Shafts having asymmetry or odd number of symmetry in the cross-section can not be simply manufactured by conventional incremental radial forging. In order to manufacture such shafts, the new concept of incremental forging with one punch and a flexible fixture is developed by suggesting a flexible fixture, instead of two opposed punches used in radial forging, so that the flexible fixture only supports the workpiece while the punch is moving during forming. A new flexible fixture is designed using the steel shots and vacuum technology. An equilateral triangular cross-section is selected as the sample shape to be manufactured by the proposed manufacturing method. The desired triangular cross-sectional shaft is manufactured with the errors of $3.0\%$.
Some of Spacecraft's structures are flexible so that a certain expected disturbance can easily excite a low frequency vibration on these structures, having very low natural damping. Such vibration will degrade the performance of the system, which should to be kept in a specific shape or attitude against the undesired vibration, In this paper, LQG/LTR controller is developed using an additional dynamic model to increase the performance of the frequency responses at low frequency area,
A flexible tool is developed for automatic finishing of curved surfaces without any complicated control technique on three-axes machining center. The tool is made of thermosetting polyurethane elastomer on the surface of which aluminum oxide abrasives are mounted. Performance and durability of the tool are examined by finishing ball-end milled surfaces of high-alloyed tool steel. It is demonstrated that the tool removes cusp successfully without changing overall surface shape in relatively short time.
Partial reinforcement of sheet metal parts with CFRP patch is a technology that can realize ultra-lightweight body parts while overcoming the high material cost of carbon fiber. Performing these patchworks with highly productive press equipment solves another issue of CFRP: high process costs. The A-pillar is the main body part and has an undercut shape for fastening with other parts such as roof panels and doors. Therefore, it is difficult to bond CFRP patches to the A-pillar with a general press forming tool. In this paper, a flexible system that applies uniform pressure to complex shapes using ceramic particles and silicone rubber is proposed. By benchmarking various A-pillars, a reference model with an undercut shape was designed, and the system was configured to realize a uniform pressure distribution in the model. The ceramic spherical particles failed to realize the uniform distribution of high pressure due to their high hardness and point contact characteristics, which caused damage to the CFRP patch. Compression equipment made of silicone rubber was able to achieve the required pressure level for curing the epoxy. Non-adhesion defects between the metal and the CFRP patch were confirmed in the area where the bending deformation occurred. This defect could be eliminated by optimizing the process conditions suitable for the newly developed flexible system.

In this paper, we consider a dynamic shape control problem with an example of controlling a flexible beam shape. Mathematical formulations are obtained by employing the Green's function approach. Necessary conditions for optimality are derived by considering the quadratic performance criteria. Numerical results for both of the dynamic and the static cases are obtained and compared.

This study proposes an innovative methodology for developing flexible printed circuit boards (FPCBs) capable of conforming to three-dimensional shapes, meeting the increasing demand for electronic circuits in diverse and complex product designs. By integrating a traditional flat plate-based fabrication process with a subsequent three-dimensional thermal deformation technique, we have successfully demonstrated an FPCB that maintains stable electrical characteristics despite significant shape deformations. Using a modified polyimide substrate along with Ag flake-based conductive ink, we identified optimized process variables that enable substrate thermal deformation at lower temperatures (~130℃) and enhance the stretchability of the conductive ink (ε ~30%). The application of this novel FPCB in a prototype 3D-shaped sensor device, incorporating photosensors and temperature sensors, illustrates its potential for creating multifunctional, shape-adaptable electronic devices. The sensor can detect external light sources and measure ambient temperature, demonstrating stable operation even after transitioning from a planar to a three-dimensional configuration. This research lays the foundation for next-generation FPCBs that can be seamlessly integrated into various products, ushering in a new era of electronic device design and functionality.

Three technical obstacles must be overcome to build a fruitful business in the nascent industry of flexible microelectronics: the self-heating effect of thin film transistors (TFTs), the thermal and mechanical durability of flexible devices, and the cost issue. The self-heating effect is controlled through TFT shape, TFT electrical performance, dimensional reduction and energy-efficient circuits. Plastic engineering is one of the keys to solving thermal and mechanical durability problems faced by flexible microelectronics devices. For the Suftla flexible microelectronics business to be viable, Suftla transfer yield must be sufficiently high to keep down device cost. Improving the transfer yield is not easy, but it is the same challenge already faced and cleared in the TFT liquid crystal display industry.
In the shape design of flexible structures, it is useful to predict the initial shape from the desirable large deformed shapes under some loading conditions. In this paper, we present a numerical procedure of an initial shape determination problem for hyperelastic materials which enables us to calculate an initial shape corresponding to the prescribed deformed shape and boundary condition. The present procedure is based on an Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) finite element method for hyperelasticity, in which arbitrary change of shapes in both the initial and deformed states can be treated by considering the variation of geometric mappings in the equilibrium equation. Then the determination problem of the initial shape can be formulated as a nonlinear problem to solve the unknown initial shape for the specified deformed shape that satisfies the equilibrium equation. The present approach can be implemented easily to the finite element method by employing the isoparametric hypothesis. Some basic numerical results are also given to characterize the present procedure.
The flexible joint with bellows and flange is made by welding bellows and flange in general. The welded parts cause a crack or demage in the flexible joint due to continuous vibration and fatigue limit. This paper is concerned with development of flexible joint with non-welded, free rotation of flange and non-packing to improve fatigue failure condition between bellows and flange. The support box and support plate that are components of press part are designed to compress fore-end of bellows only without demage of bellows. The production system of flexible joint is designed with piston attached on the compression side. The simulation is performed using Deform 3D software. As the result of simulation, the shape of compressed bellows was most proper in the compression power of $157kg{\cdot}f$ and any deformation has not occurred at a part besides fore-end. The result show that the production possibility of the designed flexible joint.
This paper represents the development of an array-type flexible tactile sensor using PVDF(polyvinylidene fluoride) film and flexible circuitry. The tactile sensor which has $8{\times}8$ taxels is made by using PVDF film and FPC(flexible printed circuit) technique. Experimental results on static and dynamic properties are obtained by applying arbitrary forces and frequencies generated by the shaker. In the static characteristics, the threshold and the linearity of the sensor are investigated. Also dynamic response of the sensor subjected to the variable frequencies is examined. The signals of a contact force to the tactile sensor are sensed and processed in the DSP system in which the signals are digitalized and filtered. Finally, the signals are integrated for taking the force profile. The processed signals of the outputs of the sensor are visualized on a personal computer, the shape and force distribution of the contacted object are obtained using two and three-dimensional image in real time. The reasonable performance for the detection of contact state is verified through the experiment.
