An experimental and numerical investigation on fatigue of composite and metal aircraft structures

  • The static strength and fatigue crack resistance of the aircraft skin structures depend on the materials used and joint type. Most of the commercial aircraft's skin panel structures are made from aluminium alloy and carbon fibre reinforced epoxy. In this study, the fatigue resistance of four joint configurations (metal/metal, metal/composite, composite/composite and composite/metal) with riveted, adhesive bonded, and hybrid joining techniques are investigated with experiments and finite element analysis. The fatigue tests were tension-tension because of the typical nature of the loads on aircraft skin panels susceptible of experimenting fatigue. Experiment results suggest that the fatigue life of hybrid joints is superior to adhesive bonded joints, and these in turn much better than conventional riveted joints. Thanks to the fact that, for hybrid joints, the adhesive bond provides better load distribution and ensures load-carrying capacity in the event of premature adhesive failure while rivets induce compressive residual stresses in the joint. Results from FE tool ABAQUS analysis for adhesive bonded and hybrid joints agrees with the experiments. From the analysis, the energy release rate for adhesive bonded joints is higher than that of hybrid joints in both opening (mode I) and shear direction (mode II). Most joints show higher energy release rate in mode II. This indicates that the joints experience fatigue crack in the shear direction, which is responsible for crack opening.

EFFECT OF RESIDUAL STRESS BY SHOT PEENING ON FATIGUE STRENGTH OF LCV LEAF SPRING

  • Spring is one of major suspension part of the light commercial vehicle (LCV). In the manufacturing process it is shot-peened to improve its fatigue strength. In this paper, residual stresses by shot peening were calculated through finite element analysis, and the effects of these residual stresses on fatigue strength of leaf spring were evaluated. Fatigue tests were performed with two kinds of specimens; one is actual leaf spring assembly, and the other is simulated 3-point bending specimen. Fatigue tests were performed under the loading condition that was measured on the proving ground. From the results, the maximum load-fatigue life relation of leaf spring was defined, and test results of 3 point bending specimen are in good agreement with those of leaf spring assembly. The effects of residual stresses by shot peening on fatigue strength of leaf spring is not large in the high load range, however, in the low load range, its effects were not negligible.

고강도강 맞대기 용접 시험편의 루트갭 변경에 따른 피로강도 평가 (Fatigue Assessment of High Strength Steel with Butt Welded Joints for the Root Gap Difference)

  • In this study, a series of fatigue tests was conducted to evaluate fatigue strength for the root gap difference with high strength steel with butt welded joints. A finite element analysis using effective notch stress method was also performed to compare effective notch factors each other with butt welded specimens made by copper backing. The results of fatigue tests were classified according to the root gap difference. Fatigue life of butt welded specimens is presented for determining the root gap of high strength steel with butt welded joints in terms of fatigue strength. Then effective notch stress was applied to interpret fatigue strength of butt welded specimen model which is reflected actual measured dimensions. As a result, fatigue strength of high strength steel with butt welded specimens is increased by root gap gets longer in length.

블완전용입 맞대기 용접재의 용입깊이에 따른 피로강도특성 및 잔류수명의 산출 (Investigation of Fatigue Strength and Prediction of Remaining Life in the Butt Welds Containing Penetration Defects)

  • 본 연구에서는 기존의 강교에서 흔하게 발견되고 있는 맞대기 용접부의 용입불량으로 인한 부재의 피로강도 저하도를 정량적으로 평가하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 강교량의 재료로 널리 사용되고 있는 SWS490강으로 제작된 완전용입 및 용입깊이가 서로 다른 불완전용입 맞대기 용접시험편을 대상으로 일정진폭하중시험을 수행하여 S-N선도를 산출하고 이를 비교 검토하였으며, 파괴역학적 방법을 이용하여 불완전용입 용접재의 피로수명을 계산하였다. 본 연구의 결과로서, 완전용입 용접재의 경우 AASHTO의 피로강도등급선도와의 비교에서 피로한도값은 A등급보다 높은 값을 보였고, S-N선도의 기울기는 5.57로 매우 높게 나타났다. 불완전용입 용접재의 경우 불완전용입깊이 D가 증가함에 따라 피로강도가 감소하는데, D=14.7mm인 경우 AASHTO의 E'등급보다 낮게 나타난다. 불완전용입 용접재의 파손거동에서 피로균열은 내부 용접루트 선단부에서 a/c가 매우 작은 반타원형 표면균열의 형태로 발생하고, 시험체의 두께방향으로 진전하여 최종파손을 유발한다. 파괴역학적 방법을 이용한 불완전용입 용접재의 피로수명을 평가하기 위하여 3차원 반타원형 균열형상에 대한 응력확대계수 K를 유한요소해석으로 구하였다. 여기서 얻어진 K값과 실험으로 얻어진 Paris식의 상수를 이용하여 불완전용입 용접재의 피로수명을 계산하여 비교하였다. 그리고 실제 불완전용입 맞대기용접부의 파손으로 붕괴사고가 발생한 성수대교의 수직재에 본 연구결과를 적용하여 피로수명을 계산해 보았다.

  • 점용접은 자동차 산업에서 차체 구조물의 대표적 접합방법으로서 차량에 피로하중이 작용할 경우 구조물 전체의 파손 발생이전에 점용접부 일부에 조기 피로파손의 발생가능성이 존재한다. 이러한 점용접부의 국부적 파손은 차량 구조물의 동적 반응 및 이에 따른 피로거동의 변화를 야기할 가능성이 존재한다. 따라서 차량과 같이 스펙트럼하중을 받는 구조물의 피로수명 평가를 위해서는 이러한 점용접부의 국부적 파손에 의한 동적 반응의 변화를 고려하여야 한다. 본 논문에서는 점용접부의 누적피로손상으로 인한 동적반응의 변화를 고려한 진동피로해석을 수행하였다. 이에 필요한 S-N 선도는 전단 점용접 시험편에 대한 일정진폭 피로시험을 통하여 획득하였다. 또한 스펙트럼하중하의 점용접부의 피로수명은 유한요소해석에 기반한 진동피로해석을 통하여 평가하였다.

수치해석을 이용한 Mark-III LNG 1차 방벽에 대한 피로 평가 (A numerical study on the fatigue evaluation of mark-III LNG primary barrier)

  • 환경 문제로 인해 기존 연료를 대체하는 천연가스의 수요가 증가하고 있다. 이에 따라, 액화천연가스 운반선의 화물창이 거대화되면서 화물창 내의 슬로싱 하중이 증가하게 된다. 액화천연가스 화물창의 종류 중 하나인 Mark-III 타입의 1차 방벽은 액화천연가스와 직접적으로 접촉하고 있으며 슬로싱 하중 및 액화천연가스의 자중을 받는다. 슬로싱 하중에 의해 다양한 범위의 하중이 1차 방벽에 지속적으로 작용하며 이로 인해 피로 파괴를 유발할 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 Mark-III 타입의 1차 방벽을 포함한 단열시스템을 유한요소 모델로 구성하였으며 1차 방벽에 대해 피로수명을 평가하여 피로 특성을 확인하였다. 수치해석을 통해 주응력 범위 및 최대 주응력이 발생하는 위치를 계산하였으며 이를 통해 1차 방벽의 피로수명을 수치적으로 평가하였다. 또한, 다양한 단열시스템 타입에 대해 모델링을 실시하였으며, 피로수명 평가 결과를 통해 1차 방벽의 피로 파괴 안전성을 확보하는 최적의 단열시스템에 대해 제안하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 Mark-III 타입 1차 방벽의 피로 기반 설계에 있어 활용가치가 있을 것으로 판단된다.

혼합모드 하중에서의 STS304의 피로균열 전과거동 (Fatigue Crack Propagation Behavior in STS304 under Mixed Mode Loading)

  • The use of fracture mechanics has traditionally concentrated on crack growth under an opening mechanism. However, many service failure occur from cracks subjected to mixed mode loadings. Hence, it is necessary to evaluate the fatigue behavior under mixed mode loading. Under mixed mode loading conditions, not only the fatigue crack propagation rate is of importance, but also the crack propagation direction. The mode I and II stress intensity factors of CTS specimen were calculated using elastic finite element method. The propagation behavior of the fatigue crack of the STS304 steeds under mixed mode loading condition was evacuated by using stress intensity factors $K_I$ and $K_II. The MTS criterion and effective stress intensity factor were applied to predict the crack propagation direction and the fatigue crack propagation rate.

  • The brakes are the most important safety-critical accident avoidance components of a motor vehicle. They must perform safely under a variety of operating conditions and must have enough strength not to fail during the life of a vehicle. Recently, anti-lock brake systems are used on more and more passenger cars. The ABS brakes modulate brake line pressure to prevent brakes from locking during braking. In this study, finite element analysis, material test for FCD45, measurement of stress and cumulative fatigue damage analysis were performed to evaluate fatigue damage of the caliper housing under ABS mode.

유한평판 및 필렛 용접부에 있어서 표면균열의 피로 파괴거동에 관한 연구 (A Study on Fatigue Fracture Behaviour of Surface Crack in Finite Plates and Fillet Weldment)

  • Fatigue crack growth from surface defects is one of the most important subjects for the evaluation and the assurance of safety in pressure vessels, piping systems, LPG/LNG fuel tank and other various structures. This paper attempts to analysis some practical or general problems such as the estimation of crack growth life to penetrate the plate thickness, based on fatigue crack growth a single surface flaw and the interaction of multiple flaws. An experiment on the coalescence of multiple undercuts was carried out under cyclic tension condition as a attempt to the analysis of multiple crack problems. It is noted that the fracture strength is characterized by the analogy to that in a single crack growth.

  • At present, CHS(Compression Hip Screw) is one of the best prosthesis for the intertrochanteric fracture. There is nothing to evaluate the CHS itself with the finite element analysis and mechanical tests. They have same ways of the experimental test of the ASTM standards. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the existing CHS and the new CHS which have transformational design factors with finite element analysis and mechanical tests. The mechanical tests are divided into compression tests and fatigue test for evaluating the failure load, strength and fatigue life. This finite element method is same as the experimental test of the ASTM standards. Under 300N of compression load at the lag screw head. There are less differences between Group (5H, basic type) and Group which has 8 screw holes. However, there are lots of big differences between Group and Group which is reinforced about thickness of the neck range. Moreover, the comparison of Group and Group shows similar tendency of the comparison of Group and Group . The Group is reinforced the neck range from Group. After the experimental tests and the finite element analysis, the most effective design factor of the compression hip screws is the reinforcement of the thickness, even though, there are lots of design factors. Moreover, to unite the lag screw with the plate and to analyze by static analysis, the result of this method can be used with experimental test or instead of it.
