It was found that the men considered international marriage to be their second choice instead of the best one. But they considered their marriage to be 'a prepared marriage', not 'a rash marriage.' 'The prepared marriage' allowed them to have realistic expectations, and to become 'tied in wedlock' with 'a good person.' The Korean husbands coped with difficulties and problems through flexible thinking, such as considering 'how the woman acts depends on the man', 'finding a model mentor couple', 'keeping an open mind to each other', 'reinforcing family ties', and 'developing their wife's independent capacity.' Based on the results, practical alternatives for Korean husbands were suggested. Lastly, the limitations of this study were mentioned.

  • After Fukushima Dai-ichi NPP accident, the need for implementation of diverse and flexible coping strategies (FLEX) became evident. However, to ensure the effectiveness of the safety strategy, it is essential to quantify the uncertainties associated with the station blackout (SBO) scenario as well as the operator actions. In this paper, a systems engineering approach for uncertainty analysis (UA) of a SBO scenario in advanced pressurized water reactor is performed. MARS-KS is used as a best estimate thermal-hydraulic code and is loosely-coupled with Dakota software which is employed to develop the uncertainty quantification framework. Furthermore, the systems engineering approach is adopted to identify the requirements, functions and physical architecture, and to develop the verification and validation plan. For the preliminary analysis, 13 uncertainty parameters are propagated through the model to evaluate the stability and convergence of the framework. The developed framework will ultimately be used to quantify the aleatory and epistemic uncertainties associated with an extended SBO accident scenario and assess the coping capability of APR1400 and the effectiveness of the implemented FLEX strategies.

  • Following the Fukushima accident, portable equipment employed as accident mitigating systems have been installed and operated to reduce core damage and large early release frequencies. In addition, the establishment of an accident management strategy has gained importance. This study investigated the current status of portable equipment including the international portable equipment FLEX (diverse and flexible coping strategies), and domestic portable equipment multi-barrier accident coping strategy (MACST). Research on optimal utilization of MACST remains insufficient. As a preliminary study for establishing an optimal strategy, sensitivity studies were conducted to facilitate the priority of use on portable equipment, number of portable equipment, and dependency of operator actions based on a multi-unit probabilistic safety assessment model. The results revealed the conditions that reduced the multi-unit and site conditional core damage probabilities, indicating the optimal strategy of MACST. The results of this study can be used as a reference for establishing an optimal strategy that utilizes domestic safety equipment in the future.

  • The existing bridge with deck joint has many problems during construction and maintenance. To overcome these difficulties, an integral bridge, which is defined as the practice of constructing bridges without deck joints, is proposed in this study. A test bridge with 3 spans of PC beam was selected to verify the function of the bridge and is under construction. Characteristics of integral bridge are followings: $\circled1$ Flexible H-piles under the abutment are installed to accommodate thermal movements of the superstructures of bridge. $\circled2$ PC beam of the superstructure and the abutment are integrated. $\circled3$ The existing approach and relief slabs are applied to minimize the stress transfer occurred from the bridge deck to the pavement. $\circled4$ A cyclic control joint is installed between approach and relief slabs to absorb the thermal movement. $\circled5$ It is used a dual direction bearing which is cheaper than single direction bearing and has a good workability as well. It is also installed a shear block on the top of pier coping to protect the lateral movement caused by temperature change and earthquake.

  • The present study examines how a cognitive attention affects Korean learners of English (L2) in perceiving the English stop voicing distinction (/d/-/t/). This study tested the effect of attentional distractor on primary and non-primary acoustic cues, focusing on the role of Voice Onset Time (VOT) and fundamental frequency (F0). Using the dual-task paradigm, 28 Korean adult learners of English participated in the stop identification task carried with (distractor) and without (no-distractor) arithmetic calculation. Results showed that when distracted, Korean learners' sensitivity to VOT decreased as priorly reported with native English speakers. Furthermore, as F0 is a primary cue for a L1 Korean stop laryngeal contrast, its role in L2 English voicing distinction was also affected by a distractor, without compensating for the reduced VOT sensitivity. These findings suggest that flexible use of multiple cues in L1 is not necessarily beneficial for L2 phonological processing when coping with a adverse listening condition.

  • Following the accident at Fukushima, the true impact of multi-unit accidents came to light. Accordingly, research related to multi-unit accident effect analysis, risk evaluation, and accident prevention/prevention technology has been conducted. Specific examples are mobile/fixed equipment such as multi-barrier accident coping strategy (MACST) and diverse and flexible coping strategies (FLEX), which have been introduced and installed in multi-units for preventing and mitigating multi-unit accidents. These strategies are useful for enhancing the safety of nuclear power plants (NPPs); however, a more efficient strategy is required in terms of the costs of physical and human resources. To effectively and efficiently mitigate an increase in multi-unit accidents, it is necessary to not only to utilize mobile/fixed equipment but to also use crosstie options with resources that already exist at NPPs. Therefore, we analyzed the current international and domestic status of crosstie systems technology and propose a method to evaluate feasibility alongside risk based on a multi-unit probabilistic safety assessment (PSA). To analyze the international and domestic status of crosstie systems technology, actual cases and related research were studied, and a list of potential crosstie safety resources was derived. Additionally, a case study was performed on crosstie cases of two systems within the assumed six units on-site under a multi-unit accident, and a multi-unit PSA-based risk evaluation method is proposed.
