Although there are numerous studies that address the problem of optimal machine grouping and part family classification for cellular manufacturing, little research has been reported that studies the conditions where cellular manufacturing is appropriate. This paper, in order to evaluate and compare the job shop with the GT cellular shop, the performance of those shops were simulated by using SIMAN. We tested the effect of independent variables including changes of product demands, intercell flow level, group setup time, processing time variability, variety of material handling systems, and job properties (ratio of processing time and material handling time). And also performance measures (dependent variables), such as machine utilization, mean flow time, average waiting time, and throughput rate, are discussed. Job shop model and GT cellular shop written in SIMAN simulation language were used in this study. These systems have sixteen machines which are aggregated as five machine stations using the macro feature of SIMAN. The results of this research help to better understand the effect of production factors on the performance of cellular manufacturing systems and to identify some of the necessary conditions required to make these systems perform better than traditional job shops. Therefore, this research represents one more step towards the characterization of shops which may benefit from cellular manufacturing.
The purpose of this paper is to improve the operation performance of unit-load Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV's) used as a carrier and mobile workstation in a flow-shop type flexible manufacturing system. An algorithm is developed to determine the optimal job sequence which minimizes the vehicle idle time on the line and the production makespan by the use of the entering interval and travel time between workcenters. An entering times of AGV's and the minimum number of AGV's required are calculated by optimal job sequence. When the numbe rof AGV's is limited, enterling times of AGV's are adjusted to maximize the efficient use of vehicles. A numerical example is given to illustrate the application of the algorithm.
This paper describes an intelligent user interface to define simulation models from the process and resource models. It also explains an automatic program generator of discrete event simulation model for shop floor control in a flexible manufacturing system. Especially, the paper is focused on the design and development of methodology to automate simulation modeling from the system description. Describing a shop floor control system in simulation is not an easy task since it must resolve various decision problems such as deadlock resolution, part dispatching, resource conflict resolution, etc. The program generator should be capable of constructing a complete discrete simulation models for a multi-product and multi-stage flow shop containing the above mentioned problems.
We have described the optimal process route selection model for the PCB(printed circuit board) auto-insertion line. This PCB assembly line is known as a FFL(flexible flow line) which produces a range of products keeping the flow shop properties. Under FFL environments, we have emphasized the balancing of work-loads in order to maximize total productivity of PCB auto-insertion line. So we have developed a heuristic algorithm based on a work-order selection rule and min-max concept for the job route selection model.
In this research, an object-oriented Petri net model for representing a flexible process plan is proposed, which is hierarchically multi-faceted for supporting planning, scheduling, and shop floor control functions. The multi-faceted process plan model consists of the following: a) an object model which represents on object-oriented data model, b) a static model which represents a process flow model with process alternatives, and c) a dynamic model which represents a process activity model with resources alternatives, of a flexible process plan. Petri nets allow the static and the dynamic process plan models to be represented in a unified formalism with an ease of model transformation. The multi-faceted process plan model suggested in this paper, is illustrated with a prismatic port in comprehensive detail.
Many dispatching rules have been developed for the on-line control of product flow in a job shop. The introduction of a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) has added a new requirement to classical job shop control problem : the selection of machines by parts of different types. An FMS can keep a great deal of information on the status of the system, such as information on what is scheduled in the near future, with great accuracy. For example, the knowledge of the time when the next part will arrive at each machine can be neneficial for the routing. This paper tests the effects of the use of this knowledge for part routing on the parts flow time (sum of the time for waiting and service) under a simple routing procedure- a look-ahead routing procedure. A test under many operating conditions shows that the reduction of part flow time from the cases without using this information is between 1% and 11%, which justifies more study on this routing procedure at real production sites when machine capacity is a critical issue. The test results of this paper are also valid for other highly automated systems such as the semi-conductor fabrication plants for routing when the arrivals of parts in the near future are known.
This paper presents a job-shop type flexible manufacturing system(FMS) scheduling problem and examines the effects of scheduling rules on the performance of FMS. Several machine and AGV scheduling rules are tested against the mean flow-time criterion. In this paper, I compare the rules under various experimental conditions by using an FMS simulation model. One of the objectives of this study is to discuss how the simulation-based scheduling problem can be operated. The other is to measure sensitivity of the rules to changes at inter arrival time, queue capacity, breakdown rates for machines and AGV, and AGV speed. Therefore, the results of simulation experiments were considered on FMS design and operating stages. A comprehensive bibliograph? is also presented in the paper.
A completely separated functional FMS (Flexible Manufacturing Systems), or a partly separated functional FMS, should be constructed because a fully functional FMS, where each machine has all of the tools required for procesing various kinds of jobs, is superflous and wasteful in meeting the multiform and changeable demands of comsumers in a flexible manner. The effective methods are presented in this study for allocating the tools to each machine in a two-machine flow shop type FMS to meet the above demands and to maximize the utilization of the FMS. The methods for a completely separated functional FMS having no duplicated tools and a partly separated functional FMS having some duplicated tools are proposed in this paper. Some simulation results clarify that utilization of the FMS by this methods is as high as the fully functional FMS when the number of jobs is large.
This paper discusses the methodology for the operational performance of unit-load automated guided vehicles(AGVs) in a flow-shop-type flexible machining and assembly systems (FM/AS). Throughout the paper, AGVs are working as a carrier and mobile workstation. For a double-loop FM/AS, in which one loop is dedicated to machining and the other to assembly, three AGV operating strategies are proposed. Considering the entering interval and travel time of AGVs between workcenters, the strategies are developed to determine the best job sequence which minimizes the makespan and vehicle idle time. Entering times of AGVs and the required minimum number of AGVs are obtained on the basis of the best job sequence. When the number of AGVs are limited, entering times of AGVs are adjusted to maximize the utilization of AGVs.
We suggest and evaluate a dynamic scheduling rule of machines and material handling systems for on-line operation in job shop type Flexible Manufacturing System. Alternating status should be able to take operation scheduling procedures and without delay in dynamic industrial environments effectively. The interaction(SPT-NS, SPT-QSNS, SPT-NUJ, EDD-NS, EDD-QSNS, EDD-NUJ, CR-NS, CR-QSNS, CR-NUJ) between machine operation scheduling and AGV dispatching rule were also studied in this research. The performance evaluation which was obtained from DSS compares the performance of Flow time, and Empty to loaded travel ratio. It is Compared with the best rules & two system.
