  • Alginates are used to encapsulate various materials, including food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. This study examined the properties and oxidation stability of fish oil capsules manufactured with calcium alginate gels. The fish oil capsules were manufactured by dropping sodium alginate solution and fish oil into a calcium chloride solution through nozzles. The membrane thickness, sphericity, rupture strength and deformation depth of the fish oil capsules were determined. The peroxide value of the fish oil was assayed to determine the oxidation stability of the capsules. The capsules measured approximately 3 mm with a membrane thickness of 90 μm independent of the amount of fish oil added. As the amount of fish oil encapsulated increased, the sphericity, rupture strength and deformation depth of the capsules decreased. The encapsulation efficiency increased until the amount of fish oil was 30%. The oxidation stability of fish oil in capsules was dependent on the type of nozzle, e.g., the oxidation stability of fish oil in capsules made using a double nozzle was greater than with a single nozzle. These results should lead to industrial application of fish oils including eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids, as nutraceuticals.

  • We investigate the changes of fatty acids in blood for an evaluation of the effects of soft and enteric coated capsules containing omega 3 fatty acids. Fish oil, which contained 62.87 g/100 g of sum of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), was used as nutracueticals for omega 3 fatty acids. Lipid releasing amount in soft capsule was 70% in stomach condition. However, there was 10% of releasing amount of lipid observed in enteric coated capsule in stomach condition. In intestinal condition, 50% of lipid releasing amount in enteric coated capsule showed until 6 hr, but soft capsule until 90 min. EPA and DHA contents in soft capsule administration showed higher level than those in enteric coated capsule until 8 hr. However, the administration of enteric coated capsule showed higher level of EPA and DHA in blood after 8 hr. After 24 hr, mono-, poly-unsaturated and saturated fatty acids contents with enteric coated capsule showed higher level than those with soft capsule. The enteric coated capsule containing omega 3 fatty acids was expected to sustain omega 3 fatty acids.

  • The development of fish feed is essential to aquaculture. Recently, yeast, dhlorella and plankton have been studied and development as the feed of the fry fishes, But, these biological feeds cause the nutritional unbalance to fry fishes, rotifer or artemia. Therefore, to solve these problems, microcapsules with micron sizes were prepared for enhancing the nutritional values of artemia and rotifer which are used as the feed of fry fishes. Microparticle oil capsules were prepared by the complex coacervation technique. The method to make the optimal size of microcapsule which the artemia and rotifer can be easily taken was wvaluated. The size of oil microcapsule in the range of 5-70$\mu$m was obtained by the agitation conditions during coacervation. Capsule size and size distribution were dependent on the agitation speed and agitation time, respectively.

  • Kareius bicoloratus (Basilewsky) is one of the commonly found right-eye flounders and widely distributed in the coastal waters of Korea and Japan. On December 11,1980, the ailthors carried out an experiment to obtain a large number of fertilized eggs from wild adult fish caught by a trawler. The fish were obtained from Maisaka fish market, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. The egg is pelagic, spherical in shape and measuring 1.014-1.04 mm in diameter. The yolk as well as the egg capsule is colorless and transparent, and contain no oil globules. The hatching took place in 73 hr 45 min after fertilization at the water temperature $8.0-9.5^{\circ}C$. Newly hatched larvae are 3.09-3.146 mm in total length, with the anus situated in the middle of the body. The marginal fin does not have Pigment cells and myotome number is 17+20=37. Within one day after hatching, the larvae attained 3.77 mm in total length, and there appeared three or four melanophore on yolk sac. When the larvae attained 3.96 mm in total length, melanophores began to appear on the eye ball. Two days after hatching, the larvae attained 4.05 mm in total length, most of yolk material was absorbed, and the caudal fin began to grow at the terminal part of the notochord. When the larvae attained 4.21 mm in total length, mouth and eyes began to move. After 3 days, the larvae attained 4.342-4.394 mm in total length, alimentary canal differentiated, melanophores appeared on the lower jaw and posterior part of the fin membrane. When the larvae attaind 4.576 mm in total length, marginal line of dorsal fin membrane became concave.
