  • Falling film heat transfer analyses with aqueous lithium bromide solution were peformed to investigate the transfer characteristics of the copper tubes. Finned(knurled) tube and a smooth tube were selected as test specimens. Averaged generation fluxes of water and the heat transfer performances(heat flux, heat transfer coefficient) were obtained. The results of this work were compared with the data reported previously. As the film flow rate of the solution increased, the generation fluxes of water decreased for both tubes. The reason is estimated by the fact that the heat transfer resistance with the film thickness increased as the film flow rate increased. The effect of the enlarged surface area at the knurled tube was supposed to be dominant at a small flow rate. The generation fluxes of water increased with the increasing degree of tube wall superheat. Nucleate boiling is supposed to occur at a wall superheat of 20 K for a smooth tube, and at 10 K for a knurled tube. The heat transfer performance of the falling film was superior to pool boiling at a low wall superheat below 10 K for both tubes tested. The knurled tube geometry showed good performance than the smooth tube, and the increased performance was mainly came from the effect of the increased heating surface area.

  • Heat transfer performance of integral-fin tube which is used in recipro turbo refrigerator or high compact heat exchangers is studied. Eight tubes with trapezoidal shaped integral-fins having fin densities from 748 to 1654 fpm and 10, 30 internal grooves are tested. A plain tube having the same(inner and outer) diameter as the fin tubes is also tested for comparison. Pool boiling heat transfer of R-11 is investigated experimentally and theoretically on single tube arrangement. The refrigerant evaporates at saturation state of 1 bar on the outside tube surface and heat is supplied by not water which circulates inside of the tube. From the result of eight fin tubes and one plain tube tested, a tube having 1299 fpm-30 grooves shows the best performance. A maximum overall heat transfer coefficient of this tube is about 4000 $W/m^{2}K$ at 2.8m/s of water velocity. The maximum heat transfer enhancement (i.e., the ratio of overall heat transfer coefficients of finned to plain tubes)is about 2.1.

  • The water-to-air heat pump system requires relatively lower energy consumption and less installation space. The heat exchangers used for this system are the finned-tube type for the indoor unit and the double-tube type for the outdoor unit. Mathematical models for this system are developed and programmed in computer. Experimental data from various conditions are obtained and compared with calculated values from the computer simulation program. Differences of cooling capacity and COP are 1.25% and 0.47%, and those of heating capacity and COP are 0.51% and 0.13%, respectively. Simulation results are in good agreement with test results. Therefore, the developed program is effectively used for the design and the performance prediction of water-to-air heat pump system.

  • Laminar heat transfer experiments were conducted in flat extruded aluminum tubes. Three different flat tubes-two with smooth inner channel, one with micro-finned inner channel-were tested. Smooth tube data were in reasonable agreement with the predictions by simplified theoretical models. The heat transfer coefficients of the micro-fin tube were significantly smaller than those of the smooth tube. The reason was attributed to the decelerating flow in the inter-fin region. Heat transfer correlations were developed from the data.

  • In this experimental study, for obtaining the data to be used in the increased recover rate of waste heat from the recirculated sand, the furan foundry sand were used as the fluidized particle in the fluidized bed in which the smooth, spiral and finned tubes($Do={\varphi}12.7$) were horizontally installed and used as the heat-transfer tubes. The heat transfer experiments were performed in the conditions of water Reynolds number of inside tubes in the range of 4,000 to 18,000 and particle Reynolds number of outside tube in the range of 0.8 to 7.5. The heat-transfer coefficients(ho) increase as the higher inside temperature of the fluidized bed and the maximum heat-transfer coefficients can be obtained in the range of 3.5 to 5.5 of particle Reynolds number in the all tubes. The maximum Nu numbers of smooth, spiral and finned tubes are figured as about 1:1.5:3 in order even if the ratios show little different as the temperatures of bed.

Nine tubes with trapezoidal integral-fins having fin densities from 748 to 1654fpm and 10,30 grooves and finned tubes with caves of 0.55 and 0.64 mm height respectively are tested. in case of condensation CFC-11 condensates at saturation stat of 32$^{\circ}C$ on the outside surface cooled by inside cooling water flows. And in case of boiling the refrigerant evaporates at a saturation state of 1 bar on the outside tube surface and heat is supplied by hot water which circulates inside of the tube,. • Effectiveness of a 3-pass plate finned-tube heat exchanger is calculated using heat exchangelet method by changing the shape of fin and the arrangement of tubes. The alternative refrigerant R134a is taken in this study. Conduction between neighboring tubes along the fin is taken into account in addition to convection between the fin and the surrounding air. Governing equations are obtained by using energy balance in a small control volume containing a tube and fins. They are numerically solved following the tube. Effect of tube-to-tube conduction is investigated in single-phase and two-phase flows with various fin shapes and arrangements of tubes. Improvement of effectiveness by fin perforation is studied too. The results shows that perforating fins, increasing the number of tubes, and increasing the distance between neighboring tubes at the same fin area enhance the effectiveness.

  • Low-fin tubes are widely used to enhance condensation heat transfer. In this study, condensation heat transfer experiment was conducted on the low-fin tube using R-11. Three different fin densities-787 fpm (fins per meter), 1102 fpm. 1378 fpm-were tested. The results show that low-fin tube enhances the condensation heat transfer considerablely. The enhancement increases as the fin density increases. It was also found that the fin shape and height have a significant effect on the condensation heat transfer coefficient. Slender or high fins showed a higher condensing heat transfer coefficient compared with fat, low fins. For the tube with 1378 fpm, however, excessive fin height decreased the condensing heat transfer coefficient. The reason may be attributed to the increasing condensate retention angle as the fin density increases. The experimental data are compared with existing prediction models. Results show that Webb's surface tension model predicted the data best (within ${\pm}20%$), which confirms that surface tension plays the major role in low-fin tube condensation.
