  • The diet composition of Tanaka's snailfish, Liparis tanakae were collected by bottom trawl net in the Yellow Sea of Korea during 2022 (April, August, October, and November). The size of the specimens ranged from 3.8 to 52.2 cm in total length. L. tanakae were primary consumed caridea shrimps (Crangon hakodatei, Eualus spathulirostris, etc.) and specialist feeder mainly consumed caridea shirmps (C. hakodatei). The L. tanakae's trophic level is 3.63. Caridea shrimps were the primary prey items for all size groups (<20 cm, 20~30 cm, 30~40 cm, ≥40 cm). The proportion of E. spathulirostris has increased as the body size of L. tanakae increased, whereas the proportion of C. hakodatei decreased gradually. As the body size of L. tanakae increased the mean weight of prey per stomach (mW/ST) tended to increase significantly (One-way ANOVA, P<0.05). The caridea shrimps were the primary prey items throught all seasons. In summer, the main prey items were the C. hakodatei, however, in autumn, the proportion of C. hakodatei decreased while the proportion of E. spathulirostris increased.

  • The organic materials included in excreta of livestock are important resources for organic manure and for improving soil quality, although there is still far from effective using. One reason for this is still unclearly standard of quality for evaluation of manure made from excreta of livestock. Therefore, the objective of this study is to develop rapid and accurate analytical method for analyzing organic compositions of manure made from excreta of livestock, and to establish quality evaluation method based on the compositions predicted by near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS). Sixteen samples of manure, each eight samples prepared from two treatments, were used in this study. The manure samples were prepared by mixing 560 kg feces of swine,60 kg sawdust with moisture content was adjusted to be 65%. The mixture was then keep under two kinds of shelter, black and clear sheets, as a treatment on the effect of sunlight. Samples were taken in every week (form week-0 to 7) during the process of manure making. Samples were analyzed to determine neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and acid detergent lignin (ADL) by detergent methods, and organic cell wall (OCW) and fibrous content of low digestibility in OCW (Ob) by enzymatic methods. Biological oxygen demand (BOD) was analyzed by coulometric respirometer method. These compositions were carbohydrateds and lignin that were hardly digested. Spectra of samples were scanned by NIR instrument model 6500 (Pacific Scientific) and read over the range of wavelength between 400 and 2500nm. Calibration equations were developed using eight manure samples collected from black sheet shelter, while prediction was conducted to the other eight samples from clear sheet shelter. Accuracy of NTRS prediction was evaluated by correlation coefficients (r), standard error of prediction (SEP) and ration of standard deviation of reference data in prediction sample set to SEP (RPD). The r, SEP and RPD value of forage were 0.99, 0.69 and 7.6 for ADL, 0.96, 1.03 and 4.1 for NDF, 0.98, 0.60 and 4.9 for ADF, 0.92, 1.24 and 2.6 for Ob, and 0.91, 1.02 and 7.3 for BOD, respectively. The results indicated that NIRS could be used to measure the organic composition of forage used in manure samples.

  • Growth and survival (%) of the larvae and spats of Scapharca broughtonii fed on three different microalgal species (Isochrysis galbana, Pavlova lutheri and Chaetoceros simplex) were investigated with the analysis of fatty acid composition. The larvae fed on mixed diet with three microalgal species showed the highest growth in shell length ($261.3{\pm}13.5{\mu}m$) and survival ($27.4{\pm}5.3%$). The growth and survival (%) of the larvae fed on the single diet with C. simplex were significantly higher than those of the larvae fed on I. galbana or P. lutheri (P < 0.05). The growth and survival (%) of S. broughtonii spats reared for 30 days were also highest in the mixed diet group with $1,114.8{\pm}128.0{\mu}m$ and $61.3{\pm}5.5%$, respectively, and followed by C. simplex, I. galbana and P. lutheri. With respect to composition of fatty acid of the single or mixed microalgal diet, the content of PUFA and n-3 HUFA were the highest in C. simplex. This result can be considered as the reason for high growth and survival (%) of the larvae and the spats. C. simplex was the best species as the single diet, but the mixed diet with three microalgal species showed better dietary value than single diet did for the larvae and spat of S. broughtonii.

  • The diet composition of skinnycheek lanternfish, Benthosema pterotum were collected by bottom trawl net in the South Sea of Korea during 2021 (February, May, August, and November) and 2022 (February, April, August, and November). The size of the specimens ranged from 16 to 73 mm in total length. B. pterotum were mesopelagic carnivores that mainly consumed euphausiids and copepods. Its diets included small quantities of amphipods, shrimps, mysids, etc. We calculated the trophic level as 3.16 for B. pterotum. The individuals of small size class (<40 mm) fed mainly on copepods. In the next size classes (40~45 mm, 45~50 mm, 50~55 mm), copepods' proportion decreased and euphausiids increased. In the largest class (55~60 mm and ≥60 mm), the proportion of euphausiids' decreased, and shrimps increased. As the body size of B. pterotum increased the mean weight of prey per stomach (mW/ST) tended to significantly increase (One-way ANOVA, P<0.05).

  • Fishery resources have been widely consumed as protein- and vitamin-rich food sources in the Korean diet. However, information regarding their vitamin levels is extremely limited. In this study, trienzyme-Lactobacillus casei method was validated and used to determine the folate contents in fishery foods. The trienzyme-L. casei method for folate analysis showed excellent accuracy (85.2 to 95.3% recovery) and precision (repeatability 1.4% RSD and reproducibility 2.4% RSD). Folate contents of 20 fish foods (4 fish, 3 crustaceans, 3 sea algae, 3 cephalopods, 4 shellfish, and 3 others) ranged from 1.75 to 97.98 ㎍/100 g. Furthermore, we found that the folate content in seaweed fusiforme was the highest, followed by gulfweed (69.73 ㎍/100 g). Folate analysis using the trienzyme-L. casei method was determined excellent based on the z-score of -0.3 in the Food Analysis Performance Assessment Scheme test. Analytical and method validation data generated in this study could be used to update the national food composition table on vitamin B9 in Korean fishery resources.

  • In order to develop the squid(Todarodes pacificus) sik-hae, the changes of TBA, fatty acids, free amino acids, and the number of microflora fermented at different fermentation temperatures and periods were determined. In addition, pretense from squid sik-hae was partially purified. The number of TBA was the highest after 5-day storage and decreased after that, and lipid oxidation was the highest at $10^{\circ}C$. The amounts of linoleic aid(18:2) and oleic acid (18:1) were about $60\%$ of fatty acid composition of squid sik-hae, and linolenic acid(18:3) and EPA(20:5) significantly decomposed with increasing fermentation periods and temperatures. Pro, His, Aeg, Leu, and Glu were composed mainly of amino acid and the composition ratios of Ser, His, and Arg decreased with increasing fermentation periods whereas, those of Glu, Ala, Val, and Tyr increased. The composition ratios of Glu, Val, and Met increased with increasing fermentation temperatures whereas, those of Ala, Cys, Thr, and Gly decreased. The number of microflora generally increased up to 15-days of storage and decreased after that. The rates of increass and decreass of the microbial number increased in proportion to fermentation temperatures. In addition, the bacteria producing proteases were identified as Bacillus spp. Proteases from $60{\sim}80\%$ ammonium sulfate concentration showed the highest activity and had about 15 binds with molecular weights between 20,000 and 40,000 Dalton by the SDS-PAGE.

  • A study on the spawning and fecundity of anchovy, Engraulis japonica, in the southern waters of Korea was carried out on the basis of data collected from gonad examination during March-september, 1991. Spawning period showed that length class in the range of 9-12cm fork length occurred during May-July, whereas adults above 12cm from March to September. In comparison with the oocyte compositions of the ovary of anchovy adult caught at sunrise and sunset, together with variation of the gonad weight and sex ratio of the fish sampled during time between 14:00 and 21:00, considering that the oocyte more than 600um in diameter existed much in the samples from sunset compared with that from sunrise, as well as a decreasing trend in the gonad weight and proportion of female of anchovy taken around sunset, spawning was estimated to occur mainly after sunset. The proportion of the adult with a pronounced peak above 600um in oocyte composition was estimated to be about $20\%$ of the spawning population. Fecundity was estimated to the range of about 23,000-315,000 with batch fecundity of 1,857-8,223 and specific batch fecundity of $438\pm146$.

  • Investigations were made on catch composition, sex ratio, relationships between carapace length, body weight and fecundity and spawning season of major target shrimps (Acetes chinensis, A. japonicus) in the shrimp fishing areas of south-western coastal waters, accounting for about $45\%$ of annual shrimp landings in Korea. Catches were collected monthly in the fishing areas from March 2000 to February 2001, using single pocket-walled fishing gear, Total 59 species (shrimps 14, fishes 34, other crustaceans 8 and cephalopods 3 species) occurred. During the study period the bycatch-to-shrimp ratio of shrimp fishery was 2.42 in April 2000 and less than 1 for all months except for August 2000 and Febuary 2001. Compared with shrimp fishery of other areas and nations, these results indicate that effect of the fishing gear on catches of other species is minor, suggesting higher gear selectivity for shrimps. Of shrimps, there were two dominant species (A. chinensis, A. japonirus). Average sex ratio was 1.44 $\pm$ 0.42 for A. japonicus and 1,44 $\pm$ 0.43 for A. chinensis, which are dominant females in August. Average fecundity was 4,812 $\pm$ 1,511 for A. japonicus and 5,561 $\pm$ 1,900 for A. chinensis. In the two species mature females were found in the period from May to August. Similarly, the gonadosomatic index (GSI) was higher in July and August, with a peak in July, These results indicate that their main spawning season was summer.

  • Benthic environments and composition of macrobenthic fauna around the marine fish culture cages were studied to clarify the effect of fish farming near Tongyong from August, 1995 to february, 1996. Sediment grain size and bottom dissolved oxygen under the fish cages were similar to that of a control site, but organic content was higher under the cages. Fewer species were found under the fish cages than under the control site, but conspicuously higher density was obtained under cages. Capitella capitals, Nebalia bipes were dominant infauna, and Asterina pertinifera and Astelias amurensis were dominant epifauna under the fish cage whereas Lumbrineris longifolia and Anphioplus sp. dominated in the control site. Diversity index showed seasonal variation under the fish cages, but showed little variation at the control site. The benthic fauna under the fish cages showed different community structures from the control site. As results, the fish culture cages affected the benthic environment and the community structure of benthic fauna by input of the organic content and biological effects such as dead shells.

  • We monitored the current macrozoobenthic community structure after the Sea Prince oil spill around Keumo-do and Sori-do, Korea. Macrobenthic animals were collected seasonally around Sori-Keumo do using a van Veen grab ($0.1m^2$) from October 1999 to April 2000. In total, 196 species were identified at 46 sites around Keumho-do. The mean density was 1,460 individuals/$m^2$, and polychaetes comprised 80% of the total density of the macrozoobenthic. Dominant species were the polychaete Tharyx sp. (51%), the echinoderm Amphioplus megapomus (5%) and the polychaete Lumbrineris longifolia (3%). We identified 176 macrobenthic species at 36 sites around Sori-do. The mean density was 1,068 individuals/$m^2$, and polychaetes was the most abundant faunal group, comprising 41%, followed by mollusks (24%) and echinoderms (20%). Dominant species in Sori-do were the mollusk Potamocorbula amurensis (23%), the chinoderm Amphioplus megapomus (14%), and the polychaete Tharyx sp. (10%). The overall community structures in the study area showed few seasonal changes, although there was a gradual change in the species composition within each benthic community. Tharyx sp. was the most abundant species in the study area. Because this species has not been found in the other coastal areas except during recent investigations, it is considered to have increased during the course of community succession after the oil spill. The macrozoobenthic around Keumo-do showed little change in species richness, whereas around Sori-do, it showed a few increases in species richness after the summer of 1998. The overall density showed the same trend as species richness. Based on improved community indices, we suggest that the macrozoobenthic communities around Sori-Keumo Islands are gradually recovering from the oil-spill damagecaused by the oil spill.
