Experiments at the Japan Microgravity Center (JAMIC) have investigated the interaction between diffusion flames and solid surfaces Placed neat flames The fuel for the flames was $C_{2} H_{4}$ The surrounding oxygen concentration was 35$\%$ with surrounding air temperatures of $T_{a}$ : 300K. Especially, the effect of wall temperature on soot deposition from a diffusion flame Placed near the wall has been studied by utilizing microgravity environment, which can attain very stable flame along the wall. Cylindrical burner with fuel injection was adopted to obtain two dimensional soot distributions by laser extinction method. In the experiment two different wall temperatures. $T_{w}$=300, 800 K, were selected as test conditions The results showed that the soot distribution between flame and burner wall was strong1y affected by the wall temperature and soot deposition increases with decrease in wall temperature. The comparison among the values lot two different wall temperatures suggests that the change in thermophoretic effect is the most dominant factor to give the change in soot deposition characteristics.
This study has numerically modelled the combustion processes of the turbulent swirling premixed lifted flames in the low-swirl burner (LSB). In these turbulent swirling premixed flames, the four tangentially- injected air jets induce the turbulent swirling flow which plays the crucial role to stabilize the turbulent lifted flame. In the present approach, the turbulence-chemistry interaction is represented by the level-set based flame let model. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional computations are made for the various swirl numbers and nozzle length. In terms of the centerline velocity profiles and flame liftoff heights, numerical results are compared with experimental data The three-dimensional approach yields the much better conformity with agreements with measurements without any analytic assumptions on the inlet swirl profiles, compared to the two-dimensional approach. Numerical clearly results indicate that the present level-set based flamelet approach has realistically simulated the structure and stabilization mechanism of the turbulent swirling stoichiometric and lean-premixed lifted flames in the low-swirl burner.

Experimental investigations on the comparison of developments between transient jets and evolving jet diffusion flames have been made in initial injection period. To achieve this experiment, an ignition technique using a residual flame as the ignition source is devised. High speed Schlieren visualizations, and measurements including jet tip penetration velocities and jet widths of the primary vortex are employed to examine the developing processes for several flow conditions. It is seen that the developing behaviors in the presence of flame are greatly different from those in transient jet, and thus the flow characteristics in the transient part are also modified. The discernible differences are shown to consist of the delay of the rollup of the primary vortex, the faster spreading after the rollup due to exothermic expansion, and the survival of only a primary vortex. The growth of primary vortex in the transient jet is properly explained through an impulsively started laminar vortex prior to the interaction. It is also found that the jet tip penetration velocity varies with elapsed time and an increase in Res gives rise to a higher tip penetration velocity.

The use of electromagnetic energy and non-equilibrium plasma for enhancing ignition and combustion stability is receiving increased attention recently. The conventional technologies have adapted the electrical devices to make the electromagnetic field, which resulted in various safety issues such as high-maintenance, additional high-cost system, electric shock and explosion. Therefore, an electrodeless microwave technology has an advantage for economic and reliability compared with conventional one because of no oxidation. However, the application of microwave has been still limited because of lack of interaction mechanism between flame and microwave. In this study, an experiment was performed with jet diffusion flames induced by microwaves to clarify the effect of microwave on the combustion stability and pollutant emissions. The results show that microwave induced flames enhanced the flame stability and blowout limit because of abundance of radical pool. However, NOx emission was increased monotonically with microwave intensity except 0.2 kW, and soot emission was reduced at the post flame region.
Since Fukushima nuclear power plant (NPP) accident in 2011, the importance of research on various severe accident phenomena has been emphasized. Particularly, detailed analysis of combustion risk is necessary following the containment damage caused by combustion in the Fukushima accident. Many studies have been conducted to evaluate the risk of local hydrogen concentration increases and flame propagation using computational code. In particular, the potential for combustion by local hydrogen concentration in specific areas within the containment has been emphasized. In this study, the process of flame propagation generated inside a reactor core to containment during a loss of coolant accident (LOCA) was analyzed using MELCOR 2.1 code. Later in the LOCA scenario, it was expected that hydrogen combustion occurred inside the reactor core owing to oxygen inflow through the cold leg break area. The main driving force of the oxygen intrusion is the elevated containment pressure due to the molten corium-concrete interaction. The thermal and mechanical loads caused by the flame threaten the integrity of the containment. Additionally, the containment spray system effectiveness in this situation was evaluated because changes in pressure gradient and concentrations of flammable gases greatly affect the overall behavior of ignition and subsequent containment integrity.

In order to find the effect of flame interaction on NO production, dual laminar diffusion flames issuing from two rectangular nozzles were investigated theoretically. Chemical equilibrium model and Zeldovich mechanism were used in numerical model. The effect of four major parameters on NO production were inspected. These parameters are nozzle spacing, Raynolds number, aspect ratio of nozle cross section and velocity of secondary flow. It is found that interaction of flames enhances production of n. It is also found that multiflames with large spacing, small aspect ratio and strong secondary flow product less n.

This paper presents a numerical investigation of deflagration to detonation transition (DDT) induced by shock wave and flame interaction in ethylene-air mixtures. Also shows the change of DDT triggering time by wall cooling effect. A model is consisted of the compressible reactive Navier-Stokes equations. And the effect of viscosity, thermal conduction, molecular diffusion, chemical reaction and wall effect are included. Using this model, the generation of hot spot by repeated shock and flame interaction, occurrence of detonation, and wall cooling effect of detonation confining boundaries are studied.

This study was conducted to investigate the flow and combustion characteristic of the experimental burner which was manufactured for the reflection of the oven and broil burner features. As slot shape, spacing between slots, and slot arrangement of the exit area which emits the mixing gas are different in case of oven burners and broil turners, the purpose of this study is to know the affection of the flame interaction and combustion characteristic according to the change of shape factors such as slot shape, slot arrangement, and slot-to-slot spacing. With no relation of the slot shape, as the spacing between slots became narrow, the occurrence of a lift-flame was delayed. So the combustion was possible in the leaner region, but the appearance of yellow-tip became a little fast. Slit slot port had the broadest operating range among the other slot shapes. Specially, from the side of lift-flame, as the jet that spreads downstream in the longitudinal slot was nearly circular just a few slot lengths away from the orifice, slot-to-slot spacing of the Slit port was closer than the other ports. These results could be expected through the computer numerical method and had a good agreement. As the spacing between slots increased, in case of Slit and Mix port, NOx emission rate was constant or decreased, but the NOx emission of Hole port was increased. CO emission rate of Slit and Hole port was increased as the slot-to-slot spacing was broadened.

In order to realize a stably propagating flame in a narrow channel, flame instabilities resulting from flame-wall interaction should be avoided. In particular flame quenching is a significant issue in micro combustion devices; quenching is caused either by excessive heat loss or by active radical adsorptions at the wall. In this paper, the relative significance of thermal and chemical effects on flame quenching is examined by means of quenching distance measurement. Emphasis is placed on the effects of surface defect density on flame quenching. To investigate chemical quenching phenomenon, thermally grown silicon oxide plates with well-defined defect distribution were prepared. ion implantation technique was used to control defect density, i.e. the number of oxygen vacancies. It has been found that when the surface temperature is under $300^{\circ}C$, the quenching distance is decreased on account of reduced heat loss; as the surface temperature is increased over $300^{\circ}C$, however, quenching distance is increased despite reduced heat loss effect. Such abberant behavior is caused by heterogeneous surface reactions between active radicals and surface defects. The higher defect density, the larger quenching distance. This result means that chemical quenching is governed by radical adsorption that can be parameterized by oxygen vacancy density on the surface.
