Activation Strategy for the Ship Supply Industry at the Port of Busan

  • This study evaluates how activation plans presented by previous research are perceived by employees in the ship supply industry by sample surveys. Another objective of this study is to also assist in the selection of effective activation plans. It is becoming more and more difficult for the Port of Busan to strengthen its competitiveness in the ship supply industry by maintaining the status quo. Much research extending the scope of research subjects in the port logistics industry indicates that the development of the port logistics industry is very important for creating new value for the Port of Busan. The results shows that improvement in the retail structure and government support had a significantly positive correlation between the importance and necessity of the ship supply industry activation.

  • Purpose - Strategic causes for the failure include unrealistic growth, overexpansion, unfamiliar new markets, volume obsession, unrealistic promises and poor project selection. Organizational causes are insufficient capital and profits, lack of business knowledge, poor financial management, poor sales skills, inadequate marketing, poor leadership, poor leadership transfer, project losses, poor field performance and owner bankruptcy. Uncontrollable causes include industry and economic weakness and banking and surety changes. While helpful, the list provides insufficient clarity regarding the causal roots of failure. Research design, data and methodology - The research framework to organize the information involved with many of the recent and large failures in the industry. Results - This research then identified five dominant root causes - excessive egoism, poor strategic leadership, too much change, loss of discipline and inadequate capitalization. Conclusion - Finally, additional input from external forces may accelerate the firm's pace to failure. It is important on the development of diagnostic tools that are based on this model and that will provide new ways to assess a conglomerate's level of risk for incurring a financial crisis.

Objectively Predicting Ultimate Quality of Post-Rigor Pork Musculature: I. Initial Comparison of Techniques

  • A total of 290 pork loins were selected to include a wide variation of quality to investigate the quality categories into which most pork falls, selection criteria for these categories and methods to objectively assess ultimate pork quality. They were probed at 24 h postmortem (PM) for the following: A) light reflectance by Danish Meat Quality Marbling (MQM), Hennessy Grading Probe (HGP) and Sensoptic Invasive Probe (SIP); B) electrical properties by NWK LT-K21 conductivity (NLT) and Sensoptic Resistance Probe (SRP): and C) pH by NWK pH-K21 (NpH). Also, measurements of % drip loss (PDL) and filter paper wetness (FPW), color brightness (L*), ultimate pH (pHu), lipid content, subjective color (SC), firmness/wetness (SF) and marbling scores (SM) were assessed. Each loin was categorized as either pale, soft and exudative (PSE), reddish-pink, soft and exudative (RSE), reddish-pink, firm and non-exudative (RFN) or dark, firm and dry (DFD). Statistically comparing coefficients of determination (CD), the results indicated that overall, the HGP predicted quality groups slightly better than MQM (CD=71 and 62% respectively), NpH and SRP were less effective (CD= 56 and 44% respectively), and SIP and NLT had the lowest values (CD=36 and 5% respectively). Combining various independent variable did not greatly improve the variation accounted for. When the data was sorted into marbling groups based on lipid content, this was not accurately predicted by any of the probe measurements. The MQM probe remained the best predictor for marbling class and accounted for about 25% of the lipid content variation. This was slightly improved to 33% when pHu was combined with MQM.

혁신형 중소기업 기술금융 지원사업의 적절성에 대한 실증연구 (A Empirical Study on the Relevance of Technology Finance Supporting Business for Technologically Innovative SMEs)

  • 혁신형 중소기업 기술금융의 지속적인 확대와 발전을 위해서 기술금융 지원사업의 적절성이 요구된다. 본 연구에서 기술금융 수혜기업의 선정이 사업 목적과 취지에 적합한지 여부를 실증 분석하였다. 기술금융 여신이 발생될 확률은 기술력등급이 높을수록, 영업이익률이 높을수록 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 반면에 자본금과 업력이 증가할수록 기술금융 여신 승인이 발생될 확률은 점진적으로 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 로지스틱 분석결과 기술력 등급과 기업의 주요 특성이 기술금융 수혜기업 선정에 유의한 영향을 미친 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 모형의 적합성인 정분류율이 높지 않기 때문에, 기술금융의 적절성을 높이기 위한 개선을 제안하였다. 그리고 회귀분석 결과 대출금 규모와 기술력 등급사이에 연관성은 유의하지 않게 나타났다. 본 연구결과와 제안은 기술금융 결정의 적절성과 신뢰성을 확보하는 데 기여할 것이다.

식스 시그마 품질경영활동이 기업의 재무적 성과지표에 미치는 영향연구: 경향점수매칭을 이용하여 (The Study on Relation between Implementation of Six Sigma Quality Management and Financial Performance using Propensity Score Matching)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to study whether the adoption of Six Sigma quality management by a firm positively affects its financial performance. The correlation between the duration of Six Sigma implementation period and the financial status of the firm is investigated as well. Methods: We conduct the analysis using data from Manufacturing Industry Productivity Panel Survey 2013 provided by Korea Productivity Center and Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. Propensity score matching is used to reduce sample selection bias of observational study. Furthermore, we use multiple linear regression in order to study the relationship between the implementation of Six Sigma quality management and financial performance. The return on assets and ratio of net income to net sales are considered as dependent variable and implementation of Six Sigma as independent variable. Results: The indication of this analysis is that implementation of Six Sigma quality management does not significantly enhance financial status. The firms that adopted Six Sigma quality management were categorized into three groups according to the implementation period. Comparison of each group with the firms that do not adopt Six Sigma quality management does not show statistically significant enhancement of financial status. Conclusion: In conclusion, both adoption and duration of six sigma quality management do not affect financial performance significantly.

정보산업에 있어 지식자원 상호보완성 구조가 전략적 동맹과 인수합병 선택에 미치는 영향 분석 (Analyzing the Effects of Knowledge Resource Complementarity Structures on the Choice between Strategic Alliances and Merge and Acquisitions (M&As) in Information Technology Industries)

  • 정보산업이 발전함에 따라 전략적 동맹과 인수합병은 매우 중요한 전략적 의사결정으로 인식되어 왔다. 이러한 중요성에도 불구하고 전략적 동맹과 인수합병 가운데 어떤 지배구조를 선택해야 보다 높은 기업성과를 도출할 수 있는가에 대한 연구는 매우 미미하였다. 본 연구에서는 전략적 동맹과 인수합병 선택에 영향을 미치는 주요 지식자원의 유형을 도출하고 이들 지식자원 간의 상호보완성 구조가 어떻게 전략적 동맹과 인수합병 선택에 영향을 미치는가를 분석하였다. 본 연구는 학문적 관점에서 보면 지식자원 간의 상호보완성 구조 파악 및 검정을 위한 새로운 방법론을 기반으로 지식자원의 유사성과 비유사성에 한정된 기존 연구의 한계를 극복 할 수 있는 새로운 연구 프레임웍과 방법론을 제시하였으며 이를 통해 지식경영 및 전략적 동맹과 인수합병 선택 연구에 일정 정도 기여를 하였다. 실무적 관점에서 보면 경영자로 하여금 전략적 동맹을 선택할 것인지 아니면 인수합병을 선택할 것인지에 대한 구체적인 의사결정 기준을 제공하였다는 점에서 그 의의가 있다.

Institutional Quality, Regulatory Environment and Microeconomic Performance: Evidence from Transition and Non-transition Developing Countries

  • The development of regulatory systems varies between transition and non-transition economies. This suggests that they provide different incentives for entrepreneurial development and could have varied effects on the economy because they have different methods to deal with market failure. However, limited empirical evidence exists to prove the assumption of dichotomy. Using comprehensive data for institutional quality, labor market and financial market development, this research sought to analyze their effect on employment growth at micro level. The results show that the quality of institutions in transition economies are poorer relative to those in non-transition economies, but their financial and labor markets are more developed than the latter. Further analysis for the transition sample shows that the three variables are individually positively related with employment growth. For the non-transition sample, institutional quality and labor market flexibility bear a positive and significant effect on employment. Financial market development enters the model with a negative coefficient when regressed alone, but a joint test of significance finds that all the variables have a positive effect on employment growth. This result could imply that there is interdependence between institutional quality, labor flexibility and financial market development in firm-employment-growth relationship, or complementarity between regulations and the quality of institutions. Alternatively, this finding suggests that a stringently regulated credit market in non-transition economies have a selection effect-allocating credit only to entrepreneurs who already demonstrate strong growth potential. In sum, despite differences in the evolution of regulatory environment between the two samples, both of them complement employment growth at firm level. The overall implication of these findings is that less rigid regulations and coherent policies that are enforced with impartiality provide incentives for firms to expand.

최고경영진의 인적 및 사회적 자본이 정부의 R&D 지원제도 활용과 초기 성과에 미치는 영향 (Top Management's Human and Social Capital Effect on Governmental R&D Support System Utilization and Success)

  • Purpose - This study attempts to analyze whether or not there are characteristics among the top management of companies that promote corporate performance at venture companies. It investigates the characteristics of the human and social capital that are inherent in top management at a venture company and conducts an empirical analysis of hypotheses examining if these characteristics will affect utilization of the governmental R&D support system as well as affect the firm's initial success. Research design, data, and methodology - This study conducted theoretical and empirical research together to accomplish the goal of the study. The pilot study researched human capital and social capital as the independent variables; the governmental R&D support system as the parameter; and, the initial success as the dependent variable. The empirical study carried out research on the model, establishment of hypotheses, and the statistical treatment. A survey was conducted targeting top management of high-tech venture companies in Daedeok Innopolis; 500 questionnaires were distributed; and, 222 were collected. Results - The human and social capital inherent in top management at venture companies in the early stages of their existence become good evaluation data for those who are invested in similar resources. If top management includes strong human and social capital, access to external resources will be easier; these will have a positive influence on the selection of overnmental support systems; and, this proper support will also have a positive influence on the initial success of the venture company. The results revealed the following. First, it was found that when the educational level and functional background, (the top management human capital), are the output function, top management human capital had a significant influence on selection of governmental R&D support funds. Second, it was found that the internal social capital and external social capital, (the top management social capital), had a significant influence on selection of governmental R&D support tasks. Third, it was found that selection of the governmental R&D support tasks at the start of the venture company had a positive influence on the corporate financial performance such as sales, business profits, and the increase in workers; and, had a significant influence on nonfinancial performance such as market share, competitive position, product competitiveness, and the future product development. Conclusions - Selection of the governmental R&D support system is not recognized as part of the direct sales of a venture company in its early stages, but as it can reduce costs for technical development and helps significantly in creating test products and mass production, it has a positive influence on the company's financial performance and nonfinancial performance as a result. Therefore, companies should take great efforts to frequently be selected as a candidate in the governmental R&D support system, as it can help facilitate R&D that requires extensive funds. As a result, companies can expect effects such as job creation and patent applications and they can advance future product sales.

정부의 벤처기업 R&D 지원에서의 역선택 가능성에 관한 연구 : 정부 R&D 수혜기업과 비수혜기업 간 경영효율성 비교를 중심으로 (Adverse Selection in the Government R&D Support for Venture Business : Evidence from the Managerial Efficiency Comparison of the Recipient and Non-recipient of R&D Grants)

  • 최근 정부의 벤처기업 정책 지원은 창업 초기 중기의 벤처기업에 대한 R&D 지원에 초점을 두고 있다. 그러나 정보의 비대칭성 문제로 인한 역선택 가능성, 즉, 정부 R&D가 과연 성장 잠재력이 높은 창업 초기 중기 기업에게 지원되고 있는가에 대한 우려도 제기되고 있다. 특히 창업 중기는 죽음의 계곡으로 인해 벤처기업의 생존율이 크게 낮아지는 구간이기 때문에, 정책효과가 클 것으로 예상되는 우수 벤처기업을 선정하여 지원하는 것이 매우 중요하다. 이에 따라 본 연구는 2015년 벤처기업정밀실태조사 결과를 활용, 기술집약적 제조업 내 중기 벤처기업을 정부 R&D 지원 수혜기업(이하 수혜기업)과 비수혜 기업으로 나누고, 이들의 경영효율성 및 기술 재무성과를 비교하였다. 분석결과, 기술집약적 제조업 내 수혜기업은 비수혜 기업에 비해 경영효율성이 낮았으며, 이러한 경향은 중고위기술 제조업에서 더욱 크게 나타났다. 한편, 기술 및 재무성과 분석 결과, 수혜기업은 기술성은 우수하였으나, 성장성, 수익성, 안정성은 열위에 있음을 확인하였다. 특히 이러한 경향은 중고위기술 제조업 내 세부산업 전반에서 발견되었다. 이는 벤처기업에 대한 정부 R&D 지원 시, 역선택 문제가 우려됨을 시사한다. 따라서 향후 정부는 수혜기업 선정 시 경영효율성 및 재무성과를 중요 평가 기준으로 고려해야할 것이다. 또한 기술성이 뛰어난 기업의 경영효율성 및 재무성과를 제고하기 위한 정책과 함께, 경영효율성이 뛰어난 벤처기업을 정부 R&D 지원에 유인하기 위한 방법도 마련해야할 것이다.

편의점 창업 성장단계에 따른 성공요인 적용 방안에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Application of Success Factors According to the Growth Stage of Convenience Store Startup)

  • 본 연구는 성공 소상공인 창업자의 창업 이전 단계부터 성장단계까지 단계별 성공요인을 파악하여 창업 초기 인지한 성공요인과 성공 후 인지한 성공요인을 통해 효과적인 지원 방안을 모색하고자 한다. 이를 위해 성공한 편의점 가맹점주를 대상으로 창업 준비단계부터 초기, 성장단계에 따라 성공요인을 도출하기 위해 전기적 인터뷰를 통한 질적연구를 진행하였다. 소상공인 창업의 성공요인은 창업기업 성과(performance)에 대한 연구에서 적용하는 ERI모델과 ERIS모델을 활용하여 프랜차이즈 편의점 창업의 특성을 고려하여 연구했으며, 성장단계에 따른 성공요인을 도출하기 위해 프랜차이즈 성장단계를 반영한 Sasser et al.(1978)의 다점포 외식기업 수명주기(The multisite service firm life cycle)를 활용하여 성공요인을 연구하였다. 연구 결과, 성공한 가맹점의 핵심 요인은 첫 점포 입지선정, 전략적 추가 점포 입지선정, 성공적인 재계약으로 나타났다. 창업자의 특성에 따라서는 진취적 성향의 가맹점주는 전략적 추가 점포 입지선정, 상권방어 등에 적극적인 자세를 취하였고, 상대적으로 보수적인 가맹점주는 관리적 측면에서 점포운영, 재계약 등에 적극적인 자세로 경영하는 모습을 보여주었다. 특히 창업 준비단계에서는 창업가 마인드가 중요하며, 창업 전주기에서는 창업자의 경영전략의 중요성이 발견되었다. 본 연구는 이러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로 향후 성장단계에 효과적으로 적용하기 위한 창업 방안을 구체적으로 모색하였다.
