This paper is concerned with the determination of exact buckling loads and vibration frequencies of variable thickness isotropic plates using well known finite difference technique. The plates are subjected to uni, biaxial compression and shear loadings and various combinations of boundary conditions are considered. The buckling load is found out as the in plane load that makes the determinant of the stiffness matrix equal to zero and the natural frequencies are found out by carrying out eigenvalue analysis of stiffness and mass matrices. New and exact results are given for many cases and the results are in close agreement with the published results. In this paper, like finite element method, finite difference method is applied in a very simple manner and the application of boundary conditions is also automatic.
This study presents investigation of the behavior of moderately thick reinforced concrete slabs having hollow cores with different parameters. The experimental part of this investigation includes testing eight specimens of solid and hollow-core slab models having (2.05 m) length, (0.6 m) width and (25 cm) thickness under two monotonic line loads. Load versus deflection was recorded during test at mid span and under load. Numerically, the finite element method is used to study the behavior of these reinforced concrete slabs by using ANSYS computer program. The specimens of slab models are modeled by using (SOLID65) element to represent concrete slabs and (LINK180) element to represent the steel bars as discrete axial members between concrete nodes. The finite element analysis has showed good agreement with the experimental results with difference of (4.71%-8.68%) in ultimate loads. A parametric study have been carried out by using ANSYS program to investigate the effects of concrete compressive strength, size and shape of core, type of applied load and effect of removing top steel reinforcement.
The solution of anisotropic plate via the classical methods is limited to relatively load and boundary conditions. If these conditions are more complex, the analysis becomes increasingly tedious and even impossible. For many plate problems of considerable practical interest, analytic solutions to the governing differential equations cannot be found. Among the numerical techniques presently available, the finite difference method and the finite element method are powerful numerical methods. The objective of this paper is to compare with each numerical methods for the buckling load and modes of anisotropic composite laminated plates considering shear deformation. In applying numerical methods to solve differential equations of anisotropic plates, this study uses the finite difference method and the finite element method. In determining the eigenvalue by Finite Difference Method, this paper represent good convergence compared with Finite Element Method. Several numerical examples and buckling modes show the effectiveness of various numerical methods and they will give a guides in deciding minimum buckling load and various mode shapes.

Thermal effects are significant loads for assessing concrete dam behaviour during operation. A new methodology to estimate thermal loads on concrete dams taking into account processes which were previously unconsidered, such as: the evaporative cooling, the night radiating cooling or the shades, has been recently reported. The application of this novel approach in combination with a three-dimensional finite element method to solve the heat diffusion equation led to a precise characterization of the thermal field inside the dam. However, that approach may be computationally expensive. This paper proposes the use of a new one-dimensional model based on an explicit finite difference scheme which is improved by means of the reported methodology for computing the heat fluxes through the dam faces. The improved model has been applied to a case study where observations from 21 concrete thermometers and data of climatic variables were available. The results are compared with those from: (a) the original one-dimensional finite difference model, (b) the Stucky-Derron classical one-dimensional analytical solution, and (c) a three-dimensional finite element method. The results of the improved model match well with the observed temperatures, in addition they are similar to those obtained with (c) except in the vicinity of the abutments, although this later is a considerably more complex methodology. The improved model have a better performance than the models (a) and (b), whose results present larger error and bias when compared with the recorded data.

The analysis of electromagnetic forming process consists of the analysis of the electric circuit and the dynamic deformation analysis. The purpose of the electric circuit analysis is to calculate the magnetic pressure and to apply it to the deformation analysis. Some investigators performed the analysis assuming the pressure distribution in longitudinal direction. However there was a difference between the calculated and experimental results. The difference mainly came from the assumption of the pressure distribution. One must know the magnetic field distribution in an actual situation for the analysis to be less erroneous. In this work the electromagnetic field analysis was performed by the finite element method to obtain a more realistic pressure distribution. A better agreement between the calculated and experimental results was obtained. It became possible to predict the deformation behavior of the workpiece of finite length.
Deformation behavior of pure aluminum during equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) was simulated using a three-dimensional version of the finite element method in conjunction with a constitutive model based on the dislocation density and cell evolution. The three-dimensional finite element analyses for the prediction of microstructural features, such as the variation of the dislocation density and the cell size with the number of ECAP, are reported. The calculated stress and strain and their distributions are also investigated for the route Bc ECAP processed pure aluminum. The results of finite element analyses are found to be in good agreement with experimental results for the dislocation cell size. Due to the accumulation of strain throughout the workpiece and an overall trend to saturation in cell size, a decrease of the difference in cell size with the number of passes (1~4) was predicted.
Finite element analysis and welding experiments were performed to evaluate deformation aspect for Flux Cored Arc Welding(FCAW) and Electro Gas Welding(EGW). Numerical researches of FCAW and EGW were performed considering the difference of number of welding pass and welding direction to arc flow. To perform the numerical study of FCAW and EGW, number of welding pass and welding direction to arc flow were considered in the finite element model. FCAW process requires multi pass and its welding direction is vertical to welding torch. On the other hand, EGW process requires single pass and its welding direction is parallel to welding torch. The difference of welding direction and heat input was considered in the finite element analysis. In FCAW process, Goldak's double ellipsoidal heat input model was adopted. In the EGW process, Hemi-spherical power density distribution was adopted. In the results of experiment and finite element analysis, angular deformation of FCAW process is larger than that of EGW process.

In this paper arc behavior in spiral type vacuum interrupter(VI) was analyzed by means of arc images, arc voltages and finite element method(FEM). As a result of experiment, the difference of arc voltage was observed under different twisting angles. It was found that the reason of the difference was the difference of arc resistance from simultaneous analysis of arc images and arc voltages. and the difference of arc resistance was explained by Lorentz force calculation with FEM. And the results of calculation were sufficient to explain the experimental results.

Deep drawing process for rectangular drawn section is different with that for axisymmetric circular one. Therefore deep drawing process for rectangular drawn section requires several intermediate steps to generate the final configuration without any significant defect. In this study, finite element analysis for multi-stage deep drawing process for high precision rectangular cases is carried out especially for an extreme aspect ratio. The analysis is performed using rigid-plastic finite element method with an explicit time integration scheme of the commercial program, LS-DYNA3D. The sheet blank is modeled using eight-node continuum brick elements. The results of analysis show that the irregular contact condition between blank and die affects the occurrence of failure, and the difference of aspect ratio in the drawn section leads to non-uniform metal flow, which may cause failure. A series of experiments for multi-stage deep drawing process for the rectangular cases are conducted, and the deformation configuration and the thickness distribution of the drawn rectangular cases are investigated by comparing with the results of the numerical analysis. The numerical analysis with an explicit time integration scheme shows good agreement with the experimental observation.

The reinforced concrete farm silos on the elastic foundatin are widely used in agricultural engineering because of their superior structural performance, economy and attractive appearance. Various methods for the analysis and design of farm silo, such as the analytical method, the finite difference method, and the finite element methods, can be used. But the analytical procedure can not be applied for the intricate conditions in practice. Therefore lately the finite element method has been become in the structural mechanics. In this paper, a method of finite element analysis for the cylindrical farm silo on ffness matrix for the elastic foundation governed by winkler's assumption. A complete computer programs have been developed in this paper can be applicable not only to the shell structures on elastic foundation but also to the arbitrary three dimensional structures. Assuming the small deflection theory, the membrane and plate bending behaviours of flat plate element can be assumed mutually uncoupled. In this case, the element has 5 degrees of freedom per node when defined in the local coordinate system. However, when the element properties are transformed to the global coordinates for assembly, the 6th degree of freedom should be considered. A problem arises in this procedure the resultant stiffness in the 6th degree of freedom at this node will be zero. But this singularity of the stiffness matrix can be eliminated easily by merely replacing the zero diagonal by dummy stiffness.
