Current information storage devices read/write data on the rotating disk. The axial vibration of a rotating disk should be suppressed for the successful operation of the device. Information storage devices widely used in these days adopt relatively thick disk which is stiff enough to suppress axial vibration under allowable limit. However, the thickness of the disk is going to be thinner and thinner as the small form factor of the devices is getting preferred by the consumer. In this study, a stabilizer system, which is composed with 8 air bearings, is proposed for suppressing the axial vibration of a $95{\mu}m$ thick PC disk in a non-contacting manner. The performance of the stabilizer system is simulated by numerical computation and then confirmed its results through a series of experiment. A thin and flexible disk has various vibration modes when it rotates in high speed. The stabilizer system generates positive as well as negative pressure due to the rotation of flexible disk so that the force due to the pressure distribution pushes and pulls rotating disk in a non-contacting manner. The balance between positive and negative pressure forces can be obtained by adjusting the area and the slope of the air bearing surface. The axial vibration of the flexible disk of 120mm diameter is suppressed successfully from over $1000{\mu}m$ to $30{\mu}m$ peak-to-peak value at the rotational speed of 5,000rpm.

A structural analysis was carried out for a 60 N.m class flexible disk coupling. Flexible disk couplings are used to transmit power between two shafts. When a flexible coupling is used, some amount of misalignments such as angle of deviation and end play can be allowed in assembling the shafts. However, the maximum allowable misalignment should be decided to guarantee the fatigue life. In this study, the effect of the angle of deviation and end play on the maximum stress was investigated. From the analysis results, it was shown that the angle of deviation has a greater effect on the maximum stress than the end play. Furthermore, the dimensions of the disk plate were optimized to realize a better design. From the optimization, the maximum stress could be reduced by up to 5.2%.

Inherent dynamic interaction between flexible disk and workpiece creates partially non-flat surface profile. A flat zone was defined using minimum depth of engagement. Several key parameters were defined to explain the characteristics of the zone. Process conditions including disk rotation speed, initial depth of cut and feed speed were varied to produce product profile database. Correlation between key factors was examined to find the characteristic dependencies. Trends of key parameters were displayed and explained. Higher flat zone ratio was observed for lower depth of cut and higher disk rotation speed. Ratio of minimum depth of cut against target depth of cut increased for higher feed speed and disk rotation speed but was insensitive to the depth of cut variation. The process transition was visualized by continuously displaying instantaneous orientation of the deflected disk and the location of key parameters were clearly marked for comparison.

This paper presents an efficient method for determining the forced response of a spinning flexible disk-spindle system supported by fluid dynamic bearings(FDBs) in a computer hard disk drive(HDD). The spinning flexible disk-spindle system is represented by the asymmetric finite element equations of motion originating from the asymmetric dynamic coefficients of the FDBs and the gyroscopic moment of a spinning disk-spindle system. The proposed method utilizes only the right eigenvectors of the eigenvalue problem to transform the large asymmetric finite element equations of motion into a small number of coupled equations, guaranteeing the accuracy of their numerical integration. The results are then back-substituted into the equations of motion to determine the forced response. The effectiveness of the proposed method was verified by comparing it with the responses from the classical methods of mode superposition with the general eigenvalue problems, and mode superposition with modal approximation. The proposed method was shown to be effective in determining the forced response represented by the asymmetric finite element equations of motion of a spinning flexible disk-spindle system supported by FDBs.

An analytical procedure on the base of the substructure synthesis and assumed modes method is developed to investigate the flexibility effect of bladed disk assembly on vibrational modes of flexible rotor system. In modeling the system, Coriolis forces, gyroscopic moments, and centrifugal stiffening effects are taken into account. The coupled vibrations between the shaft and bladed disk are then extensively investigated through the numerical simulation of simplified models, with varying the shaft rotational speed and the pretwist and stagger angles of the blade. It is found that the Coriolis and inertia forces and the inertia torque, which are induced by the one nodal diameter modes of the bladed disk and vary depending upon the stagger and pretwist angles, lead to the coupled motions of the shaft and the bladed disk.

Even though a flexible disk grinding process was often applied to enhance the product quality, it produced non-flat zone in the beginning and the exit (end) area. Since latter area is susceptible to poor product quality with burn mark, careful analysis is required to cope with such degradation. The flexible disk grinding exit stage was analyzed for workpiece length, wheel speed, depth of cut and feed. The exit stage qualities defined as exit stage ratio and exit stage angle or slope was characterized. A neural network application results reveled that exit stage characteristics was predicted more accurately without workpiece dimension with minimum error of 1.3%.

This paper reports the high sensitivity actuator for flexible disk. The air stabilized flexible optical disk has very small axial runout. Therefore, It is proper to develop an actuator which has high sensitivity in tracking direction rather than in focusing direction. In order to maximize driving force in radial direction, we present an efficient design of magnetic circuit with simple multi-polarized magnets and auxiliary magnets. Designed magnetic circuit has big force in tracking direction. And we shift 2$^{nd}$ resonance frequency of moving parts Into high frequency band, not causing increase of mass and discord between force and mass centers to secure high sensitivities and sufficient control bandwidth. Finally, experimental results show that designed actuator has superior sensitivity in tracking direction.

As the rotational speed and the track density are increased, the vibration of disk/spindle system becomes critical issue. In this work, we propose a simple inclined air bearing(20mm${\times}$20mm) system which is positioned very near to the rotating disk especially compact disc(CD) as a flexible disk, and we investigate suppressing effect about disk mode (0,0) both experimentally and numerically. We find dynamic stiffness and damping coefficients of bearing and apply to the disk vibration. The results show about 10 percent errors comparing to the experimental results. Also we investigate experimentally the reduction of disk vibration and power consumption with two different kinds of inclined bearing for normal disk drive system, which has tray and cover. We find inclined air bearing can decrease about 30 percents of the original disk vibration amplitude.
A flexible disk grinding process model was developed based on the dynamic relationship proposed by Kurfess and the influence of the major system parameters which potentially affect the grinding process was studied. Due to the process complexities, several new parameters were assumed to be kinematically dependent on the geometric layouts of the process. Different process stages had been defined depending on the kinematic relationships between the grinding disk and workpiece. A trend of depth of cut was simulated using the proposed model and compared with the empirically measured data in two dimensions. Due to a poor prediction capability of the first model, a modified model was proposed and a better performance has been proved to reveal a closer description of processed surface quality. Also a deflection length has been verified using a different analytical approach.

The working surface of a flexible grinding disk was characterized by means of an image processing, in which a picture of a disk surface was taken by the CCD camera and analyzed with the personal computer. As process conditions, depth of cut was changed to be 2 and 4 mm. From the captured image circles marked on the disk was regenerated using the edges detected with scale space filtering. In order to correlate the level of deformation to the distortion of the circles, intervals between each circle have been analyzed. Notable correlation has been observed between the intervals and the process conditions.
