Flow channels with non-circular cross-sections are encountered in a wide variety of heat exchangers. Accurate friction factor and Colburn j factor data are essential for the design and viable applications of such heat exchangers. In this study, an analysis is con ducted on heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics for tube-bundle heat exchanger with various arrangements of tubes, of which their geometry could easily be modified from a circular one in a harsh environment. The parameters investigated are aspect ratio, pitch, and inclined angle of tubes. The results obtained are: (1) Aspect ratio has larger influence on the j and f factor than pitch; (2) As aspect ratio increases, both j and f factors decrease; (3) The high performance is achieved when the pitch and aspect ratio are in the range of 1.5${\~}$2.5 and 1.25${\~}$2.0, respectively; and (4) the inclined arrangements of tubes show unfavorable results for both heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics in spite of the positive possibility of condensate removals in a latent heat recovery system.
Understanding the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler fouling in diesel engine is important factor in the durability characteristic of a EGR system. We develope a test rig and PM feeder using carbon black to examine the effect of fouling on EGR cooler devices those were consisted of flat and shell & tube type. The EGR cooler fouling process is a complex interaction involving heat exchanger shape, boundary condition, constitutes, chemistry and operating mode. As the soot deposited to EGR cooler, these formed a thin deposit layer that was less heat exchange than the fresh status of tube enclosing the exhaust gas, resulting in lower heat exchange effectiveness in both type coolers. But these deposits caused different results in pressure drop, it is increased in flat type, but decreased in Shell & tube type of EGR cooler. A cause was estimated from a change of the flow structure and a decrease of contact area as the EGR cooler fouling.
This study was carried out solar heating system design for district heating and it's the performance analysis by experiment. This experimental system was installed in Bundang district heating area in the end of 2006. The flat plate and vacuum tube solar collector are combined in one system. So district heating water is heated first by flat plate solar collector and than by vacuum tube solar collector. This solar heating system has not a solar buffer tank and is operating with variable flow rate to obtain a setting temperature of $90{\sim}95^{\circ}C$. As a result, the daily solar thermal collection efficiency is about 30 to 40% for the plate type and 50 to 55% for the vacuum tube solar collector. It varied especially depend on the weather condition like as solar radiation and ambient temperature. This variable flow rate system can be also reduced much pumping power more than 50%.
From the viewpoint of the structural design, the principal problem of the heat exchanger is the potentiality of structural instabilities due to the fluid loading effect during operations. Excessive fluid loading may give rise to permanent deformation of tube and would enentually result in collapse of heat exchanger, which would cause an obstruction of the fluid flow in the narrow channels. In this study, a fluid-structural interaction model was developed to investigate analtically the vibration characteristics of thin rectangular tube used in the heat exchanger. The model consists of two flat plates separated by fluid. The effects of the fluid in the tube was stuided. For analyses, the natural frequency coefficients of the model were investigated for the plate aspect ratios, channel heights, and boundary conditions. As conclusions, the natural frequency coefficients of the tube is found to be affected largely by the fluid loading and the channel heights.
When the weight if a concrete member makes problems, or when the cost of the concrete is relatively high, it may be economical to use a hollow concrete member. But a hollow R.C column may have poor ductility because of the brittle failure at the inner face of the hollow R.C column. This brittle failure results from the absence of the confinement at the inner face of the hollow R.C column. To avoid this brittle failure an internally confined hollow R.C column by a steel tube was developed before. In this study, a hollow R.C column is internally confined by a corrugated steel tube instead of a general flat steel tube. And a column ductility is performed. Test results show that the energy ductility ratio of a internally confined hollow R.C column by a by a corrugated steel tube corresponds to $80\%$ of the energy ductility ratio of a general solid R.C column.

The Bourdon tube pressure gauge is the most widely used primary detector for pressure in various kinds of fields recently. However in many cases lots of difficulties are encountered in telemetering, measuring the continuously changing pressure and recording as time goes by, etc. In this paper a Bourdon tube of flat-oval section is considered. On the basis of Wolf's theory, the very sensitive places are selected on the tube and full bridge arrangement is used. Then all of the characteristics are examined in order to use the pressure transducer practically into which the pressure gauge is converted. From the results, the error in meter reading is about $\pm$3% F.S., on the other hand, when measured with strain gauge, the error is within $\pm$1% F.S.. Also external acceleration on Bourdon tube hardly affect practical use.
Plate impingement of the impulse wave discharged from the open end of a duct is numerically investigated using a CFD method. Harten-Yee Total Variation Diminishing method is used to solve the unsteady, compressible flow governing equations. The Mach number, the flat plate inclination and the distance between the duct exit and inclined flat plate are changed to investigate their effects on the impinging flow field. The impulse wave impingement on the inclined flat plate depends on Mach number $M_s$ and the plate inclination $\psi$. The pressure distributions on the inclined flat plate show that for a small r/D, the peak pressure at the center of an inclined flat plate decreases with an increase in the plate inclination $\psi$ in the range of $\psi$ from $45^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$ but for a large r/D, the peak pressure decreases with an increase in $\psi$ in the range of $\psi$ from $75^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$. It is also found that for all of r/D, the peak pressure at the center of an inclined flat plate has a maximum value in $\psi=90^{\circ}$.
The interaction of a travelling shock with the shear layer of a flat plate is studied computationally. The Euler and Navier-Stokes equations are solved numerically on quadrilateral unstructured adaptive grids. The flat plate is installed horizontally on the central axis of a shock tube. The shear layer is first created by two shock waves at different speeds splitted by a flat plate. A series of small vortices is developed as a consequence in the shear layer. The shock wave reflected at the end wall impinges the shear layer. The complicated shock dynamics in the evolution to the pseudo-steady state is represented with the morphological transformation of a planar shock into an oblique shock.
In this paper we study numerically the shock-vortex interaction in the shear layer generated by moving shock waves above and below a flat plate. The faster normal shock is diffracted at the tip of the flat plate, producing a starting vortex. The slower normal shock below the flat plate arrives soon later to run across the vortex and make interaction. The two shocks are merged together and reflected back at the closed end of the shock tube to impinge on the shear layer developing multiple vortexlets. The computational simulation based on Euler and Navier-Stokes equations shows good prediction.
