This study introduces the development of robot fish ROFI 1.1. Today, robot fish is one of strong candidates for next-generation UUV. The present paper describes the design, manufacturing, and operation tests of the robot fish developed at Seoul National University. The very first robot fish in Korea, ROFI 1.1 is operated by a wireless remote controller. Its overall length is 680mm, and weight is 8.8kg. The fore body contains main mechanical and electrical systems and is covered by a FRP skin. The aft body has a mechanical bone system that mimics fish bones, and its skin is made of flexible silicon sponge to allow elastic motion for propulsion. It is found that this mechanical system creates effective and realistic fish-like swimming mode. It is observed that the normal and maximum advancing speeds of ROFI 1.1 are about 1 and 2 m/sec, and the turning radius is between $0.7{\sim}2.5m$, depending on the turning mechanism.
The purpose of this study is to observe the early life history of Korean Lefua costata and use the result as basic taxonomic research data for balitorid fish. The fertilized eggs were light green color with completely circle shape and mean size was 1.21±0.06 mm (n=30). Immediately after hatching, the size of the larvae was 2.81±0.11 mm (n=5) in mean length, with egg yolk. On the 3rd day after hatching, the preflexion larvae had a mean length of 4.64±0.09 mm (n=5), and their mouth was opened to start feeding. On the 8th day after hatching, a mean length of the postflexion larvae was 9.43±0.46 mm (n=5), the distal part of the notochord was bent to 45°, and 16 fin rays were developed on the caudal fin. On the 31st day after hatching, a mean length of juveniles was 22.3±0.85 mm (n=5), and the number of fin rays was the same as that of adult fish with (iv8) dorsal fins and (iii8) anal fins.
There prevailed lymphocystis disease with 1 to 2cm in size in the skin and pins of cultured Sebastes schlegeli in fish farms in Tongyoung-gun, Sanyang-myeon, Kon-ri from summer, 1987 to fall, 1988. Though there were some difference between each fish farm, this disease prevailed widely from immature fish to mature fish, less than 10cm to 30cm in body length with about 8 through 80% of infection rate. Sebastes schlegeli with the lymphocystis disease showed combined nipple-shaped mass by doubly, triply propagated lymphocystis. But the author considered that lymphocystis disease was not a direct cause of death of Sebastes schlegeli, the fish showed marked inflammation by seconary infection of pathogenic organisms.

Although ex situ target strength (TS) measurements using dual- and split-beam systems have become the primary approach of estimating fish abundance, theoretical model estimation is a powerful tool for verifying the measurements, as well as for providing values when making direct measurements is difficult. TS values for 20 samples of live bambooleaf wrasse (Pseudolabrus japonicus) whose target length (TL) ranged between 13.7 and 21.3 cm were estimated theoretically using the Kirchhoff-ray mode model, and the TS values for 18 live fish samples were additionally measured at ${\sim}0^{\circ}$ tilt angle to the swimming aspect using a tethered method at a frequency of 120 kHz to verify the theoretical values. The digitizing intervals used to extract the fish body and swim bladder morphology in the X-ray photographs significantly affected the calculated TS patterns, but variations based on the speed of sound and density ratio values for the general range of fish flesh were relatively small (within 1 dB). Close agreement was observed between the measured and theoretical TS values, and the correlation between the average TS and body length of the fish could be calculated accurately as <$TS_{120kHz}$>= 20logTL (cm) -71.6 using the theoretical method.
A survey on the incidence of metacercariae infection of Clonorchis sinensis in the fresh water fish, Pseudorasbora parva which is well known as the second intermediate host for this fluke was carried out in the upper stream of Phoung-tack stream, Kyungki province during the period of October to November 1997. Forty fish in P. parva were collected by netting, or using the bait in transparent bowls from the two different districts located in Osung-myun, Phoungtack-gun and transported to the laboratory. The body length and weight were measured. They were from 5.0 to 7.6 cm in length and 1.0 to 5.0 g in weight. A total of 40 P. parva were divided 3 groups by the size (70-79, 60-69 and 50-59 mm) and were digested by artificial digestion with pepsin-Hcl solution in a 36$\circ$C incubator and then examined the infection density of metacercariae of the fresh water fish under a binocular dissecting microscope. The incidence of metacercariae infection in P. parva was 406 of 40 examined and the metacercariae detection rate showed 77.5%. The average number of metacercariae detected in P. parva was 10.2. The results of the survey indicate that Clonorchis sinensis infection may occur by consuming raw fresh water fish caught from the upper stream of Phoungtackho, Kyungki province.
The research was carried out to know the occurrence trend of scuticociliatosis and mortality of fingerlings in flounder. The diseased fish were collected from on-land rearing farms lind hatcheries of flounder in Jeju Island from January 1991 to December 2001. Occurrence of scuticociliatosis was about 10% of total occurred diseases from 1991 to 1996, but increased to 34.5% in 2001. Although monthly occurrence of scuticociliatosis was not related to season from 1999 to 2001, the highest occurrence was revealed in July and August. Mixed infections of bacteria including Vibrio sp. Edwardsiella tarda, Streptococcus sp., and Flexibacter sp. with scuticociliates were observed. Among the bacteria, Vibrio sp. was the highest frequency(40.1%), and the lowest one(10.1%) was Streptococcus sp., Mortality of fingerlings by scuticociliates was different sharply according to size of fish. Mortality of infected fingerlings below 7 cm of total length was 53.8%, while that of normal fingerling above 7 cm of total length was 13.2%. When fish were grown above 25 cm, mass mortality by scuticociliates infection was decreased markedly.

We compared the structure of fish community and condition of major fish species in Lake Chungpyung and Lake Paldang, which are relatively shallow, meso-eutrophic, cascading dam reservoirs on the North Han River. Two lakes have wide littoral zone in the lakeside providing similarly good habitat for fishes, whereas fishery and water recreational activities such as motorboating, water skiing are allowed in Lake Chungpyung but are prohibited in Lake Paldang. The average lengths of large size fishes in Lake Chungpyung are shorter than those of same species in Lake Paldang, resulting in the slight distortion of generation distribution of those species in Lake Chungpyung, possibly owing to the active fishery such as fixed shore net fishing, gill net fishing and angling. Meanwhile the condition of fishes represented by the length-weight relationship of fish species did not show the significant differences between two lakes and showed normal condition. To evaluate the impact of physical disturbance such as loud noise and turbulent wave from water recreational activities to fishes precisely, further studies including physiological responses to stress an spawing activity should be needed.
Oreochromis niloticus is the most ecologically and economically important fish in tropical and sub-tropical aquatic systems. Recently, due to sever anthropogenic stressors, hydrological variations and infestations of invasive alien species in Ethiopian water bodies, fish community structure and ecosystem of Lake Tana is changing alarmingly. So far, there is paucity of information on the morphometric relations and diet composition of O. niloticus in Lake Tana, gulf of Gorgora. A total of 309 fish samples were collected and their total length (TL), standard length (SL) and total weight (TW) were measured to determine morphometric relations; and gut contents were examined to identify most important food item in the diet of the fish. Results indicated that, the relation between TL and SL was significant (p < 0.001) and linear (SL = 0.942TL-2.41) while the relation between TL and TW was curvilinear (TW = 0.014 TL2.8) indicating allometric growth. Among the total guts scrutinized, 53 (17.3%) of them were empty and the remaining 256 (82.7%) were non-empty. Phytoplankton constituted the largest bulk and occurred in 77% of the guts examined and volumetrically accounted 44.3%. Detritus and zooplankton had an intermediate importance by occurring 60.2% and 63.3% of all guts scrutinized and constituted about 25.6% and 15.5% of the total volume respectively. Contributions of macrophytes, insects, nematodes and unidentified food items were relatively low in their importance. Ontogenetic dietary shift was observed in the diet indicating an omnivorous feeding habit of the adult fish.
Dual frequency identification sonar (DIDSON) is an imaging sonar that has been used for numerous fisheries investigations in a diverse range of freshwater and marine environments. The main purpose of DIDSON is fish counting, fish sizing, and fish behavioral studies. DIDSON records video-quality data, so processing power for handling the vast amount of data with high speed is a priority. Therefore, a semiautomated analysis of DIDSON data for fish counting, sizing, and fish behavior in Echoview (fisheries acoustic data analysis software) was accomplished using testing data collected on the Rakaia River, New Zealand. Using this data, the methods and algorithms for background noise subtraction, image smoothing, target (fish) detection, and conversion to single targets were precisely illustrated. Verification by visualization identified the resulting targets. As a result, not only fish counts but also fish sizing information such as length, thickness, perimeter, compactness, and orientation were obtained. The alpha-beta fish tracking algorithm was employed to extract the speed, change in depth, and the distributed depth relating to fish behavior. Tail-beat pattern was depicted using the maximum intensity of all beams. This methodology can be used as a template and applied to data from BlueView two-dimensional imaging sonar.
Length-weight relationships were estimated for 19 fish species in sargassum beds of Gamak Bay: Aulichthys japonicus, Pseudoblennius cottoides, Pseudoblennius percoides, Ditrema temmincki, Acanthogobius lactipes, Chaenogobius heptacanthus, Cryptocentrus filifer, Pterogobius elapoides, Pterogobius zonoleucus, Hyporhamphus sajori, Hexagrammos agrammus, Rudarius ercodes, Lateolabrax japonicus, Pholis crassispina, Pholis nebulosa, Scomber japonicus, Sebastes inermis, Ernogrammus hexagrammus, and Takifugu niphobles. Samples were caught by surrounding net at depths of <7 m between November 2007 and June 2008. The most abundant families were Gobiidae (26.3%), Cottidae (10.5%), and Pholididae (10.5%). Estimates for parameter b of the length-weight relationship (W=$aL^b$) ranged between 2.491 and 3.354.
