  • Objective : The exact position of the lesion during the pallidotomy is critical to obtain the clinical improvement of parkinson's disease without damage to surrounding structure. Ventriculogrphy, CT(computed tomograpy) or MRI(magnetic resonance imaging) have been used to determine the initial coordinates of stereotactic target for pallidotomy. The goal of this study was to determine whether microelectrode recording significantly improves the neurophysiologic localization of the target obtained from MRI. Methods : Twenty patients were studied. They underwent a unilateral pallidotomy. Leksell frame was applied and T1 axial images parallel to the AC-PC(anterior commissure-posterior commissure) plane using a 1.5 Tesla MRI with 3mm slice thickness were obtained. Anteroposterior coordinate of target was chosen at 2mm in front of the midcommissural point and lateral coordinate between 19 and 22mm from the midline. The vertical coordinate was calculated on coronal slice using a fast spin echo inversion recovery sequence(FSEIR) related to the position of the choroidal fissure and ranged over 4-5mm below the AC-PC plane. Confirmation of the anatomical target was done on axial slices using the same FSEIR sequence . Microrecording was done at the pallidum contralateral to the symptomatic side using an electrode with a tip diameter of $1{{\mu}m}$ diameter tip and 1.1-1.4 mOhm impedance at 1000Hz. Electrophysiologic localization of the target was also confirmed intraoperatively by macrostimulation. Results : Microrecording techniques were reliable to define the transition from the base of the pallidum which was characterized by the disappearance of spike activity and by the change of the audible background activity. Signals from high amplitude neurons firing at 200-400Hz were recorded in the pallidal base. X, Y and Z coordinates of target obtained from the MRI were within 1mm from the X, Y, Z coordinates obtained with microrecording in 16 patients (80%), 15 patients(75%), 10 patients(50%) respectively. The difference of Y coordinate between on MRI and on microrecording was 4mm in only one patient. Conclusion : The MRI was accurate to localize the target within 1mm of the error from microrecording target in 70% of the patients. 4mm discrepancy was observed only once. We conclude that MRI alone can be used to determine the target for pallidotomy in most patients. However, microrecording technique can still be extremely valuable in patents with aberrant anatomy or unusual MRI coordinates. We also consider physiologic confirmation of the target using macrostimulation to be mandatory in all cases.

  • This paper describes on the NOx/CO emission characteristics, temperature characteristics and flame structures when firing coal derived synthetic gas especially for gases of Buggenum and Taean IGCC. These combustion characteristics were observed by conducting ambient-pressure elevated-temperature combustion tests in GE7EA model combustor when varying heat input and nitrogen dilution ratio. Nitrogen addition caused decrement in adiabatic flame temperature, thus resulting in the NOx reduction. At low heat input condition, nitrogen dilution raised the CO emission dramatically due to incomplete combustion. These NOx reduction and CO arising phenomena were observed at certain flame temperature of $1500^{\circ}C$ and $1250^{\circ}C$, respectively. As increasing nitrogen dilution, adiabatic flame temperature and combustor liner temperature were decreased and singular points were detected due to change in flame structure such as flame lifting. From the results, the effect of nitrogen dilution on the NOx/CO and flame structure was examined, and the test data will be utilized as a reference to achieve optimal operating condition of the Taean IGCC demonstration plant.

  • This paper is study on the pressure monitoring system(PMS) for ship's engine performance analysis( SEPA) based on web, with high speed and accuracy. This system is composed of pressure sensor, monitoring module with multi channel A/D converter, TCP/IP and satellite internet communication system. Existing domestic products measure cylinder pressure when piston of first explosive cylinder reached TDC(the top dead center) point and then measure next cylinder pressure manually each angle divided by a constant rotating interval. But presented system monitors in the local and web computer, using pressure information transmitted from pressure sensor installed on each engine. In this system, it is possible to increase the accuracy of the engine performance analysis because not only each TDC points but cylinder pressures synchronized with the TDC points could be measured in real time, accurately. And therefore, it may be used in a various diagnosis of main engines, such as deviations of each cylinder maximum pressures(Pmax) and the TDC firing positions and combustion conditions.

  • This study aimed at the identification of the black coating materials on the pottery surface and manufacturing technique of black burnished pottery excavated from the Pungnaptoseong, Seoul, which is estimated to be royal fortress of Beakje. According to observation of black coated surface and raw materials, potteries can be divided into two groups. The first group potteries have black inner and black surface with well-selected particles. Second group potteries are black in surface only with unevenly selected particles. Each group seems to represent different manufacturing technique in clay selection, color development timing and method. The black burnished pottery contains high values of CaO, $P_2O_5$, L.O.I. and lower content of $Fe_2O_3$ compared with gray pottery excavated from the same site, which indicates plant ashes were used for coloring the surface of pottery in black. According to the result of SEM-EDS mapping of black burnished pottery, carbon was concentrated on pottery surface, while iron was concentrated on the surface of the gray pottery. Based on XRD analysis, firing temperature of the black burnished potteries were fired low temperature range at 700 to $900^{\circ}C$, and that of the gray potteries ranged from $900^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$.

  • Frangible bullets, which are shredded after impact on a target, reduce the possibility of both ricochet and unexpected injury in shooting training and in mission acts in dams, nuclear power plants, and cultural properties. Reducing the levels of hazardous materials in shooting ranges, such as lead, has become an important agenda for the government and environmental groups. In this study, the shape of a frangible bullet was designed for efficient shredding, and the safety and reliability were confirmed by actual firing under different process conditions. In addition, the physical characteristics, such as compaction pressure, density, and frangibility of each process, were compared by analyzing the microstructure of the sintered frangible bullet. The experiment revealed the smallest fragmentation after impact on the target under the following conditions: Cu-Sn 85:15; sintering temperature, 600℃; sintering time, one hour. Further development of the process conditions and experimental methods will contribute to the performance and environmental improvement of a frangible bullet.

  • This paper reports a design improvement study to solve the stoppage phenomenon caused by the launch-support device applied to K105A1. The K105A1 is a weapon system equipped with an old 105 mm towed howitzer in a wheeled vehicle, which provides superior maneuverability compared to track equipment. The launch support device serves to withstand fire impact and load. In this way, this device is fixed firmly to the ground in preparation for the shooting mission and is responsible for the critical performance, such as fixing the position of the vehicle. On the other hand, during the field test, a temporary stoppage of the launch support occurred, which caused a problem of not being fixed to the ground. To solve this problem, the cause of failure was analyzed by a replay test and parts inspection. In addition, the operating concept, method, and design were analyzed to derive the cause and solve the problem by changing the parts design. Finally, the performance and firing missions were performed normally by applying the changed design to K105A1. The performance stability and reliability of the launch support device were confirmed, which are expected to be of great assistance in the development of military equipment in the future.

  • Ocean dumping of sewage sludge is banned. Therefore, it is needed to develop alternative treatment method. Sewage sludge and waste glass are used to prepare lightweight brick. Large amount of energy is consumed to prepare building material, because of its high preparation temperature, or above $1,200^{\circ}C$. We study to prepare lightweight brick, using sewage sludge and waste glass as raw materials in this research. Lightweight brick was made at low temperature of below $800^{\circ}C$ to reduce $CO_2$ emission by geopolymer technique. Calcination temperature, mixing ratio of sewage sludge/waste glass and water glass/water were discussed to evaluate their effect on the brick prepared. In this study, the optimal conditions for preparing bricks was $750^{\circ}C$ of firing temperature, 1.5 of mixing ratio for water glass/water and 10 : 90 wt% of sewage sludge/waste glass. At this condition, compressive strength and specific gravity of brick prepared were 5.1 MPa and 0.46, respectively. These values satisfy the criteria on a lightweight brick.
