  • The objective of this study was to create intelligent rail robots that are optimized for facility management and implement digital twin systems for smart road tunnel management. An autonomous surveillance system is formed by combining the sensing platform consisting of railing robots, fixed cameras and environmental detection sensors with the digital twin data platform technology for tunnel monitoring and early fire suppression. In order to develop mobile rail robots for fire extinguishing, we also designed and manufactured robots for extinguishing & monitoring and fire extinguishing devices, and then we examined the optimization of all parts. Our next step was to build a digital twin for road tunnel management by developing continuous image display system and implementing 3D modeling. After constructing prototypes, we attempted simulations by configuring abnormal symptom scenarios, such as vehicles fires. This study's proposal proposes high-accuracy risk prediction services that will enable intelligent management of risks in the tunnel with early response at each stage, using the data collected from the intelligent rail robots and digital twin systems.

  • This study was conducted to verify the role of forest roads in the extinction of large forest fires in Korea. The study area was the forest fire-damaged area of Gangneung City, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, in April 2023, which is one of the areas with the highest road density among the major forest fires that have occurred so far. The scope of the forest fire damage area was confirmed through on-site survey, and the intensity of the fire was carried out through Sentinel-2 satellite imagery analysis. After that, the relationship between the damage range and intensity and the forest road was examined. About 59.6 km of roads were built within 50 m from the boundary of the forest fire damage area, which can easily access the entire 149.1 ha of forest fire damaged area. The road density is as high as 168.9 m/ha. All forests that were fragmented by roads were fragmented into 83 places, and all of these forests could be judged to have spread by spotting fire. As a result of analyzing the distribution of damage intensity by distance from the road to see the extent of damage according to the ease of access of fire extinguishing vehicles, it was confirmed that the proportion of areas with low-intensity damage has increased sharply even from 75 m or more away from the road. The results of analyzing the distribution of damage intensity by altitude to see the extent of damage according to the ease of access of fire extinguishing showed that the proportion of areas with low-intensity damage increased as the altitude increased, while the proportion of areas with damage of more than strong intensity decreased as the altitude increased. It was confirmed that there is no data that roads inside or adjacent to forests in the forest fire area of Gangneung City are effective in extinguishing forest fires. These results are contrary to the logic that increasing the road density in forests is effective in extinguishing forest fires. In the case of this fire area in Gangneung City, the road density is 43 times higher than the current road density in Korea claimed by the Korea Forest Service of 3.9 m/ha. This study suggests that roads can be a hindrance to extinguishing forest fires.

  • An experimental study has been carried out to determine the flow rate for a feasible N2 generator to extinguish the fire, and this study analogized the correlations to determine the flow rate for $N_2$ generator considered an Oxygen concentration, protected enclosure, discharging pressure and discharging time. We manufactured simple protected enclosure for analyzing fire-extinguishing performance of the $N_2$ generator. As a $N_2$ gas is exhausted on protected enclosure, a various of Oxygen concentration is measured to analyze fire-extinguishing performance experimentally. The correlations determined as an uncertainty analysis for the Oxygen concentration deviations of the theoretical and experimental value. The analogized correlations is Q = (21 $\times$ V)/($O_2+{\zeta}{\cdot}P$)-V. In case of $300m^3$ protected enclosure, 0.8 MPa discharging pressure and $40m^3$/min $N_2$ flow rate, the Oxygen concentration is decreased below 15% within 3 minutes.

  • To effectively deal with the fire in tunnel which is mostly the vehicle fire, it's more important to suppress the fire at early stage. In urban tunnel, however, accessibility to the scene of fire by the fire fighter is very limited due to severe traffic congestion which causes the difficulty with firefighting activity in timely manner and such a problem would be further worsened in underground road (double-deck tunnel) which has been increasingly extended and deepened. In preparation for the disaster in Korea, the range of life safety facilities for installation is defined based on category of the extension and fire protection referring to risk hazard index which is determined depending on tunnel length and conditions, and particularly to directly deal with the tunnel fire, fire extinguisher, indoor hydrant and sprinkler are designated as the mandatory facilities depending on category. But such fire extinguishing installations are found inappropriate functionally and technically and thus the measure to improve the system needs to be taken. Particularly in a double-deck tunnel which accommodates the traffic in both directions within a single tunnel of which section is divided by intermediate slab, the facility or the system which functions more rapidly and effectively is more than important. This study, thus, is intended to supplement the problems with existing tunnel life safety system (fire extinguishing) and develop the remote-controlled automatic fire extinguishing system which is optimized for a double-deck tunnel. Consequently, the system considering low floor height and extended length as well as indoor hydrant for a wide range of use have been developed together with the performance verification and the process for commercialization before applying to the tunnel is underway now.

  • A study of the utilization of inert gas generator(IGG) that generates a large amount of inert gas for the fire extinguishing equipment was performed. In this study, the fire extinction performance of gas generated from a 1GG which is implemented to a gas turbine was investigated. A simulated mixture gas of which composition is the same as that of the gas generated from ICG was used in all experiments. First, the extinction concentration was measured using a cup burner method. The extinction design concentration and the volume of extinction space was calculated by applying the obtained extinction concentration to a method recommended by NFPA 2001. In practical respects, the fire extinction performance of IGG-generated gas was confirmed through the fire suppression experiment within a $2m\times2m\times2m$ room.

  • Full-scale fire extinguishment tests were conducted to develop loaded stream fire extinguishing systems for protecting underground transmission cables. The dimension of test mock-up was 5.5m height${\times}3m$ width ${\times}6m$ length, and six 154kV OF cables were piled up. Gasoline was used to ignite cates. Linear heat detection cables were installed on top of 154 kV OF cable and discharge nozzles were installed on the top and sidewalls, respectively. As a result, both surface fires and deap-seated fires were extinguished successfully within the specified 3 minutes by discharging loaded stream agent.
