  • The maximum quantization error has serious effect on the performance of fixed-width multipliers that receive W-bit inputs and produce W-bit products. In this paper, we analyze the error bound of fixed-width modified Booth multipliers. Then, the estimation method for the number of additional columns for fixed-width multipliers is proposed to limit the maximum quantization error within a desired bound. In addition, it is shown that our methodology can be extended to reduced-width multipliers. By simulations, it is shown that the proposed error analysis method is useful to the practical design of fixed-width modified Booth multipliers.

  • In viol family string instruments vibration of string is transmitted to the front plate through bridge to cause resonance of the instrument body. Therefore, the vibration of string is the source of sound and the properties, the structure, and the boundary conditions of string are expected to have significant effect on the sound. In this study the vibration of strings in cello when one end is fixed and the other end is pressed with finger tip is studied and compared with the case of the fixed-fixed ends. The result of analysis and experiment shows that the vibration of the string that is fixed at one end and pressed with finger tip at the other end is significantly influenced by the contact condition of the string with the finger tip and also quite different from that of the fixed-fixed string, It also suggests that the sound of a cello can be significantly influenced by the contact condition between the string and the finger tip in the fingered string.

  • In this study, the main factors affecting the number of passengers and cargo volume transported by air between Korea, China and Japan over the past 20 years are to be identified. For the analysis, data from three countries' GDP and per capita as well as exchange rates and international oil prices were used, and OLS multiple regression analysis and fixed effect analysis were performed. As a result of the analysis, both the number of passengers and cargo volume transported by air showed a negative (-) direction for GDP, which represents the country's economic power, and a positive (+) direction, for per capita GDP, which represents income level. And the increase in the exchange rate between China and Japan acted in a positive (+) direction on the increase in the number of passengers, and the effect of oil prices was found to be limited.

  • Statement of problem. Translucency and masking effect of provisional crown and fixed partial denture materials is an important esthetic consideration. But, provisional resin materials differ substantially in their ability to mask underlying colors. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the translucency differences of provisional resin materials at various thicknesses and the correlation between the translucency and the masking efficiency. Material and methods. Two polymethyl methacrylate resins (Jet Tooth Shade, Alike) and three resin composites (Protemp 3 Garant, Luxatemp and Revotek LC) were used. Specimens (n=6) were fabricated from each material in 0.3, 0.5, 0.8, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 3.0 mm thickness. The CIELAB parameters of each specimens were measured using a spectrophotometer. The translucency parameter (TP) values and the masking effect $({\Delta}ME^*{_{ab}})$ values were computed and all data were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA and the multiple comparisons Scheffe test. The correlation between the thickness and the TP values and the correlation between the thickness and the ${\Delta}ME^*{_{ab}}$ values were also evaluated by correlation analysis and regression analysis. Results. The TP values and the ${\Delta}ME^*{_{ab}}$ values were significantly related to the thickness in all specimens. The TP values were more sensitive to the change of thickness than the ${\Delta}ME^*{_{ab}}$ values. The order of the translucency by brand was different from the order of the masking effect by brand in all thickness groups. Conclusion. Within the limitations of this study, the translucency and masking effect of the provisional resin materials investigated were significantly related to their thickness. The masking effect of provisional resin was correlated with the translucency parameter, but the order of the masking effect by brand was different from the order of the translucency parameter.

  • Recently, it has been increased disaster of crops and agricultural facilities with climate change such as regional storm, typhoon. However agricultural facilities have unsafe design criteria of improving drainage corresponding to this change. This study has analyzed the impact that inundation area and magnitude of drainage-facility is decided based on fixed- and unfixed-duration precipitation by applying revised design criteria of drainage for climate change. The result was shown that 1-day and 2-days rainfall for 20-years return period has increased about 11.4%, 4.4% respectively by changing fixed- to unfixed duration. And the increase rate of design flood was 15.0%. The result was also shown that Inundation area was enlarged by 6.6% as well as increased inundation duration under same basic condition in designed rainfall between fixed- and unfixed-duration. According to the analysis, it is necessary for pump capacity in unfixed-duration to be increased by 70% for same effect with fixed-duration. Therefore, when computing method of probability precipitation is changed from fixed one to unfixed-duration by applying revised design criteria, there seems to be improving effect in drainage design. Because 1440-minutes rainfall for 20-years return period with unfixed-duration is more effective than 1-day rainfall for 30-years return period with fixed-duration. By applying unfixed-duration rainfall, capacity of drainage facilities need to be expanded to achieve the same effects (Inundation depth & duration) with fixed-duration rainfall. Further study is required for considering each condition of climate, topography and drainage by applying revised design criteria.

  • A multi-dimensional freeze drying analysis program, which took simultaneous heat and mass transfer, sublimation of ice and motion of sublimation front into full account, was developed using finite volume method with fixed grid. The effect due to the motion of sublimation interface was modeled by an enthalpy formulation streamlined for the freeze drying problems. The efficiency and accuracy of the program was validated by solving one- and two-dimensional freeze drying problems frequently encountered in industrial processes. Finally, the freeze drying processes of cylinder and slab objects with permeable side surfaces were simulated, which demonstrated the capability of the present analysis program in solving multi-dimensional freeze drying problems with complex sublimation interface configurations.

  • In this study, the governing equations of motion for multi-cracked nonuniform nanobeam based on nonlocal elasticity theory and embedded in an elastic medium were derived. DTM(differential transformation method) was applied to vibration analysis of multi-cracked nonuniform nanobeam based on nonlocal elasticity theory and embedded in an elastic medium. The non-dimensional natural frequencies of this nanobeam were obtained for eoe, crack stiffness and elastic medium stiffness with various boundary conditions. The results obtained by this method was compared with previous works and showed the close agreement between two methods. The important conclusions obtained by this study are as follows : 1. As the length of nanobeam is shorter, the effect of scale coefficient is greater. 2. The locations of crack change non-dimensional natural frequency, In the case of fixed-fixed ends, the non-dimensional natural frequency is the biggest in the first crack location of 0.6L of nanobeam length, and the smallest in both ends. In the case of fixed-free ends, the closer the location of first crack go tho the free end, the bigger the non-dimensional natural frequency. 3. As the stiffness of crack is greater, the non-dimensional natural frequency is smaller, And the effect of crack stiffness is similar on both fixed-free ends and fixed-fixed ends. 4. The bigger the stiffness of elastic medium, the greater the non - dimensional natural frequency.

  • This paper analyzes the effect of the STATCOM on the improvement of the Fault Ride Through (FRT) capability of the fixed speed wind turbines(FSWTs). The steady-state models of the wind farm components, such as induction generator, capacitor bank, and the STATCOM, are developed based on the simplified equivalent circuit. Especially, the STATCOM is modeled as a controllable current source and a method that analytically determines the magnitude of the injection current is developed. For the quasi-steady-state(QSS) analysis, the steady-state model of the generator and STATCOM are merged with the dynamic model of drive train. The QSS simulation with the STATCOM shows that the STATCOM can enhance the FRT performance by improving the $W_r-T_e$ characteristics of the FSWTs.

  • This study has found the socio-economic factors that affect occupational accidents and measured the influence quantitatively. We built the panel data of 4 countries (Japan, Germany, the U.S., and the U.K.) and the analysis model counted on the fixed effect model to reflect the countries' differences. The fatal occupational injury rates in the analyzed countries had a statistically significant relationship with the level of per capita GDP, the proportion of the construction industry, the rate of male workers, annual average working hours, the rate of workers in manufacturing and construction industries, etc. The annual average working hours have a positive correlation with the fatal occupational injury rate. To reduce occupational accidents effectively, we should be monitoring and researching various factors that can affect the occurrence of occupational accidents such as worker characteristics, changing industrial structure, and changes in working hours.

  • The present study was performed to investigate the effect of aging on muscular activity of older subjects under the condition of fixed load muscle contraction. SEMG signals were recorded from old (46 women) and young (45 women) groups performing sustained isometric elbow flexion contraction with a fixed load during 30 seconds. Linear regression and mean square error (MSE) analysis with four characteristic variables (ARV, RMS, MDF, MNF) were used to compare the age-related difference (of local muscle fatigue and fluctuation of the amplitude and frequency) in the SEMG signal. The main results can be summarized as follows: During sustained muscle contraction with a fixed load: i) the MSE values of amplitude (ARV, RMS) and frequency (MDF, MNF) variables were more than 30% higher for the young than for the old adults; ii) the measures of local muscle fatigue (slope of the MDF and MNF) indicated greater fatigue in the old; and iii) the rate of increase of the SEMG amplitude was higher for the young than the old.
