  • This paper presents a study on the analysis for reducing the number of false alarms in fire detection system. In order to intelligent algorithm fuzzy logic is adopted in developing fire detection system to reduce false alarm. The intelligent fire detection algorithm compared and analyzed the fire and non-fire signatures measured in circuits simulating flame fire and smoldering fire. The algorithm has input variables obtained by fire experiment with K-type thermocouple and optical smoke sensor. Also triangular membership function is used for inference rules. And the antecedent part of inference rules consists of temperature and smoke density, and the consequent part consists of fire probability. A fire-experiment is conducted with paper, plastic, and n-heptane to simulate actual fire situation. The results show that the intelligent fire detection algorithm suggested in this study can more effectively discriminate signatures between fire and similar fire.

  • This study presents an analysis of comparison of P-type fire detection system with fuzzy logic-applied fire detection system. The fuzzy logic-applied fire detection system has input variables obtained by fire experiment of small scale with K-type temperature sensor and optical smoke sensor. And the antecedent part of fuzzy rules consists of temperature and smoke density, and the consequent part consists of fire probability. Also triangular fuzzy membership function is used for input variables and fuzzy rules. To calculate the final fire probability a centroid method is introduced. A fire experiment is conducted with controlling wood crib layer, cigarette to simulate actual fire and false alarm situation. The results show that peak fire probability is 25[%] for non-fire and is more than 80[%] for fire situation, respectively. The fuzzy logic-applied fire detection system suggested here is able to distinguish fire situation and non-fire situation very precisely.

  • This is a basic research on potential application of fire detection by measuring fire detection tendency of indoor air quality measurement factors. In this study, operation experiment using smoke detector sensitivity tester and paper fire experiment specified in UL 268 standards were conducted to evaluate the fire detection tendency of indoor air quality measurement factors. Based on the cross-substitution of values measured in the paper fire experiment, PM10 (excluding average) and HCHO (excluding average and maximum) for the indoor air quality meter (IAQ); PM1.0, PM2.5, and PM10 for IAQ S2; and CO (excluding the average and maximum) for combustion gas analyzers showed consistent tendency despite changes in the measured values for smoke generation under all experimental conditions. In particular, PM10 and CO are considered the most applicable fire detection factors among the factors measured in the experiment.

  • In this forest fire experiment the ThermoViewer was set up on the platform built on a tree and observed the temperature change, before, during and after the fire. The fire experiment had been carried out not only the day of the forest fire experiment but also continued for four months after the forest fire had been gone. The results from the experiment showed that the temperature difference is significant in the afternoon; therefore, afternoon satellite passing is better and suitable time for active forest fires and burnt scars detection; moreover, after 83 days, the burnt and un-burnt vegetation become almost the same condition, fully regenerated and the temperature difference become nearly 0$^{\circ}$ Celsius, so there is not enough temperature different between burnt and un-burnt vegetation for current sensors to distinguish the difference anymore.

  • This study evaluated the fire detection performance of an automatic fire extinguishing system for road tunnels, which combines flame wavelength detection technology with flame image detection technology. This fusion technique to improve the fire detection capability can reduce the damage caused by the fire suppression by locating the fire source in the fire and discharging the pressurized water only at the fire source. Experiments were conducted to determine the position of a fire source when a $70cm{\times}70cm$ target was placed at a distance of 15 m, 20 m, 25 m, 30 m, and 35 m, respectively, in a situation where there is a flame and smoke in a tunnel. The performance of the ultraviolet and triple wavelength infrared (IR3) sensors was attenuated due to the interference of thick smoke. In addition when the flame was blocked by thick smoke, the image sensor sensed the smoke and emitted a fire signal.

  • Recently, fire monitoring application systems have been an active research area due to the safety of industries, historical monuments and so on. The fire monitoring application systems can reduce the damage of properties by providing earlier warning for possible fire situation. However, the existing systems have a drawback that they detect fire with delay due to their uniform epoch in fire detection algorithm. Moreover, they do not provide user-friendly graphical user interfaces in their fire monitoring systems. To resolve the problems, First, we propose a new fire detection algorithm (Early Fire Detection Fire Algorithm) which uses the distribution of sensing data for early fire detection. Our fire detection algorithm is better in terms of fire detection time than the existing work because it can set a start time of fire detection epoch dynamically based on data distribution. Second, we develop a fire monitoring application system which provides users with both a user-friendly graphical user interface and a fire alarm message when fire occurs. Finally, we show from our experiment that our developed system is effectively used for early fire warning in a variety of fire situations.

  • Modern society shows rapid growth that is different from that of the development of existing technologies. The development of these technologies has led to the tendency of buildings to become dense, large and advancing. Regarding fire hazards, the possibility of large-scale fires causing fatal damage, due to the rapid spread of fire, increases. Therefore, for this reason, fire defense, i.e. detection and fire extinguishing facilities, in buildings are essential and well applied. But there are always limitations to that. Based on this reason, we would like to suggest the introduction of a new concept of a fire safety system. The method presented here is not only to use a single system for fire detection and fire extinguishing systems but to jointly use it in the environment and energy management fields within the building. However, an important step is required before introducing a system of these technologies. The fire extinguishing method proposed by this system is a method of extinguishing by blocking oxygen flowing into the space where the fire occurred. However, a sufficient basis is needed for this system to be applied in practice. Therefore, in this study, we intend to conduct a preliminary experiment to introduce the new concept of fire detection and extinguishing. The experiment used ethanol with a relatively simple combustion reaction and a high possibility of complete combustion. As a result, it was confirmed how the internal values changed during a fire using ethanol. Resultingly, we obtained the internal oxygen concentration and internal environmental changes according to the initial flame size. Lastly, the data accumulated in this study can be used as data for application in an automatic fire extinguishing system.

  • This paper presents a study on the analysis of fire detection system using fuzzy logic with input variables of temperature and smoke density. The input variables for the fuzzy logic algorithm are measured by fire experiment of small scale with temperature detector and smoke detector. The antecedent part of fuzzy rules consists of temperature and smoke density, and the consequent part consists of fire possibility. Also the triangular fuzzy membership function is chosen for input variables and fuzzy rules to simplify computation. In order to calculate fuzzy values of such fuzzy system, a computer program is developed with Matlab based on graphics user interface. The experiment was conducted with paper and ethanol to simulate flaming fire and with plastic and sawdust to model smoldering fire. The results showed that the fire detection system presented here was able to diagnose fire very precisely. With the help of algorithms using fuzzy logic we could distinguish whether fire or not.

  • In this study, we conducted a low temperature operating test and miniature tunnel model test to study the fire detection capability and properties of an early fire detection system using an optical sensor linear detector that can be installed in harsh environments such as tunnel or utility-pipe conduits which are becoming the major and national infrastructure facilities. The test showed that the optical sensor linear detector was the only one functioned properly among five thermal detectors installed at a low temperature of $-20^{\circ}C$ for 5 days. To study were analyzed adaptability of optical sensor linear detector in the windy tunnel, the operating properties of the optical sensor linear detector when the wind velocity was varied between 0 m/s and 1 m/s in a miniature tunnel model. The temperature change was high when the wind velocity was 0 m/s.

  • To avoid the large scale of damage when fire occurs in the tunnel, it is necessary to have a system to minimize the damage, and early discovery of the problem. In this paper, we have proposed algorithm using the image processing, which is the high-speed detection for the occurrence of fire or smoke in the tunnel. The fire detection is different to the forest fire detection as there are elements such as car and tunnel lightings and other variety of elements different from the forest environment. Therefore, an indigenous algorithm should be developed. The two algorithms proposed in this paper, are able to complement with each other and also they can detect the exact position, at the earlier stay of detection. In addition, by comparing properties of each algorithm throughout this experiment, we have proved the propriety of algorithm.
