  • The flow around free end of a finite circular cylinder(FC) embedded in an atmospheric boundary layer has been investigated experimentally. The experiments were carried out in a closed-return type subsonic wind tunnel with varying aspect ratio of the finite cylinder mounted vertically on a flat plate. The wake structures behind a 2-D cylinder and a finite cylinder located in a uniform flow were also measured for comparison. Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter was about Re=20,000. A hot-wire anemometer was employed to measure the wake velocity and the mean pressure distributions on the cylinder surface were also measured. The flow past the FC free end shows a complicated three-dimensional wake structure and flow phenomenon is quite different from that of 2-D cylinder. The three-dimensional flow structure was attributed to the downwashing counter rotating vortices separated from the FC free end. As the FC aspect ratio decreases, the vortex shedding frequency is decreased and the vortex formation length is increased compared to that of 2-D cylinder. Due to the descending counter-rotating twin-vortex, in the region near the FC free end, regular vortex shedding from the cylinder is suppressed and the vortex formation region is hardly established. In the wake center region, the mean velocity for the FC located in atmospheric boundary layer has large velocity deficit, compared to that of uniform flow.

  • Flow characteristics of the wake behind a finite circular cylinder(FC) mounted on a flat plate was experimentally investigated. Three finite cylinder models having aspect ratio (length to diameter ratio, L/D) of 6,10 and 13 were tested in this study. Wake velocity was measured by a hot-wire anemometry at Reynolds number of 20,000, and the results were compared with those of two-dimensional circular cylinder. As a result, the free-end effect on the wake structure becomes more dominant with decreasing the aspect ratio(L/D) of the finite cylinder. Invisid flow entrained into the wake region decreases the turbulence intensity and periodicity of the vortex shedding due to existence of the free end. From spectral analysis and cross correlation of the velocity signals, vortices having 24Hz frequency characteristics are found in the down wash flow just behind the free end. There exists very complicated flow near the free end due to interaction between the entrained flow and streamwise vortices. Vortex formation region is destroyed significantly in the near wake and shows quite different wake structures from those of 2-D cylinder.

  • In spite of the widespread use of stiffend plates in ship structures, it is very difficult to analysis these directly. So, in conventional analysis of plate structures, above structures are used to be idealized as orthotropic plate or grillage structures. Lately, the development of large computers, it is able to apply the optimum techniques to structural design. In this paper, the double bottom structure of Bulk Carrier was idealized into flat grillage which is composed of intersecting beam stiffencers primarily loaded mormal to its surface. And strength analysis was carried out by using the finite element method based on displacement. And further, according to variation of floor space and double tobbon heightm, the optimum design was carrid out by using Hooke and Jeeves direct search method.

  • The ㄱ type perfobond rib shear connector is a ㄱ type flat steel plate with a number of holes punched through. This connector can be effectively used in girder with high shear. The ㄱ type perfobond rib shear connector exhibit very stiff behaviour under service load conditions and also had the characteristic of retaining a significant amount of load after the attainment of ultimate capacity. A regression analysis, which is based on a model that takes into account the contributions of concrete dowels formed by the rib holes, the transverse reinforcement, the strength of concrete in front of the rib, and the ㄱ type plate as well as a nonlinear finite element analysis, is used in the derivation. An empirical equation for the design of ㄱ type perfobond rib shear connector is proposed.

  • This paper is studied on the junction stress of the large tank and the cylindrical outlet such as a pressure vessel attached to a pope or nozzle theoretically. It is assumed that the diameter of tank is much larger than that of the nozzle cylinder, so it can be approximated that nozzle cylinder is attached to plate. As the current nozzle shape is manufactured as "Through Type" to reduce the stress concentration around the nozzle junction part of pressure vessel, a theoretical analysis on the cylinder with finite length should be performed to accomodate this fact. Each theoretical optimal values were obtained through the analysis of stress concentration caused by the variation of cylinder length and thickness, and these results were estimated by performing FEM Analysis. • The radar cross section (RCS) of warships is a crucial design factor to improve the survivability in terms of not only low observablity of the platform but also efficiency of on-board sensors and jamming devices against enemy threat. In design stage, numerical models are generated in order to quantitatively assess RCS, of which hull surfaces are modeled with the finite number of the flat plate. However, in practice, hull surfaces are permanently deformed by various kinds of loads such as winds and ocean waves faced during operations. In this paper, the effect of these shell plate deformation to RCS is numerically investigated. For this purpose, RCS calculations are carried out for various kinds of numerical models, such as single plates, dihedrals, large-sized undulate plates, and virtual warships, with some extent of permanent deformation. The results are compared with those of corresponding models without permanent deformation. It is concluded that the permanent deformation of hull surface highly influences RCS characteristics of warships, therefore they should be considered in the RCS analysis.

  • Induction heating is a process that is accompanied with magnetic and thermal situation. When the high-frequency current flows in the coil, induced eddy current generates heat to conductor. To simulate an induction and induction heating process, the finite element analysis program was developed. A coupling method between the magnetic and thermal routines was developed. In the process of magnetic analysis and thermal analysis, magnetic material properties and thermal material properties depending on temperature are taken into consideration. In this paper, to predict the angular deformation, temperature difference and the shape of heat affected zone were discussed. Also appropriate coil shape and other process variables for maximum angular deformation were proposed.

  • This paper describes a numerical and experimental study on the stability and failure behaviour of rectangular symmetric laminated composite plates. The plates are simply supported along the unloaded edges and clamped along the loaded ends, and they are subjected to uniaxial in-plane compression. The finite element method was employed for the theoretical study. The study examines the effect of the plate's stacking sequence and aspect ratio on the stability and failure response of rectangular symmetric laminated carbon fibre reinforced plastics composite plates. The study also includes the effect of the unloaded edge support conditions on the postbuckling response and failure of the plates. Extensive experimental investigation were also carried out to supplement the finite element study. A comprehensive comparison between theory and experimental data are presented and discussed in this contribution.
