  • Jet fire, pool fire, and vapor cloud explosion are major accident scenarios in LPG filling station. The protection wall would mitigate radiation effect in a jet fire. In case of a pool fire, the protection wall would restrict expanding the pool area. The protection wall might both obstruct the dispersion of released vapor and protect blast overpressure in a vapor cloud explosion scenario. In this paper, An availability assessment method of the protection wall how much reduce damage to receptors is proposed. Additionally application cases are presented for the effectiveness of protection wall in the LPG filling station. The study shows that the protection wall can effectively reduce the death probabilities of receptors located behind the wall in cases of the jet fires and the vapor cloud explosions.

  • FCEV uses 250 ~ 450 V instead of using 12 V battery. High voltage vehicle can cause electric shock, fire and explosion accident. Therefore, it has potential factors that can cause hazard of safety for users. United states of America and Europe legislate regulations such as ECE R100, FMVSS 305 for regulating electrical safety during driving or after collision. The company manufacturing high voltage components must do advanced R&D about Method for improving and confirming the safety of high voltage. We develop the specific hardware components of high voltage wiring system for the power train system and power supply system of Hyundai Motors FCEV. This paper shows test method of insulative performance for securing the electrical safety of high voltage components such as power cable, connectors and buss-bar, and proposals the guide line value for human safety of FCEV according to the test result of our development components.

  • Accident likelihood is growing due to a correlation for gas and electricity installed in the area of dense energy consumption like traditional market and underground shopping center. In order to prevent and respond accident risks related to gas and electricity in this area, it should be monitored and predicted for factors of gas leak or electricity by developing safety management system. This study is about accident prediction model development considering fire risk factor related to gas accident. The temperature variation characteristic near a gas burner was analyzed. Also, accident prediction algorithm and related module were developed to prevent fire in the area of dense energy consumption.

  • In order to secure safety and improve work efficiency of forest firefighting crews, performance evaluation criteria for safety gloves were developed. Since the standard for forest firefighting safety gloves is not available in Korea, we started the study based on the standard for firefighting safety gloves operated by KFI. 12 test items were selected excluding 5 test items out of the 17 test items through the consultation of stakeholders and the review of foreign standards. Two types of general safety gloves used by forest firefighting crews and one firefighting gloves were tested by applying KFI standard and the results were compared. Materials such as nylon or polyurethane which are weak to fire are not suitable for forest firefighting safety gloves. We compared the criteria of KFI, ISO 16073, NFPA 1977, NFPA 1971 and BS EN 659, and finally selected 12 test items and acceptance criteria suitable for the work environment of forest firefighting crews in Korea.

  • Recent social needs for promoting traffic safety increased and the demand social security in economic, increasing the demand for environmentally friendly rail transport. In particular, when train express such as to secure reliability KTX(Korea Train eXpress) from potential disaster(fire) in the train operation caused by the train express running has been very important. Railroad fire extinguishing system is operated to fire exploding before reaching the flashing point more important than early to quickly detect because of CAN(Controller Area Network) communication to fire suppression and fire receiver, interface, fire fighting equipment from HMI((Human Machine Interface) and fire high-performance to research and development for intelligent composite fire receiver is required.

  • Release and fire/explosion tests of flammable gas are extremely dangerous. Furthermore, it is difficult to select the site where the experiment can be performed. In these reasons, gas flow analysis(CFD) has been used as much as possible. However, with the opening of the Energy Safety Empirical Research Center in Yeongwol-gun, Gangwon-do in October 2016, it was possible to conduct releases and detection tests of small scale combustible gas as well as large scale / high pressure / ultra low temperature experiments. In this study, LPG leaked after the calibration and placement of the sensor, the sensor detected LPG and the data were visualized as a contour map. And the differences between the actual release(28s, max 3.7[m]) and the analysis were analyzed compared to the FLACS analyzed under the same conditions.

  • A fire station and scuba have operated filling facilities for respiratory high-pressure cylinder without getting authority or reporting according to High-Pressure Gas Safety Control Act. They need facility improvement and special management to make provision for the time of accident during filling process. The Government have strived to correct illegal operations and suggested an alternative, establishing and operating the safety cabinet. It insures a safety being distance from danger caused by overpressure and a safety provoked by the protective wall equals or superiors. The safety cabinet is required to have an internal structure that smoothly distribute overpressure at the time of rupture. Plus, it needs to minimize fragments. It is also equipped with the performance of protective wall that makes overpressure to outside vent on the place where there is no person (top or bottom). This study calculated the consequence of physical explosion damage and built a prototype of safety cabinet. In addition, through the gas burst test, it derives for the ways to mitigate the physical explosion damage.

  • Traditionally all concrete roof type LNG storage tank have been constructing in Korea regardless of LNG tank types. But a steel roof LNG storage tank has merits relatively in designing larger scale tanks and construction cost so it is on the table to apply. This study was carried for the standardized development of impact and fire hazard analysis on a 200,000$k{\ell}$ steel roof LNG storage tank designed by KOGAS and for getting quantitative safety data on a steel roof LNG storage tank compared with a conventional concrete roof LNG storage tank by evaluating with this method. Hazard analysis on each four impact and fire scenarios were developed and evaluated by using finite element methods.

  • Steel and concrete composite structures are commonly applied in multi-story buildings as they maximise the material strength through composite action. Despite the popularity of employing a trapezoidal deck slab, limited experimental data are available under elevated temperatures. The behaviour of the headed shear stud embedded in a transverse trapezoidal deck and solid slab was investigated at both ambient and fire conditions. Twelve push-out tests were conducted according to the ISO 834 standard fire utilising a customised electric furnace. A stud shearing failure was observed in the solid slab specimen, whereas the failure mode was changed from a concrete-dominated failure to the stud shearing in the transverse deck specimen with an increase in temperature. Comparisons between the experimental observations and design requirements are presented. The Eurocode design guidance on the transverse deck slab gives a highly conservative estimate for shear resistance. A new design formula was proposed to determine the capacity of the shear connection regardless of the slab type when the stud shearing occurs at high temperatures.
