Flat plate structures under lateral load are susceptible to the brittle shear failure of plate-column connection. To prevent such brittle failure, strength and ductility of the connection should be ensured. However, according to previous studies, current design methods do not accurately estimate the strength of plate-column connection. In the present study, parametric study using nonlinear finite element analysis was performed for interior connections. Based on the numerical results, a design method for the connection was developed. At the critical sections around the connection coexist flexural moment and shear developed by lateral and gravity loads, and maximum allowable eccentric shear stresses were proposed based on the interactions between the flexural moment and shear, The proposed method can precisely predict the strength of the connection, compared with the current design provisions. The predictability of the proposed method was verified by the comparisons with existing experiments and nonlinear numerical analyses.
This paper is dedicated to the buckling behaviors of strengthened perforated plates under edge shear loading, which is a typical load pattern of steel plates in civil engineering, especially in plate and box girders. The square plates considered each has a centric circular hole and is simply supported on four edges in the out-of-plane direction. Three types of strengthening stiffeners named ringed stiffener (RS), flat stiffener (FSA and FSB) and strip stiffener (SSA, SSB and SSC) are mainly discussed. The finite element method (FEM) has been employed to analyse the elastic and elasto-plastic buckling behavior of unstrengthened and strengthened perforated plates. Results show that most of the strengthened perforated plates behave higher buckling strengths than the unstrengthened ones, while the enhancements in elastic buckling stress and elasto-plastic ultimate strength are closely related to stiffener types as well as plate geometric parameters including plate slenderness ratio and hole diameter to plate width ratio. The critical slenderness ratios of shear loaded strengthened perforated plates, which determine the practical buckling pattern (i.e., elastic or elasto-plastic buckling) of the plates, are also studied. Based on the contrastive analyses of strengthening efficiency considering the influence of stiffener consumption, the most efficient cutout-strengthening methods for shear loaded perforated square plates with different slenderness ratios and circular hole diameter to plate width ratios are preliminarily identified.
The free vibration analysis of stiffened laminated composite plates has been performed using the layered (zigzag) finite element method based on the first order shear deformation theory. The layers of the laminated plate is modeled using nine-node isoparametric degenerated flat shell element. The stiffeners are modeled as three-node isoparametric beam elements based on Timoshenko beam theory. Bilinear in-plane displacement constraints are used to maintain the inter-layer continuity. A special lumping technique is used in deriving the lumped mass matrices. The natural frequencies are extracted using the subspace iteration method. Numerical results are presented for unstiffened laminated plates, stiffened isotropic plates, stiffened symmetric angle-ply laminates, stiffened skew-symmetric angle-ply laminates and stiffened skew-symmetric cross-ply laminates. The effects of fiber orientations (ply angles), number of layers, stiffener depths and degrees of orthotropy are examined.
To predict the radiating noise from the vibrating surface, it is required to know the velocity distribution of vibrating surface exactly as possible as it can. Although it can be obtained by finite element method, their accuracy is limited by theuncertainty of preparing input data such as material propoerties, damping, excitation, and the actual boundary conditions. Experimental values are accurate but are seldom available as many asthe data points compared to FEM mesh. Therefore, hybrid method of experiment and finite element method, called modal expansion technique, is investigated for the preparatin of accurate element method at specified frequencies and for the verification of this scheme, related experiment is performed. In high frequency range above 2000 Hz, piezo-electric material is used as an actuator.

A hybrid mesh based finite volume compressible flow code (PolySim) has been developed recently. Instead of the simple average method for the gradients of variables at each face, the volume average is applied for the calculation of the viscous flux. What is more, an improved Green Gauss method for the calculation of the gradient is also presented. These two techniques will improve both the accuracy and robustness of the code. The aerodynamic performance of this in-house cell centered code is examined by several widely-used bench-mark test cases. These cases include flows over flat plate and RAE 2822 etc. The comparisons on results between calculation and experiment are conducted. They show that the code can produce good numerical results which agree well with the corresponding experiment data.
A full-bead of multi-layer-steel engine head gasket, taking charge of the dynamic sealing of combustion chamber, is susceptible to fatigue failure. The fatigue durability of full-bead was assessed with the finite element analysis results and the high-cycle multi-axial fatigue theory. The assessment aimed to reveal the effects of the forming parameters and dimensions of full-bead. The results show that the selection of embossing parameters producing less deformation of bead plate is beneficial for the improvement of durability while the flatting has marginal influence. The fatigue durability also improves with the increase in the width of full-bead and the radial length of bore-side flat region. However, the dimensional effects are limited due to the occurrence of snap-through.

The line array roll set process, as one of many kinds of incremental forming processes, is a continuous process in which a flat metal plate is formed into a singly or doubly curved plate through successive passes of forming rolls. It was found that the curvature level of the formed plates in the previous study was well over the curvature required in shipyards. This fact shows that the LARS method has considerable potential for shipbuilding applications. In a shipbuilding yard, hull forming is an important fabrication process in which flat plates are deformed into singly or doubly curved plates. The major purpose of the present study is to estimate experimentally the general applicability of the line array roll set process for the manufacture of ship hull plates. In this study, the target shapes are selected through investigation of the shape classification of ship hull plates that comprise a certain vessel. Forming processes for twisted shapes are analyzed with the finite element method (FEM). Finally, the results of experimental work for two types of target shapes are presented.

A variable-node-flat shell element designated as CLS which has variable mid-side nodes with drilling freedom has been presented in this paper. The shell element to be applied in finite element analysis has been developed by combining a membrane element named as CLM with drilling rotation d.o.f. and plate bending element. The combined shell element possess six degrees of freedom per node. By introducing the variable-node elements which have physical midside nodes, some difficulties associated with imposing displacement constraints on irregular nodes to enforce interelement compatibility in common adaptive h-refinement on quadrilateral mesh are easily overcome. Detailed numerical studies show the excellent performance of the new shell elements developed in this study.
This paper deals with critical buckling load optimization of symmetric angle-ply laminated stepped flat columns under axial compression load. The design objective is the maximization of the critical buckling load and the design variable is the fiber orientations in the layers of the laminates. The classical laminate plate theory is used for the finite element solution of the laminated stepped flat columns. The modified feasible direction (MFD) method is used for the optimization routine. For this purpose, a program based on FORTRAN is exploited. Finally, the optimization results are presented for width ratios (b/B), ratios of fillet radius ($r_1/r_2$), aspect ratios (L/B) and boundary conditions. The results are presented in graphical and tabular forms and the results are compared.

When a crack in the plate with a circular hole approaches to the hole, the large stress concentration phenomenon appears at the boundary of the circular hole and the crack tip. As a numerical analysis method for the stress concentration in a structure, the Finite Element Method has been used. In this paper, however, the Boundary Element Method is employed, which may reduce the numbers of input data and the calculating time when compared with the Finite Element Method. A finite flat plate having a crack between the two circular holes is chosen as a model in this study. The results by the Boundary Element Method are compared with those of the Boundary collocation Method by Newman, which are already well established. And the structural behavior near the circular hole and at the crack tip is also investigated.
