  • Fire protection for nuclear power plants should be designed according to the concept of "Defense in Depth" to achieve the reactor safety shutdown. This concept focuses on fire prevention, fire suppression and safe shutdown. Fire prevention is the first line of "Defense in Depth" and the licensee should establish administrative measures to minimize the potential for fire to occur. Administrative measures should include procedures to control handling and use of combustibles. Electrical cables is the major contributor of fire loads in nuclear power plants, therefore electrical cables should be fire retardant. Electrical cables installed in nuclear power plants should pass the flame test in IEEE-383 standard in accordance with NUREG-0800, "Standard Review Plan for the Review of Safety Analysis Reports for Nuclear Power Plants". To assure the fire retardant of electrical cables during design life, both aged and unaged cable specimens should be tested in accordance with IEEE-383. It can be generally thought that the flammability of electrical cables has been increased by wearing as time passed, however the results from fire retardant tests performed in U.S.A and Korea indicate the inconsistent tendency of aging and consequential decrease in flammability. In this study, it is expected that the effective methodology for validation of fire retardant performance would be identified through the review of the results from fire retardant tests.

  • This paper analyzed firefighting officers' use situations such as the use time, maximum working pressure, hose diameter, etc. of fire pumps at fire sites and carried out various performance tests by pressures, hose diameters and quantities of fire pumps based on its results because the waterproof performance criterion for a fire pump installed in a fire engine is different from the operation situations at the site and is not clearly prescribed. As a result of site survey, the site uses a higher pressure than the standard water discharge pressure (0.85 MPa) or the high-pressure water discharge pressure (1.4 MPa) prescribed by the approval Standard of the fire pump performance on fire truck. In addition, as a result of pump performance test, the discharged water flow rate, water discharge pressure, etc. was measured to be very different from the currently prescribed the approval standard depending on the hose diameter and firefighting nozzle, so the result of this study proposes a new standard.

  • Arc Fault Current is an electric discharge which is occurred in two opposite electrode. In this paper, AFCI(arc fault circuit interrupter) is designed for the interruption of arc fault current which is occurred in the local electric network. This arc is one of the main causes of electric fire. Arc fault in electrical network has the characteristics of low current, high impedance and high frequency. Conventional arc fault circuit interrupter does not have the arc current interrupt function. Hence, Arc current controller is designed for the interruption of arc fault current which has the modified arc characteristics.

  • Performance-based design (PBD) for large scale high rise buildings has been enforced to secure fire and evacuation safety since July 1, 2011. As various types of trial and error were expected in the early stage, to suggest solutions to the problems that might be followed by the enforcement, the regulations on PBD were reviewed and a questionnaire survey to fire protection specialists was carried out. It was confirmed that PBD is required for large scale apartment buildings, and specific and detail criteria for PBD methodology and evaluations, education for PBD to personnel who design and evaluate are also in need.

  • Sprinkler system is the most effective fire suppression with high confidence among active fire extinguishing systems. According to the installation of the related system on buildings, more separation area of fire protection can be considered to the fire protection design, and also lower differential pressure (12.5 Pascal) is permitted on lobby of fire escape stairs and emergency elevator (25 Pascal shall be considered for none sprinkler system) with economic factor. More details will be handled on the related studies.

  • Purpose: Currently, in the case of domestic fire fighting facility design, it is difficult to secure highquality manpower due to low design costs and overheated competition between companies, so there is a limit to improving the fire safety performance of buildings. Accordingly, AI-based firefighting design solutions were studied to solve these problems and secure leading fire engineering technologies. Method: Through AutoCAD, which is widely used in existing fire fighting design, the procedures required for basic design and implementation design were processed, and AI technology was utilized through the YOLO v4 object recognition deep learning model. Result: Through the design process for fire fighting facilities, the facility was determined and the drawing design automation was carried out. In addition, by learning images of doors and pillars, artificial intelligence recognized the part and implemented the function of selecting boundary areas and installing piping and fire fighting facilities. Conclusion: Based on artificial intelligence technology, it was confirmed that human and material resources could be reduced when creating basic and implementation design drawings for building fire protection facilities, and technology was secured in artificial intelligence-based fire fighting design through prior technology development.

  • This study is performed to apply a standard to evaluate fire protection assessment for tunnel structures when a fire breaks out in the road tunnel. Recently, a number of road tunnels have been rapidly increased and fire risk also multiplyed according to extend tunnel length, due to natural features and environmentally-friendly road construction in Korea. But we have not yet been prescribed appropriate time-temperature curve for tunnel fire. Therefore, we presented fire design model and investigated time-temperature curve proposed by a foreign country considering traffic, a kinds of vehicles which are a basis of heat rate. At the end, Hydrocarbon modified curve applied as design fire model by using numerical analysis and presented design fire model and examined the effects of tunnel structures.

  • This study examined the effects of the wind conditions, such as wind velocity and wind directions, on the performance of the mechanical smoke exhaust systems for high-rise building fires. A scaled model design and CFD simulations were used to verify the effects both quantitatively and qualitatively. The results showed that the smoke exhaust velocity of the mechanical exhaust system can be reduced by up to 17% at a wind velocity of 5 m/s (equivalent to an outdoor wind speed of 16 m/s) and a wind direction of ${\theta}=5^{\circ}$. In addition, the angle of the outdoor wind direction below ${\theta}=25^{\circ}$ had a significantly influence on the smoke exhaust flow rate and reduced exhaust performance of the smoke exhaust system in a fire.

  • The design of an occupant protection equipment has been considered as the important process in developing a new car since the crash performance plays an important role on the market. The cost is increased when an unexpected real test is carried out in the proto-design stage. Thus, the exact prediction of a crash performance can reduce the number of full-car test. In this research, the robust design of an airbag system considering the frontal crash is suggested to predict the more reliable responses. On the contrary, most existing researches do not consider the uncertainties. The uncertainties treated in this research are the tolerances of the vent hole, the time to fire and the length of a strap in airbag and the tolerance of the load limiter load in seat belt. The Taguchi method is utilized to determine the robust optimum of each parameter

  • With the recent enlargement and complication of buildings, damage caused by the incidents of fires breaking out are escalating. Consequently, the use of sprinkler facilities is increasing among water-based fire extinguishing systems. Piping materials used in fire prevention systems include carbon steel (for general or pressure pipeline), CPVC, copper, and stainless-steel. Among these, the steel and CPVC pipes, which are commonly employed in fire prevention, were considered for testing the reliability of the water-based systems. This analysis was performed using the PIPENET software to perform hydraulic calculations in order to examine the flow and pressure at the terminal head when the corrosion coefficient was applied; this coefficient was applied considering the aging of pipes. Assuming a uniform pipe diameter in the steel pipes, the rated flow in the pump installed on the first floor of the basement was reduced by over 10% after 20 years had passed (C value of 90); moreover, the reduction in pressure and flow at its terminal head exceeded 30% and 16.5%, respectively. The results indicate that it is difficult to ensure the reliability of these fire prevention facilities. Furthermore, according to our estimation, considering 30 years had passed (C value of 80), the rated flow of the pump was reduced by over 15%, and the corresponding reduction in pressure and flow at its terminal head exceeded 42% and 24%, respectively.
