Transient radiative heat transfer is analyzed in a one-dimensional slab using finite volume method (FVM). In this study, the step, $2^{nd}$ order upwind, and QUICK schemes are used for incident diffuse radiation and collimated beam, respectively. The results fer diffuse radiation show that all schemes applied in this study give good agreements with available published results. In case of collimated beam however, the results show deviations from the analytical solutions. To successfully describe the propagations of collimated beam shock capturing schemes such as TVD scheme are need to be developed.

The existing numerical approximations of convection flux, especially the spatial higher-order difference schemes, in unstructured cell-centered finite volume methods are examined in detail with each other and evaluated with respect to the accuracy through their application to a 2-D benchmark problem. Six higher-order schemes are examined, which include two second-order upwind schemes, two central difference schemes and two hybrid schemes. It is found that the 2nd-order upwind scheme by Mathur and Murthy(1997) and the central difference scheme by Demirdzic and Muzaferija(1995) have more accurate prediction performance than the other higher-order schemes used in unstructured cell-centered finite volume methods.
The issue of quench is related to safety operation of large-scale superconducting magnet system fabricated by cable-in-conduit conductor. A numerical method is presented to simulate the thermal hydraulic quench characteristics in the superconducting Tokamak magnet system, One-dimensional fluid dynamic equations for supercritical helium and the equation of heat conduction for the conduit are used to describe the thermal hydraulic characteristics in the cable-in-conduit conductor. The high heat transfer approximation between supercritical helium and superconducting strands is taken into account due to strong heating induced flow of supercritical helium. The fully implicit time integration of upwind scheme for finite volume method is utilized to discretize the equations on the staggered mesh. The scheme of a new adaptive mesh is proposed for the moving boundary problem and the time term is discretized by the-implicit scheme. It remarkably reduces the CPU time by local linearization of coefficient and the compressible storage of the large sparse matrix of discretized equations. The discretized equations are solved by the IMSL. The numerical implement is discussed in detail. The validation of this method is demonstrated by comparison of the numerical results with those of the SARUMAN and the QUENCHER and experimental measurements.
Shock-wave focusing from a two-dimensional parabolic reflector was simulated using an explicit finite volume upwind TVD scheme. Computations were performed for three different incident shock speeds of $M_s$ = 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3, corresponding to the relatively weak, intermediate, and strong shock waves, respectively. Numerical solutions nicely resolved all the waves evolving through the focusing process. As the incident shock strength increase, a transition was observed in the shock-fronts geometry that was caused by the change in the reflection type of converging shock fronts on the axis of symmetry, from regular-type to Mach-type reflection. The computed maximum on-axis pressure amplification and the trajectories of three-wave intersections showed good agreement with experimental results. The strong nonlinear effect near the focal region which determines the shock-fronts geometries at and behind the focus and at the same time confines the pressure amplification at the focus was clearly revealed from the present numerical simulation.
We develop in this work a new well-balanced preserving-positivity path-conservative central-upwind scheme for Saint-Venant-Exner (SVE) model. The SVE system (SVEs) under some considerations, is a nonconservative hyperbolic system of nonlinear partial differential equations. This model is widely used in coastal engineering to simulate the interaction of fluid flow with sediment beds. It is well known that SVEs requires a robust treatment of nonconservative terms. Some efficient numerical schemes have been proposed to overcome the difficulties related to these terms. However, the main drawbacks of these schemes are what follows: (i) Lack of robustness, (ii) Generation of non-physical diffusions, (iii) Presence of instabilities within numerical solutions. This collection of drawbacks weakens the efficiency of most numerical methods proposed in the literature. To overcome these drawbacks a reformulation of the central-upwind scheme for SVEs (CU-SVEs for short) in a path-conservative version is presented in this work. We first develop a finite-volume method of the first order and then extend it to the second order via the averaging essentially non oscillatory (AENO) framework. Our numerical approach is shown to be well-balanced positivity-preserving and shock-capturing. The resulting scheme could be seen as a predictor-corrector method. The accuracy and robustness of the proposed scheme are assessed through a carefully selected suite of tests.
The QUICK scheme for convection terms is modified for unstructured finite volume method by using linear reconstruction technique and validated through the computation of two well defined laminar flows. It uses two upstream grid points and one downstream grid point in approximating the convection terms. The most upstream grid point is generated by considering both the direction of flow and local grid line. Its value is calculated from surrounding grid points by using a linear construction method. Numerical error by the modified QUICK scheme is shown to decrease about 2.5 times faster than first order upwind scheme as grid size decreases. Computations are also carried out to see effects of the skewness and irregularity of grid on numerical solution. All numerical solutions show that the modified QUICK scheme is insensitive to both the skewness and irregularity of grid in terms of the accuracy of solution.
Turbulent flow field in a subchannel of bare rod bundles has been numerically simulated using the control volume based finite element method. Launder & Ying model of Reynolds stress and Lam & Bremhorst low-Reynolds number model are implemented in k-$\varepsilon$ equations and momentum equations. Secondary flows are simulated using the stream function and vorticity approach. The control volume based finite element method enable to use the upwind scheme (donor cell scheme). Sensitivity of the constants in the models are studied, and proper values are found to get the close result to the measured flow distributions.
A well-known pressure correction method, a SIMPLE algorithm, is extended to treat compressible flows. Collocated grids are used and density is linked to pressure via an equation of state. The influence of pressure on density in the case of compressible flows is implicitly incorporated into the extended SIMPLE algorithm. The first-order Upwind and high-order Quick scheme are compared with respect to an accuracy and convergence time at all speeds. The extended method is verified on a number of test cases and the results are compared with other numerical results available in the literature. The calculated results show that the Quick scheme improves accuracy at all speed and also reduces the calculation time at supersonic flows, compared with the Upwind scheme.
