The soot and OH radical distributions have been experimentally studied in ethylene and propane laminar diffusion flames. The integrated soot volume fraction was measured along the centerline of a flame using a laser light extinction method. Planar laser light scattering and PLIF techniques are employed for the soot and OH radical distribution measurements utilizing Nd:YAG laser and OPO, FDO system. The concentration of OH radical is rapidly decreased at the edge of sooting region, which implies the importance of OH radical species on the soot oxidation process. For ethylene flames, the addition of air in fuel moves the OH radical distribution towards the center line of a flame at the soot oxidation region, while the concentration of OH radical remains relatively high at the soot formation region. The interaction between soot particles and OH radicals becomes more active with fuel-air at the soot oxidation region. For propane flames, however, any indication of the increased interaction between soot particles and OH radicals with fuel-air was not noticed.

Co-flow laminar diffusion flames' temperature has been studied experimentally for ethylene$(C_2H_4)$ using a co-flow burner in order to investigate the characteristics of diffusion flame's temperature distribution. The temperature distributions in the flame were measured by rapid insertion of a R-type thermocouple. The measurement area was divided into three zones. 1st area was expect to created PAH zone, Il nd area was expect to form soot zone, which is known to generate most soot volume fraction, and III rd area was expect to from soot oxidization zone. Also The temperature along the flame y-axis as a fuel quantity was measured. As a results, we have measured temperature neglecting the effect of soot particles attached to the thermocouple junction, which is close to the nozzle and upstream zone has a unstable flow in co-flow diffusion flame and acquires that the flame y-axis temperature has a uniform temperature in the generated soot volume fraction zone(II nd).
In this study to find out the amount of soot, LII method, which utilizes a laser, was used in laminar diffusion flame and based upon the temperature and soot measured from the turbulent Diesel diffusion flame in the constant-volume chamber using the two-color method. Through these experiments, we could know that the LII signal is generally proportional to the soot amount in a laminar diffusion flame. And we could acquire the temperature and soot using the two-color method in a turbulent Diesel diffusion flame effectively. In addition to, this experiment revealed that the KL factor was high on parts of the chamber where the temperature dropped. On the other hand, the KL factor was low where the temperature increased rapidly. Also, it was possible to measure the highest temperature of a turbulent Diesel diffusion flame is approximately 2300K.
The effect of non-thermal plasma on diffusion flames in co-flow jets has been studied experimentally by adopting a dielectric barrier discharge technique. The generation of streamers was enhanced with a flame due to increased reduced electric fields by high temperature burnt gas and the abundance of ions in the flame region. The effect of streamers on flame behavior reveals that the flame length was significantly decreased as the applied voltage increased and the yellow luminosity by the radiation of soot particles was also significantly reduced. The formation of PAH and soot was influenced appreciably by the non-thermal plasma, while the flame temperature and the concentration of major species were not influence much with the plasma generation. The results demonstrated that the application of non-thermal plasma can be a viable technique in controlling soot generation in flames with low power consumption in the order of 1 W.
The two-equation soot model based on the transient laminar flamelet model is implemented for soot formation of laminar non-premixed $CH_4/Air$ flame with detailed chemical reaction mechanism and complex thermodynamic properties. The soot model represents nucleation, growth and oxidation with gas-phase chemistry. This represented unsteady flamelet soot model has been tested and compared using well verified reference calculation result obtained solving the Full Transport Equations method.

Boilers and diesel engines have many problems because their exhaust particles, i.e., soot have lots of bad influence on environment. And it's spray and flame have fundamentally axial symmetric shape. To investigate the relationship between fuel concentration distribution of spray and soot concentration distribution as well as temperature distribution of flame, we made a axial symmetric two phase spray-flame and analyzed the structure of is. The measuring method is the principle of the light extinction method for the spray-flame and onion peeling model is applied to analyze the radial distribution of fuel and soot concentration. The temperature of flame is measured by ø 0.4mm Pt-Pt.RH 3% thermocouple. The oils for the experiments are diesel oil and 10% water emulsified diesel oil. It was found that the soot concentration becomes higher as it comes near to the center of flame, and the fuel concentration does, too. And the soot concentration level of diesel oil is generally higher than that of the 10% water emulsified fuel. The maximum flame temperature of diesel oil is 1,17$0^{\circ}C$, however, 10% water emulsified diesel oil is 1,27$0^{\circ}C$.

Experimental measurements of laser-induced ion mobility(LIIM) were performed for ethene/air premixed flames operated near the soot inception point. Soot was ionized using a pulsed laser operated at 532 nm. The ionization signal was collected with a tungsten electrode located in the post-flame region. ionization signals were collected using both a single electrode and dual electrode configuration. Prior LIIM studies have focused on the use of a single biased electrode to generate the electric field, with the burner head serving as the path to ground. In many practical combustion systems, a path to ground is not readily available. To apply the LIIM diagnostic to these geometries, a dual electrode geometry must be employed. The influence of electrode configuration, flame equivalence ratio, and flame height on ionization signal detection was determined. The efficacy of the LIIM diagnostic to detect soot inception in the post-flame region of a premixed flame using a dual electrode configuration was investigated. For the different dual electrode configurations tested, the dual parallel electrode geometry was observed to be most sensitive to detect the soot inception point in a premixed flame.

Experiments at the Japan Microgravity Center (JAMIC) have investigated the interaction between diffusion flames and solid surfaces Placed neat flames The fuel for the flames was $C_{2} H_{4}$ The surrounding oxygen concentration was 35$\%$ with surrounding air temperatures of $T_{a}$ : 300K. Especially, the effect of wall temperature on soot deposition from a diffusion flame Placed near the wall has been studied by utilizing microgravity environment, which can attain very stable flame along the wall. Cylindrical burner with fuel injection was adopted to obtain two dimensional soot distributions by laser extinction method. In the experiment two different wall temperatures. $T_{w}$=300, 800 K, were selected as test conditions The results showed that the soot distribution between flame and burner wall was strong1y affected by the wall temperature and soot deposition increases with decrease in wall temperature. The comparison among the values lot two different wall temperatures suggests that the change in thermophoretic effect is the most dominant factor to give the change in soot deposition characteristics.
The influence of N2 addition on soot formation, flame temperature and NOx emissions is investigated experimentally with methane fuel co-flow diffusion flames. The motivation of the present investigation is the differences in NOx reduction reported between fuel-side and oxidizer-side introduction of N2. To determine the influence of dilution alone, fuel was diluted with nitrogen while keeping the adiabatic flame temperature fixed by changing the temperature of the reactants. And to see the thermal effect only, air was supplied at different temperature without N2 addition. N2 addition into fuel side suppressed the soot formation than the case of oxidizer-side, while flame temperature enhanced the soot formation almost linearly. These results reveals the relative influences of the thermal, concentration effects of N2 additives on soot formation In accordance with experimental study, numerical simulation using CHEMKIN code was carried out to compare the temperature results with those acquired by CARS measurement, and we could find that there is good agreement between those results. Emission test revealed that NOx emissions were affected by not only flame temperature but also N2 addition.
