Heat release rate used to characterize the fire is an important factor for determining the fire size, the fire growth and the time for suppression and evacuation. The purpose of present work is to review theoretical backgrounds and to introduce equations for estimation of heat release rate with oxygen consumption method in fires. Our work also shows the experimental results of applications for liquid fuels. The oxygen concentration is measured by the analyzer of paramagnetic type. The analyzers of Infra-Red type are used to measure the concentrations of $CO_2$ and CO gas. Time delays of analyzers are ignored.
This study is analyze the damage of warehouse fire accident be made through the fire characteristic database of combustibles and real scale fire test of warehouse mock-up. Combustibles fire tests are carried out for database using RCT (Room Corner Tester) to predict fire growth the goods. A mockup ($3m{\times}3m{\times}2.4m$) of clothes warehouse was built and real scale fire test by LSC (Large Scale Calorimeter) base on the fire characteristic DB. The mock-up of clothes warehouse is made of two type sandwich panels (Glass wool, EPS foam sandwich panel). As a mock-up test result, test 1 (Glass wool sandwich panel) and test 2 (EPS foam sandwich panel) indicating fire growth such as 5 MW, 11 MW of maximum HRR (Heat Release Rate).
In a closed-compartment with various configurations, the correlation that can predict the maximum heat release rate (HRR) with the changes in internal volume and fire growth rate was investigated numerically. The volume of the compartment was controlled by varying the length ratio based on the bottom surface shape of the ISO 9705 fire room, where the ceiling height was fixed to 2.4 m. As a main result, the effect of a change in ceiling height on the maximum HRR was examined by a comparison with a previous study that considered the change in ceiling height. In addition, a more generalized correlation equation was proposed that could predict the maximum HRR in closed-compartments regardless of the changes in ceiling height. This correlation had an average error of 7% and a maximum error of 19% for various fire growth rates when compared with the numerical results. Finally, the applicability of the proposed correlation to representative fire compartments applied to the domestic performance-based design (PBD) was examined. These results are expected to provide useful information on predicting the maximum HRR caused by flashover in closed-compartments as well as the input information required in a fire simulation.

Background: In Ghana, fire incidents have become a regular occurrence, with thousands of lives and millions of dollars lost every year. Hardly a day passes without news of a fire outbreak in some part of Ghana, causing fear and panic among the people. This generates much discussion centering on rumors relating to politics, sabotage, misfortune, religious differences, etc. This article seeks to discuss the trend of fire incidents occurring in Ghana from 2000 to 2013 and the different ways to prevent these incidents. Methods: The pattern of fire incidence in Ghana as a whole as well as in each region is discussed. The study took into consideration the causes, mechanisms, as well as preventive measures against the fire menace. Data were obtained from the head office of Ghana's national fire service. Results: It was noticed that in general the rate of fire incidence increased each year. This increase was attributed to several factors: rate of population growth and industrialization, unstable electricity, urbanization, negligence, illegal electrical connection, etc. The cause of fire was categorized into domestic, industrial, vehicular, institutional, electrical, commercial, bush, and others. Among these causes, domestic fire accounted for 41% of the total number of fire incidents in the country. Conclusion: Finally, this study presents several recommendations to help prevent and mitigate fire incidents in Ghana.

Advantages of the deeply underground subway are underground space efficiency, high speed, decrease of noise and vibration. However, when fire occurs in the deeply underground subway station, large casualties are occurred like Daegu subway station fire due to the increase of evacuation distance. In this study, a numerical analysis was performed by using the fire and evacuation analysis program FDS+EVAC for smoke movement and evacuation in Beotigogae station among the deeply underground subway station. Heat release rate of carriage fire was set 10MW and the fire growth rate was ultrafast. As a result, the smoke move to the exit at 1085 second. The total evacuation time took 956 second.
In this study, the heat release rate of pipe insulation is analyzed by considering the installation status in accordance with the standards ISO 20632 and NFPA 274. The flame retardation rate was evaluated for six types of test samples: polyethylene foam covered with beaten silver (PE(S)), PE foam tapped (PE(N)), elastomeric closed cell thermal insulation (rubber), Japanese PE foam (PE(J)), Japanese polyurethane foam (PU(J)), and Japanese styro form (ST(J)) by EN 13501-1 and fire growth curve. The results show that PU(J), PE(J), and PE(N) were Class E and ultra-fast, NFPA 274 test standards for Class D and Fast, and PE(S) by ISO 20632 were Class C and Slow, and Rubber and ST(J) were Classes and Low. However, the changes in the time-averaged maximum heat release rate for each test standard (ISO 20632 and NFPA 274) to evaluate the flame retardation rate differed among identical materials. This means that the fundamental study is necessary to analyze the more accurate reasons.
As performance-based design (PBD) has a direct impact on evacuation safety assessments, designing fire scenarios based on real fire tests is essential. To improve the reliability of the PBD for fire safety in multiplexes, information on fire behavior, such as heat release rate (HRR) and fire spread rate, are provided in this study by conducting a standard fabric flammability test. To this end, several chairs were arranged in a pattern that resembled a theater-style seating. The peak HRR and heating value per unit mass for each chair ranged from 415 kW to 988 kW and 15.2 MJ/kg to 23.8 MJ/kg, respectively. The heating values per unit mass of the new and old chairs were 23.6 MJ/kg and 16.7 MJ/kg, respectively. As the quantity of plastic and cushioning materials in the new chairs was more than that of the old ones, the new chairs were more vulnerable to fire hazards. Furthermore, when the chairs were arranged in a line, the fire spread rate was observed to be 0.39-0.42 m/min, regardless of the ignition location. Finally, a fire growth curve showing the peak HRR and fire spread rate was also demonstrated.
The applicability of plate thermometer (PT), which feature simple installation and low cost, was experimentally examined in steady and unsteady-state fire conditions. An infrared radiation heater and a square burner with C3H8 as fuel were used as heat sources. The relative measurement accuracy of the PT was evaluated by comparing measurements made using a Gardon-type heat flux meter. From a practical point of view and in terms of measurement accuracy, the optimal size and thickness of the PT in steady and unsteady-state fire conditions were 100 mm and 0.6 mm, respectively. These results can be explained by the conductive heat losses and thermal inertia of the PT for different sizes and thicknesses. It can be also concluded that measurements of heat flux using the PT in conditions of faster fire growth rate than slow require considerable attention.

Apple (Malus×domestica Borkh.; Rosaceae) is an important fruit crop grown mainly in temperate regions of the world. Tissue culture in vitro is a biotechnological technique that has been used to genetically improve cultivars (scions) and rootstocks. This could be important in the production of genetically uniform scions and rootstocks for commercial apple production. In nurseries, apple plants are produced by grafting scions onto rootstocks. The Cornell-Geneva (Geneva® series) breeding program has bred several dwarf rootstocks that are resistant to diseases and pests and are also cold hardy. This study was conducted to determine the optimal medium strength to improve sprouting shoot rate of apical meristem of the apple rootstocks of fire blight resistance. The apple rootstocks apical meristem at size (0.2 mm to 0.3 mm) with axillary buds were cultured on the MS(Murashige & Skoog) medium supplemented with plant growth regulators. The sprouting ratio and growth characteristics was evaluated after eight weeks in vitro culture. The highest rate of bud differentiation and shoot formation were 23.8% and 55.6%, respectively. After 6 weeks, shoots were regenerated from apical meristem, and their growth characteristics was significantly varied on the respective basal medium with different plant growth regulators. Our studies showed that the apple rootstocks the apple rootstocks of fire blight resistance plantlets could be successfully produced from apical meristem differentiated out of young twigs via organogenic regeneration.
To confirm the previous finding that FDS predicts a fire growth rate too rapid compared with an experiment in a center fire in a room with an opening, the same computational fluid dynamics was applied to two types of fires, wall fire and comer fire. First the grid size was chosen to eliminate possible numerical errors due to a coarse grid system. Then the two types of fires were simulated for three different fire sizes, 7.65, 21.25, and 51.57kW for each type, which are the same as in the experiment to be compared with. The fires were predicted to grow too fist although the average temperatures and heights of the neutral planes were in good agreement with measurement.
