  • The purpose of present paper is to prove an improvement on stability of plane journal bearing due to the leaf spring damper (LSD) experimentally. A flexible rotor system is designed and manufactured, in order to generate oil whip instability of journal bearing at relative lower rotating speed. Vibration amplitude and instability onset speeds are investigated for a conventional plane journal bearing and plane journal bearing with LSD. To investigate the damping effects of LSD on stability of bearing, experiments are also conducted on the leaf spring dampers with and without working oil. It is found that the leaf spring damper can considerably increase the instability onset speed of a plane Journal bearing.

  • This paper presents a finite element method to analyze the free vibration of a flexible HDD composed of the spinning disk-spindle system with fluid dynamic bearings(FDBs), the head-suspension-actuator with pivot bearings, and the base plate with complicated geometry. Experimental modal testing shows that the proposed method well predicts tue vibration characteristics of a HDD. This research also shows that even the vibration motion of the spinning disk corresponding to half-speed whirl and the pure disk mode are transferred to a head-suspension-actuator and base plate through the air bearing and the pivot bearing consecutively. The proposed method can be effectively extended to investigate the forced vibration of a HDD and to design a robust HDD against shock.

  • This paper deals with the control of a horizontally placed flexible rotor levitated by electromagnets in a multi-input/multi-output (MIMO) active magnetic bearing(AMB) system. AMB is a kind of novel high performance bearing which can suspend the rotor by magnetic force. Its contact-free manner between the rotor and stator results in it being able to operate under much higher speed than conventional rolling bearings with relatively low power losses, as well as being environmental-friendly technology for AMB system having no wear and no lubrication requirements. In this MIMO AMB system, the rotor is a complex mechanical system, it not only has rigid body characteristics such as translational and slope motion but also bends as a flexible body. Reduced order nominal model is computed by consideration of the first 3 mode shapes of rotor dynamics. Then, the $H_{\infty}$ control strategy is applied to get robust controller. Such robustness of the control system as the ability of disturbance rejection and modeling error is guaranteed by using $H_{\infty}$ control strategy. Simulation results show the validation of the designed control system and the modeling method to the rotor.

  • Studies pertaining to the seismic bearing capacity analysis of skirted footings using the pseudo-static approach for estimation of the earthquake force in association with finite element method have been presented in this paper. An attempt has been made to explain the behaviors of the skirted footings by means of failure patterns obtained for rigid and flexible skirts. The skirts enhance the seismic bearing to some extent with an increase in seismic loading, after which it decreases nonlinearly. The effectiveness of skirts increases initially to some extent with an increase in seismic loading, after which it decreases nonlinearly. Other parameters that inversely affect the effectiveness of skirts are the depth of footing and the internal friction angle of the soil. The detailed finite element analysis regarding the various failure patterns of skirted footings under seismic forces shows the failure mechanism changes from a general shear failure to local shear failure with an increase in seismic force. An opposite trend has been observed with the increase in the angle of internal friction of the soil. The obtained analysis results suggest that a rigid skirted footing behaves similar to a conventional strip footing under seismic and static loadings. The excessive deflection of flexible skirts under combined gravity and seismic loading renders them relatively ineffective than rigid skirts.

  • Reynolds equation, which describes behavior of fluid film in journal bearing, basically satisfies mass conservation. But, boundary conditions usually used with this equation, e.g. half Sommerfeld or Reynolds boundary conditions, cannot fulfill this natural law of conservation. In the case of connecting rod bearing, where applied load is dynamic and its magnitude is relatively large, such unrealistic boundary conditions have serious influence on calculation results, especially on lubricant flow rate or power dissipation which are important parameters in thermal analysis. Another important factor in the analysis of connecting rod bearing is elastic deformation of bearing support structure which is relatively flexible. In this paper, EHL analysis of connecting rod beating is performed using mass-conserving boundary condition. Elastic deformation of bearing support structure and application of mass-conserving boundary condition have significant effects on the performances of connecting rod bearing.

  • The dynamic behavior of rotor-bearing system has been investigated using finite element method. A procedure is presented for dynamic modeling of rotor-bearing system which consist of shaft elements, rigid disk, flexible bearing and support structures. A finite element model including the effects of rotary inertia, shear deformation, gyroscopic moments is developed. Linear stiffness and damping coefficient are calculated for 3 lobe sleeve bearing. The whirl frequency, mode shape, stability and unbalance response of rotor system included effect of bearing coefficient and support structures are calculated.

  • The hydrodynamic bearing is accepted in many rotating systems because it has a large load carrying capacity. But the anisotropic pressure distribution of the bearing can arise the unstable vibration phenomenon over a certain speed. The magnetic bearing is an active element so that the unstable phenomenon of the hydrodynamic bearing, which is induced by the anisotropic support pressure of the oil film, can be controlled if the control algorithm and the controller gains are chosen appropriately. In this study, we investigate the stabilization method of the hydrodynamic bearing system composing the hybrid bearing which is the single unit of hydrodynamic bearing and magnetic bearing. The load carrying conditions of the hybrid bearing is modelled by the sum of the stiffness and damping coefficients of the hydrodynamic and the magnetic bearings in each direction. The dynamics of the rotor is analyzed by the Finite Element Method and the stability limit is determined by the eigenvalues of the hybrid bearings and shaft system. The eigenvalue study of the system shows that the stability limit of the hybrid bearing is increased compared to that of the hydrodynamic bearing. A Small increment of the stiffness and damping coefficient of the hybrid bearings by the magnetic actuators can increase the stability limit of the system. In this paper we tried to show the design references of the hybrid bearings by using the nondimensional bearing parameters. The analysis results show the possibilities of the stability limit increment of the hydrodynamic bearing system by combining the magnetic bearing.

  • The selection of geogrid types for the use of reinforced rail roadbed is important in the design of railways. Also, the problem of the construction damage on the geogrid during construction is raised by the field engineers. Therefore, laboratory model tests were peformed to investigate the efficiency of the bearing capacity and construction damage. As a result, it was found that the bearing capacity of the rigid geogrid reinforced railroad ballast shows 1.54 times higher than that of the flexible geogrid reinforced case. In addition, there were no noticeable damage during construction.
