  • The main purpose of this study is to raise the point at issue and to propose reform direction about the current performance criteria of fire resistance through the examination of the fire resistance required for each use of compartment by using performance-based fire safety design method. To examine the performance criteria of fire resistance, this study compared the equivalent time of fire exposure which was calculated by using time-equivalent formulae with the required fire resistance time determined by existing prescriptive code, and surveyed factors such as the fire load energy density, ventilation factor, fire compartment materials and fire compartment geometry in order to calculate the equivalent time of fire exposure.

  • The strength of steel material in a concrete filled steel tube (CFT) is reduced in fire, but the filled interior concrete structurally ensures the fire resistance due to its high thermal capacity. More, the contractibility of CFT is excellent since it can be constructed without form work. This research analyzed the interior concrete strength and deformation characteristics, which are the influence factors of the fire resistance of CFT, in proportion to the axial load ratio. The fire resistance performance according to changes of the axial load ratio showed great fluctuation. As $280{\times}280{\times}6$ CFT columns with the concrete strengths of 24 MPa and 40 MPa and the axial load ratios of 0.9, 0.6, and 0.2 in accordance with KS F 2257-1 and 7 were heated with loading to examine the fire resistance performance, the 24 MPa concrete exhibited the fire resistance time as 27, 113, and 180 minutes for the axial load ratios, 0.9, 0.6, and 0.2 respectively. In case of 40 MPa concrete, the fire resistance time were turned out to be 19 and 28 minutes for the axial load ratios, 0.9 and 0.6 respectively. The results of 40 MPa concrete showed the much lower fire resistance performance when comparing with those of 24 MPa concrete. The fire resistance performance was not increased significantly when the axial load ratio was reduced. Therefore, the deceased fire resistance performance of high strength concrete is assumed to be caused by the internal pressure increase upon the heat application.

  • The fire resistance performance of 2 RC slabs after exposure to the ISO-834 fire standard without loading has been experimentally investigated. A Comparison is made of the fire resistance performance between RC slabs without PP(polypropylene) fibers and RC slabs with PP fibers. From the fire test results, the presence of PP fibers in RC slabs can reduce spalling and enhance their fire resistance. Until now, the determination of fire resistance of reinforced concrete(RC) slabs has essentially been based on tabulated data. According to ACI 216 code and EUROCODE 2, the design of concrete structures is essentially based on tabulated data for appropriate concrete cover and various fire durations. From the comparison between fire test results and codes, current fire design provisions of codes such as the ACI 216 and the EUROCODE 2 are unconservative for estimating mechanical properties of RC slabs at elevated temperatures.

  • Concrete filled steel Tube(CFT) columns have great strength but also fire resistance performance due to the heat storage effect of concrete. In this research, we focus on the fire performance of CFT using 100 MPa concrete without fire protection. We use steel fiber and nylon fiber for fire resistance. We perform the fire test of CFT specimen with loading 200, 300 and 400 ton. To investigate the effect of loading to fire resistance, we compare the fire resistance time according to the loading.

  • 17 kinds of fire resistant paint which are currently used were painted on the MDF, to find flame resistance performance and smoking characteristics according to principal ingredient and characteristics of fire resistant paint. 45 degree combustion test and smoke density test were conducted to investigate the flame resistance performance and smoking characteristics. According to the 45 degree combustion test, acrylic resin type fire resistant paint showed the most excellent fire resistance performance. And the water soluble fire resistant paint showed better fire resistance performance compare to the solvent soluble paints. Also gloss paint showed better fire resistance performance than the flat paint. Based on the smoke density test, the smoke generation of fire resistant treated specimen of acrylic resin type was least. And the water soluble fire resistant paint generate little smoke than solvent soluble fire resistant paint.

  • This paper explains the Japanese present situations relevant to the fire resistance performance. Performance-based fire provisions was introduced in 1998 for the first time when the Building Standard Law was amended. However, performance-based fire resistance design had been used since long before the official introduction of performance-based provisions. A Comprehensive Technology Development Project of Ministry of Construction from 1982 to 1986 established a technical basis for performance-based fire safety engineering in Japan. A system of calculation methods for fire resistance verification was prescribed in the Ministry Notification in 2000 utilizing the results of this project as a background. This method, referred to as the Fire Resistance Verification Method (FRVM), is the standard method to verify the fire resistance performance of principal building parts such as columns, beams, and walls of steel, concrete, or wood structured buildings. For tall buildings, however, more advanced method for performance verification is often necessary because new building materials or structural systems are often used for these buildings. An example project of tall building owned by a major newspaper company is presented in this paper. Advanced thermal deformation analysis is executed to secure the fire resistance of the building.

  • The present study was to develop a dry PFB method similar to the existing gypsum board construction method in order to apply the existing wet PFB method that uses fire-resistant adhesive. It was found that the existing wet method can produce concrete compressive strength of 80MPa and fire resistance of 3 hours with 30mm PF boards. The goal of development in this study was fire resistance of 3 hours through dry construction of 15mm fire-resistant boards. 1. Improved PF board was prepared by adding inorganic fiber to existing board and using aggregate with grain size of 3mm or less. Molding was done at temperature higher than that for existing PF board molding. While wet curing is used for existing PF boards, this study used dry curing in order to enhance heat insulation performance. 2. According to the results of fire resistance test, when the dry PF method was applied, the temperature of the main reinforcing bar was 116℃ in 15mm, 103.8℃ in 20mm, and 94℃ in 25mm, and these results satisfied the current standards for fire resistance control presented by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs. When a 3-hour fire resistance test was performed and the external properties of the specimen were examined, the outermost gypsum board hardly remained and internal PF board maintained its form without thermal strain.

  • On the result of load-bearing fire test to confirm the fire resistance of a composit beam, if the composit beam has lower fire resistance than required standard, it can be improved by section change. But if there are many types of section change, it takes much time and cost owing to conducting many tests. On this study, it was confirmed which part of the asymmetric H-section composit beam affected most on fire resistance by heat-transfer analysis. Then, we checked the tendency of improving fire resistance depend on section change by heat-transfer and non-linear structural analysis and suggested a changed section having 1-hour fire resistance.

  • Steel beams are one of primary member and those carries the horizontal load and floor load to axial member. To avoid structural failure when the steel beams are exposed to fire, fire resistance performance requires. Till now, the evaluation for fire resistance of the beam was conducted using the maximum load and standard fire curve defined in the KS F 2257. But recently the constructional patterns are changing toward multi-function performance to get a better structural performance and fire resistance as well. In this paper to get the databases for fire resistance, limiting temperatures of the beam, load-bearing fire tests according to load ratios, two grades of compressive concrete strengths were applied.

  • Bridge fire hazard has become a growing concern over the last decade due to the rapid increase of ground transportation of hazardous materials and resulting fire incidents. The lack of fire safety provisions in steel bridges can be a significant issue owing steel thermal properties that lead to fast degradation of steel properties at elevated temperatures. Alternatively, the development of composite action between steel girders and concrete decks can increase the fire resistance of steel bridges and meet fire safety requirements in some applications. This paper reviews the fire problem in steel bridges and the fire behavior of composite steel-concrete bridge girders. A numerical model is developed to trace the fire response of a typical bridge girder and is validated using measurements from fire tests. The selected bridge girder is composed by a hot rolled steel section strengthened with bearing stiffeners at midspan and supports. A concrete slab sitting on the top of the girder is connected to the slab through shear studs to provide full composite action. The validated numerical model was used to investigate the fire resistance of real scale bridge girders and the effect of the composite action under different scenarios (standard and hydrocarbon fires). Results showed that composite action can significantly increase the fire resistance of steel bridge girders. Besides, fire severity played an important role in the fire behavior of composite girders and both factors should be taken into consideration in the design of steel bridges for fire safety.
