Even though there are many analysis methods of circular tanks on elastic foundation, the finite element method is widely used for that purpose. But the finite element method requires a number of memory spaces, computation time to solve large stiffness equations. In this study many the simplified methods(Analogy of Beam on Elastic Foundation, Foundation Stiffness Matrix, Finite Element Method and Transfer Matrix Method) are applied to analyze a circular tank on elastic foundation. By the given analysis methods, BEF analogy and foundation matrix method, the circular tank was transformed into the skeletonized frame structure. The frame structure was divided into several finite elements. The stiffness matrix of a finite element is related with the transfer matrix of the element. Thus, the transfer matrix of each finite element utilized the transfer matrix method to simplify the analysis of the tank. There were no significant difference in the results of two methods, the finite element method and the transfer matrix method. The transfer method applied to a circular tank on elastic foundation resulted in four simultaneous equations to solve completely.

The stochastic finite element method(SFEM) based structural optimal design is presented. Random system response including uncertainties for the design variable is calculated with first order perturbation method. A method for calculating the sensitivity coefficients is developed using the equilibrium equation and first-order perturbed equation. Numerical results are presented for a truss, frame and plate structures with displacement and stress constraints. The sensitivity calculation proposed here is compared with finite difference method. A nonlinear programming technique is used to solve the problem. The procedure is easily incorporated with existing deterministic structural optimization.

The dynamic characteristics of a HDD suspension system are investigated by finite element analysis and experimental modal analysis. A finite element model of the suspension Type850 was developed for unloaded case. The calculated vibration modes were compared with measurements and agree well in shape and frequency except some local modes. Local thickness and Young's modulus of the finite element model are updated by modal tuning method to develop the precise FE model. A sensitivity matrix of the natural frequencies for some design variables was calculated using finite difference method. Most natural frequencies calculated by the tuned FE model coincide with the measurements and the errors between them are less than 2%.

It is very important to design the shape of container in HIPing process since the final shape and relative density distribution of the product are decisively dependent on the shape of container. A derivative based approach to determine the shape of container in HIPing process is presented. In this approach the optimal design problem is formulated on the basis of the finite element process. The process model the formulation for process optimal design and the schemes for the evaluation of the design sensitivity and an iterative procedure for optimization are described. In comparison with finite difference scheme the validity of the schemes for the evaluation of the design sensitivity is examined.

This study proposes a two-dimensional hyperbolic soil spring model for mat foundations in clays subjected to vertically uniform loads to simplify the complexity of three-dimensional finite element analysis on mat foundations. The solutions from three-dimensional finite element analysis were examined to determine the hyperbolic model parameters of the soil springs underneath the slab. Utilizing these model parameters, normalized functions across the middle section of the mat were obtained. The solutions from the proposed model, along with the approximate finite difference analysis of the mat in clays under vertical load, were found to be consistent with those from the three-dimensional finite element analysis. The authors conclude that the proposed method can serve as an alternative for the preliminary design of mat foundations.
The purpose of this article is to find a relation between the finite difference method and the boundary element method, and propose a new approach deriving a discrete approximation formula as like that of the finite difference method for harmonic functions. We develop a discrete approximation formula on a uniform grid based on the boundary integral formulations. We consider three different boundary integral formulations and derive one discrete approximation formula on the uniform grid for the harmonic function. We show that the proposed discrete approximation formula has the same computational molecules with that of the finite difference formula for the Laplace operator ${\nabla}^2$.
A viscoelastic finite element analysis is presented to investigate residual stresses occurred in a laminated cylindrical shell during cure. An incremental viscoelastic constitutive equation that can describe stress relaxation during the cure is derived as a recursive formula which can be used conveniently for a numerical analysis. The finite element analysis program is developed on the basis of a 3-D degenerated shell element and the first order shear deformation theory, and is verified by comparing with an one dimensional exact solution. Viscoelastic effect on the residual stresses in the laminated shell during the cure is investigated by performing both the viscoelastic and linear elastic analyses considering thermal deformation and chemical shrinkage simultaneously. The results show that there is big difference between viscoelastic stresses and linear elastic stresses. The effect of cooling rates and cooling paths on the residual stresses is also examined.
The objective of this study was to develop a simple and efficient numerical modeling technique for dynamic crack propagation using the finite element method. The study focused on the analysis of a rapidly propagation crack in an elastic body. As already known, discrete crack tip advance with the stationary node procedure results in spurious oscillation in the calculated energy terms. To reduce the spurious oscillation, a simple and efficient moving node procedure is proposed. The procedure does require neither remeshing the discretization nor distorting the original mesh. Two different central difference schemes are also evaluated and compared for dynamic crack propagation problem.
In this paper, we conducted finite element analysis to investigate the residual stress redistributions of weldment due to cutting. To evaluate the effect of the residual stress on the fatigue behavior of weldment, test specimens are commonly cut from the weldment, but the distributions of the residual stress in the cut specimen should be different from those in the original weldment. Our work is to evaluate the difference between the residual stresses before and after weldment-cutting to understand the effect of cutting on the residual stress. Transient heat analysis, elastic-plastic mechanical analysis and element removal technique are used to simulate the welding and cutting procedures on the commercial finite element code ABAQUS.
A wavelet based approach is proposed for structural damage detection in beams, plate and delamination of composite plates. Wavelet theory is applied here for crack identification of a beam element with a transverse on edge non-propagating open crack. Finite difference method was used for generating a general displacement equation for the cracked beam in the first example. In the second and third example, damage is detected from the deformed shape of a loaded simply supported plate applying the wavelet theory. Delamination in composite plate is identified using wavelet theory in the fourth example. The main concept used is the breaking down of the dynamic signal of a structural response into a series of local basis function called wavelets, so as to detect the special characteristics of the structure by scaling and transformation property of wavelets. In the light of the results obtained, limitations of the proposed method as well as suggestions for future work are presented. Results show great promise of wavelet approach for damage detection and structural health monitoring.
