  • Fish resource surveys were conducted near Jeju Island in June, August and October 2021 using an underwater camera monitoring system, fish pots, and SCUBA diving methods. The efficiency of the methods used to survey fish resources was compared using the number of individuals compared to area per unit time (inds/m3/h) and the number of species compared to area per unit time (spp./m3/h). As a result of comparing the number of individuals compared to the area per unit time (inds/m3/h), the order was underwater camera 214.69, SCUBA diving 124.62, and fish pots 0.57 inds/m3/h. The number of species compared to area per unit time (spp./m3/h) is in the following order: SCUBA diving 0.85, underwater camera 0.38, and fish pots 0.01 spp./m3/h. The fish resource monitoring method using underwater cameras was found to be more efficient in individual counts, and the SCUBA diving method was found to be more efficient in species counts. When considering cost and survey efficiency, the fish resource survey method using underwater cameras was judged to be more effective. The results of this study are expected to be widely used in estimating the population density of fish, which is the core of future fisheries resource surveys.

  • The seasonal and interannual variation in the species composition and abundance of the fish assemblage were studied. Fish samples were collected seasonally over 4 year (2005 to 2008) using pots in the southern coast of East Sea. During the study period, a total of 32 fish species belonging to 24 families were collected. The dominant species were Conger myriaster, Paracentropogon rubripinnis, Liparis tanakae, Parapercis sexfasciata, Eptatretus burgeri and Clupea pallasii pallasii, which accounted for 91.9% of the total number of individuals collected. The number of species, number of individuals, biomass, and diversity fluctuated with season. The peak number of species and number of individuals occurred were in August 2008, whereas the biomass was the highest in August 2005 and diversity was in May 2008. The abundance of dominant species also showed some seasonal and interannual changes. A one-way analysis of similarity (ANOSIM) showed that the fish assemblage in 2008 was significantly different from those of 2005, 2006 and 2007, whereas there was no significant difference among seasons over 4 years.

  • The basic experiments on the plastic sea eel pots used in fishing were carried out in order to investigate the elasticity of the funnel ribs, hydrodynamic resistance, sinking time and diffusion of the bait from June to October, 1987. The elasticity of the bamboo funnel ribs was higher than that of the polypropylene ribs up to the load 150g. The hydrodynamic resistance R (kg) of the pots towing to the head direction horizontally in relation to towing velocity V (m/sec) was expressed as following formula; R=0.36V super(2.01) and coefficient of drag C sub(D) was 0.52. The sinking times of the covered pots by tape fully or partially were late 1-2 second than the typical pots within the water depth 7.5m. The diffusion tendency through the covered pots using dye and sardine extracts solution was concentrated to the entrance more than the typical pots. However, fishing efficiency as number and weight of fish per pots for nine times fishing operation was revealed no difference between the covered pots and the typical pots.

  • The basic investigation of the sea eel pots fisheries by questionnarie observation and dimension of the pots by fishing operation were carried out in order to develop for mechanical hauling system with 20~50 gross tonnage fishing boats from June to December, 1988. Number and weight of fish per pot between smaller diameter 11cm and larger 13cm of the pot have no significance so that the drag of the smaller pots can be decreased about 20% than the larger pots. The operating time by two men from opening to closing with screwing lock entrance was slightly faster than that by three men with knotting entrance even though the losses with two kinds of entrances while fishing operation were about the same. It was very reasonable that stone and lead sinker on the main line were substitute for two or three lead core P.P rope to make it smooth surface of the main line for mechanization of the continuous fishing operation.

  • The monthly collected fish samples by crab pots were analyzed in order to study the species composition and seasonal variation of fish assemblage in the coastal water off Gadeok-do, Korea in 1998, During the study period, 49 species of fishes representing 26 families were collected, The dominant species were Conger myriaster, Sebastes inermis, Hexagrammos otakii, H. agrammus, Stephanolepis cirrhifer and Acanthogobius flavimanus. These 6 dominant species accounted for $67.1\%$ and $69.4\%$ in the number of individuals and biomass, respectively. The secondary importance species were Thamnaconus modestus, Takifugu niphobles, Rudarius ercodes, Dictyosoma burgeri, Sebastes longispinis and Epinephelus septemfasciatus. The highest number of species was collected in November, and the number of individuals and biomass were highest in March. But the lowest numbers of species and individuals were collected in July and the lowest biomass in September, Although the species diversity indices varied little monthly, the lowest value was recorded in August because of small number of species and predominance of 5. cirrhifer and T. modestus.

  • In this study, the fishery status of the octopus pot fishery in the east coastal sea were investigated, and the fishing performance of each pot shape was compared and analyzed. The fishery status survey was conducted through listening surveys at Jukbyeon Port, Uljin Port and Pohang Daebo Port in Gyeongbuk Province, and the amount of fishing gear used, fishing method, size and loss of octopus pot fishery was investigated. On the east coastal sea, octopus is one of the commercially important fish stocks and is caught in inshore pots, inshore combos, inshore gillnets and offshore pots. Among these fishing methods, pot fishing yields the highest catch. The shape of the pot differs depending on the region. In Uljin (Jukbyeon Port and Hupo Port), Gyeongbuk, rectangular type net pots are mainly used, and in Pohang (Daebo Port) in Gyeongbuk, drum-type pots are mostly used. Enteroctopus dofleini accounts for more than 90% of the catch of octopus. For the octopus fishing performance test by trap type, three types of traps (rectangular pot, drum pot and cylinder pot) were used on the coastal sea of Pohang Daebo. As a result, the total catch by pot shape was shown in the order of rectangular-type pot > drum-type pot > cylinder-type pot. The catch of octopus, the target species, was in the following order: rectangular-type pot > drum-type pot > cylinder-type pot. Such result shows a significant difference (Mann-Whitney test, p<0.05).

  • Species composition and bimonthly changes of fish community were investigated with the fishes collected by using both trammel nets and fish pots in the coastal waters of Sagyeoi, Jeju Island from May 2009 to February 2010. A total of 1,921 individuals (324,206 g in biomass), which comprise 10 orders and 35 families with 60 species, were collected during the study period. Among 60 species, 52 species were caught by trammel nets, 20 species by fish pots, and 12 species by both fishing gears. The five dominant species were Pseudolabrus sieboldi, Plotosus lineatus, Pteragogus flagellifer, Sebastiscus marmorattus and Diodon holocanthus in the aspect of total number of individuals, and Diodon holocanthus, Sebastiscus marmorattus, Stephanolepis cirrhifer, Pseudolabrus sieboldi, Parupeneus chrysopleuron in biomass. Each characteristics of fish community such as the number of species, the total number of individuals, and biomass were highly correlated with water temperature and salinity, which were all statistically significant at the 5% significant level. In other words, there was a tendency of increment of each characteristics according to a raise in water temperature or a decrease of salinity, and vise versa. The number of species, the total number of individuals, and biomass of fishes were highest in August and lowest in February.

  • The aim of this study is to explores the possibility of applying new aquaponics using guppies, a tropical fish breeding as companion fish at home, different from the aquaponics system using fish species such as loach, carp, and catfish for commercial purposes. To facilitate the application of Aquaponics at home, a system was established by connecting a water tank, water plants, hydroponic pots, plant growth LEDs, and Arduino sensors using Internet of Things(IoT) technology. As a hydroponic crops, lettuce that can be easily obtained and consumed at home was selected. In order to confirm the applicability of aquaponics using tropical fish, the growth rates of hydroponic crops in the same environment were compared as a control. The growth rate of aquaponics crops using tropical fish was about 77.4% of that of hydroponic crops. This will produce the same effect as hydroponic cultivation if conditions correspond with enough fish quantity to feed plant and appropriate pH control for growth are met. It can be seen that, and in the future, it can be used to develop an Aquaphonics standard system applicable at home.
