  • The domestic wooden cultural properties applied to the sprinkler extinguishing system was confirmed extinguishing performance through fire experiments. Consists of wooden cultural properties of a fire, a flammable material is vulnerable in terms of. The scale of fire will occur to vary appearance of the initial fire in case of arson. Sprinkler nozzles of the characteristics, the discharging pressure is 1 bar and the flow rate is 80 lpm, applied in this experiment. Fire performance experiments were tested in two separated in each of the scale of the fire and cultural properties. Fire extinguishing performance test results was low in high ceilings and two or more units of the fire scale. Fire growth environment of the actual wooden cultural properties to experimental models when you consider that it is more vulnerable, sprinkler extinguishing system is required sufficient verification in order to apply fire protection of the wooden cultural properties.

  • Recently, a mega project such as Korea-China or Korea-Japan undersea tunnel project has been emerged for detail discussion and the interest in undersea tunnel is on the rise. More severe damage by train fire is expected in undersea tunnel comparing to ground tunnel and thus the study on more efficient fire extinguishing system, besides existing disaster prevention design is underway. To that end, a full-scale fire tests using CAF fire extinguishing system which has been developed by modifying traditional foam fire extinguishing system for fire suppression at rescue station in timely manner were conducted over 7 times. The test was conducted after setting the rescue station in virtual tunnel with a car of KTX. As a result of using compressed air foam directly to the fire source, 30 liter of Heptane combustibles was extinguished within 1 minutes. Applicability of compressed air foam to train fire at rescue station in undersea tunnel was has been proven and further study is considered required while changing the nozzle angle and location so as to achieve quick and easy extinguishing goal, making use of the advantage of CAF, as well as to reduce the fire water and chemicals required.

  • Objectives: This is a case of air exposure assessment conducted after researchers complained of headaches and odor due to residual substances from fire extinguishing agents spread throughout the laboratory due to a malfunction of the fire extinguishing facility. Methods: A component analysis was conducted on the residual substances of a fire extinguishing agent spread in a laboratory using Py-GC-MS (pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry) at the research institute's own central equipment research center. As a result of the component analysis, several types of substances were detected. Among these, five types of substances subject to work environment measurement in the aromatic hydrocarbon series, which can affect headaches and odor, were selected as substances subject to exposure assessment in the air, and the measurement and analysis methods of the target substances were conducted in accordance with the KOSHA Guide for each substance. Conclusions: The measurement results showed that all 5 types of substances were not detected at locations A, B, and C. This is believed to be the result of the residual substances in the fire extinguishing agent being measured when approximately two months had elapsed after being exposed to the test bench, and the substances already exposed had volatilized and disappeared. In this survey, it is believed that the measurement process is more important than the measurement results.

  • Purpose: The study want to verify application the medium expantion foam extinguisher of expantion foam rate and fire extinguishing Performance test because the medium expansion system can maintain the discharge distance less affected by air currents, and the foam agent can be used efficiently. Method: For the study, the medium-expansion testing apparatus was manufactured and with synthetic surfactant foam agent of (class B) fire extinguishing model, and Fire Performance was analyzed for foam expansion rate and the fire agent consumption was measured and analyzed. Results: We measured the medium-spray testing apparatus and found that the expansion rate was 26.1 times. The test results of a 20-unit fire extinguishing model show that the extinguishing time is faster than the high and low foam expansion. It has been analyzed that it is possible to apply a hand-operated with a hose reel or medium expansion apparatus. Conclusion: Considering that the foaming agent and the extinguishing performance of the medium foam ratio are excellent, It is necessary to introduce the technical standards of medium foam agent for the introduction of hand-operated equipment, such as hose reel or portable medium foam apparatus.

  • This research is to evaluate the fire extinguishing performance of Compressed Air Foam System and this test was conducted using Foam Head System. Compressed Air Foam System adopt the methods of causing the foam by mixing compressed air in foam-aqueous solution, In Overseas, CAFS (Compressed Air Foam System) is generally used because long distance discharge is possible and the water damage can be minimized by reducing the water usage. In this study, Comparative analysis on fire extinguishing effect is done through test to compare the performance between Foam System applied existing air mixture method and Compressed Air Foam System applied AFFF 3 %, foam-extinguishing-agent based on UL162 standard. In Compressed Air Foam System, the volume proportion of air mixture to foam-aqueous solution is 1 to 1 and discharging flow rate is 140 L/min, 160 L/min, 180 L/min, 200 L/min each. As a result of the test, in terms of fire extinguishing performance, fire suppression time for Compressed Air Foam Systems is shorter than for General Air Mixture System in all flow conditions.

  • The concentrations of inert gases ($N_2$, Ar, $CO_2$ and He) required to induce the flame instabilities such as swing, rotation, lifted and blow-out were measured in a cup burner nonpremixed flames for $CH_4$ and $C_3H_8$ fuels. Quantitative differences in the extinguishing concentration with fire suppression criteria (i.e. blow-out or onset of flame instability) were also examined. It was found that the difference in extinguishing concentration was increased with the appearance of lifted flame and the low extinguishing performance of inert gaseous. The maximum difference in extinguishing concentration with the suppression criteria was approximately 35% at the highest fuel velocity condition (1.3 cm/s) for the $C_3H_8$-air nonpremixed flame. It can be also expected that the extinguishing concentration by the criteria based on the onset of flame instability will provide the useful information from the viewpoint of the accurate and economical design concentration.

  • Carbon dioxide principally extinguishes fires by smothering, but an acceptable amount of extinguishing agent is needed. To assure the performance of carbon dioxide systems in Korea, computer programs certified by NEMA are being applied in system design. But the design errors can occur because the geometry of a model test facility is not the same as that of the actual fire area. Since the discharge rate tends to vary considerably with the flow pattern in a pipe, an on-site discharge test is necessary to ensure the performance of the system, especially with low pressure carbon dioxide. Technical standards for carbon dioxide systems do not give detailed guidelines for discharge tests at present. Based on comparative analysis of standards and practical tests, this paper suggests a methodology for on-site discharge tests.

  • This study collected powder extinguishers with 6-10 years of elapsed life from January 2012 to January 2017 in market, factory, and apartment areas to experiment with changes in fineness and to examine the characteristics of extinguishing power. First, in the case of ABC powder, 98.3 wt% of the 8-year market area and 98.6 wt% of the 10-year apartment complex were found to be inappropriate in the first, second, and third arithmetic average analysis of the powder extinguisher from 6 to 10 years. That is, the fine distribution and size of the powder extinguishing agent particles should be managed within an appropriate range. It is analyzed that the powder fire extinguisher may experience a change in the fineness of the powder depending on the external environment exposure, placement, management status, and age of use, resulting in a decrease in digestive power or inability to radiate. Second, the fire extinguisher cannot be used in the initial fire suppression depending on the place of deployment, the environment of deployment, the progress of the number of years of use, and maintenance, so it is necessary to strengthen the device that enables fire extinguisher maintenance and inspection. Third, in the manufacturing process, the charging method should also be reviewed in consideration of the conditions of the workplace, the humid season, and the rainy environment.
