  • OH radical concentration have been measured in a methane-air partially premixed flames using PLIF. Excitation lines were selected $Q_{1}(6)$ branch, (1,0) band. The system is consisted of Nd:YAG laser, dye laser and frequency doubler to make pump beam for OH radical. On the direct photographs, flame height increases as fuel flow rate and equivalence ratio increase. And on the PLIF images, OH radical is distributed from premixed flame front to nonpremixed flame front through the flame structure with all equivalence ratio. OH overall concentrations increase with equivalence ratio. At the stoichiometric equivalence ratio, the peak of OH radical concentration exists strongly near the inner cone. As equivalence ratio is changed to richer, OH radical distribution goes thinly and the peak is increased as longitudinal direction. As the flow goes to the downstream, OH radical concentration decreases and broadens, because OH radical reacts with another species after OH formation at the initial oxidization. This phenomenon resembles radial distribution. At the l00cc fuel flowrate, the radial peak of OH radical exists from x/R=l.0 to 1.5.

  • A simplified method that models the deflagration process occurring in closed or vented vessels is described. When combustion occurs within the spherical or cylindrical vessels, the flame moves spherically or segmentally to the vessel periphery. The volume and area of each element along the propagating flame front are calculated by using simple geometrical rules. For instabilities and turbulence resulting in enhanced burning rates, a simple analysis results in reasonable agreement with the experimental pressure transients when two burning rates (a laminar burning rate prior to the onset of instability and an enhanced burning rate) were used. Pressure reduction caused by a vent opening at predetermined pressure was modeled. Parameters examined in the modeling include ignition location, mixture concentration, vented area, and vent opening pressure. It was found that venting was effective in reducing the peak pressure experienced in vessels. The model can be expected to estimate reasonable peak pressures and flame front distances by modeling the enhanced burning rates, that is, turbulent enhancement factor.

  • Instantaneous, three-dimensional scalar dissipation rates of the reaction progress variable are measured in turbulent premixed Bunsen flames of lean hydrocarbon/air mixtures with the two-sheet, two-dimensional Rayleigh scattering technique. The flames investigated are located in the turbulent flame-front regime on a newly proposed combustion diagram for premixed flames. The conditionally-averaged mean scalar dissipation rates, $N_{\zeta}$ are found to be lower than the calculated laminar values, indicating a locally broadened flame front. In agreement with previous measurements, the maximum of $N_{\zeta}$, decreases strongly with increasing Karlovitz numbers. The conditional probability density functions are close to a log-normal distribution for scalar dissipation rates conditioned at the progress variable value where the scalar dissipation is maximum in unstretched laminar flame calculations. The time scale for the Favre-averaged mean scalar dissipation rate decreases in general across the turbulent flame brush from the unburnt to burnt side.

  • When a circular cylinder is placed at the center of a slot burner nozzle, once stable Woflhard-Parker type laminar lean premixed flame is changed to an oscillating flame with self-induced noise. The wrinkled flame surface showed the same pattern and frequency of the Karman vortex street at the downstream of a circular cylinder. The interaction of flame with Karman vortex street is observed to be responsible for flame oscillation. The measured flame oscillation frequency is very similar to the estimated Karman vortex shedding frequency based on the St-Re relationship of the flow past circular cylinder, which could be considered as a strong evidence for the interaction between laminar pre-mixed flame and a Karman vortex street. As Reynolds number increases oscillation frequency decreases and the self-induced noise level increases as well as the flame front is more severly wrinkled. This result suggests that the flame/vortex interaction becomes more active at higher Re.

  • The objectives of the study are to investigate the effect of swirl on the flame propagation and to propose a flame propagation model that predicts the behavior of the flame front in the presence of significant swirl flow field by analyzing flame images pictured with a high speed digital video at idle. The velocity distribution of the charge in the cylinder was measured using an LDV measurement system. From the experimental results and analyses, a new flame propagation model is proposed in which flame frontal locations can be traced by superposing the convective flow field and the uniform expansion speed of the burned gas, and the proposed model reveals that the increase of the flame propagation speed on the presence of swirl motion within 1 ms after ignition is mainly due to the flame stretch, and mainly due to increased turbulence intensity later than 1 ms after ignition.

  • The unsteady heat release characteristics play a significant role in combustion instabilities observed in low emissions gas turbine combustors. Such combustion instabilities are often caused by coupling mechanisms between unsteady heat release rates and acoustic perturbations. A generalized model of the turbulent flame response to acoustic perturbations is analytically formulated by considering a distributed heat release along a curved mean flame front and using the flame's kinematic model that incorporates the turbulent flame development. The effects of the development of flame speed on the flame transfer functions are examined by calculating the transfer functions with a constant or developing flame speed. The flame transfer function due to velocity fluctuation shows that, when a developing flame speed is used, the transfer function magnitude decreases faster with Strouhal number than the results with a constant flame speed at low Strouhal numbers. The flame transfer function due to mixture ratio fluctuation, however, exhibits the opposite results: the transfer function magnitude with a developing flame speed increases faster than that with a constant flame speed at low Strouhal numbers. Oscillatory behaviors of both transfer function magnitudes are shown to be damped when a developing flame speed is used. Both transfer functions also show similar behaviors in the phase characteristics: The phases of both transfer functions with a developing flame speed increase more rapidly than those with a constant flame speed.

  • The present study is focused on the subgrid scale combustion model in context with a Large Eddy Simulation. In order to deal with detailed chemical kinetic, the level-set method based on a flamelet model is addressed. In this model, the flame front is treated as an interface, represented by an iso-surface of a scalar field G. This iso-surface is convected by the velocity field and its filtered quantities are include the turbulent burning velocity, which is to be modelled. For modelling the turbulent burning velocity, an equation for the length-scale of the sub-filter flame front fluctuations was developed. The formulations and issues for the turbulent premixed and partially premixed flames are addressed in detail.

  • There are three active radicals which become to the scale of flame diagnostics at the flame front. They are OH, CH and $C_2$ radical. For this, optical measurement system which could monitor simultaneously the luminous waves of three radicals, was constructed. These were analyzed statistically into the cross correlation, coherence and phase. Through such an statistical treatment, combustion characteristics was investigated at the primary zone of gas turbine combustor. The local equivalence ratio was predicted with the ratio of luminuous intensity between CH and $C_2$ radical. This result was matched up to the equivalence ratio calculated from gas composition within 5% error. In general, equivalence ratio was said to be 1.0 at flame front, but it could be increased up to about 1.2 depending on the degree of swirl intensity in case of changing properly the air amount of primary zone.

  • Volatile organic compounds are air pollutants exhausting from industrial process, evaporation of solvent, and so on. Most of VOCs are the combustible gas of low calorific value as it is diluted by air. The systems burning such a hazardous gas need to increase enthalpy in order to increase flame stability. In this study an incinerator with reciprocating flow in the honeycomb ceramic has been used for the experiment of VOCs control. By the reciprocating flow system, the enthalpy of combustion gas is effectively regenerated into the enthalpy increases of the combustible gas through the honeycomb ceramic, which provides a heat storage. The position of the reaction zone is strongly dependent on the parameters of mixture velocity and time frequency. Flame front is changed to the point where burning velocity is coincided with burning velocity in the honeycomb ceramic. In this system it is important that flame front should be located symmetrically at the center of honeycomb ceramic for the purpose of increasing the reaction rate at one point. Peak temperature becomes higher with decreasing time frequency, at which the flow direction is regularly reversed.
