Large displacement and rigidity about rubber component are expected by nonlinear and large deformation analysis in this study. Rubber is also used by the model of Mooney-Rivlin and the self contact between rubbers is established. There is the friction between rigid body and rubber, wall and floor. The nonlinear simulation analysis used in this study is expected to be widely applied in design, analysis and development of several rubber components which are used in automotive, railroad, and mechanical elements etc. By utilizing this method, time and cost can also be saved in developing new rubber product. The analysis of rubber components requires special material modeling and non-linear finite element analysis tools that are quite different from those used for metallic parts. The objective of this study is to analyze the rubber component with large deformation and non-linear properties.
Structural modal parameters i.e. natural frequencies, damping ratios and mode shapes are dynamic features obtained either by measuring the vibration responses of a structure or by means of finite elements models. Over the past two decades, modal parameters have been used to detect damage in structures by observing its variations over time. However, such variations can also be caused by environmental factors such as humidity, wind and, more importantly, temperature. In so doing, the use of modal parameters as damage indicators can be seriously compromised if these effects are not properly tackled. Many researchers around the world have found numerous methods to mitigate the influence of such environmental factors from modal parameters and many advanced damage indicators have been developed and proposed to improve the reliability of structural health monitoring. In this paper, several vibration tests are performed on a simply supported steel beam subjected to different damage scenarios and temperature conditions, aiming to describe the variation in modal parameters due to temperature changes. Moreover, four statistical methodologies are proposed to identify damage. Results show a slightly linear decrease in the modal parameters due to temperature increase, although it is not possible to establish an empirical equation to describe this tendency.
Nowadays, railway system plays a significant role in transportation, conveying cargo, passengers, minerals, grains, and so forth. Railway ballasted track is a conventional railway track as can be seen all over the world. Ballast, located underneath the sleepers, is the most important elements on ballasted track, which has many functions and requires routine maintenance. Ballast needs to be maintained frequently to prevent rail buckling, settlement, misalignment so that ballast has to be modelled accurately. Continuum model was introduced to model granular material and was extended in ballast. However, ballast is a heterogeneous material with highly nonlinear behaviour. Hence, ballast could not be modelled accurately in continuum model due to the discontinuities nature and material degradation of ballast. Discrete element modelling (DEM) is proposed as an alternative approach that provides insight into constitutive model, realistic particle, and contact algorithm between each particle. DEM has been studied in many recent decades. However, there are limitations due to the high computational time and memory consumption, which cause the lack of using in high range. This paper presents a review of recent ballast modelling with benefits and drawbacks. Ballast particles are illustrated either circular, circular crump, spherical, spherical crump, super-quadric, polygonal and polyhedral. Moreover, the gaps and limitations of previous studies are also summarized. The outcome of this study will help the understanding into different ballast modelling and particle. The insight information can be used to improve ballast modelling and monitoring for condition-based track maintenance.
Composites of insulating polyethylene and carbon black are widely used in switching elements, conductive paint, and other applications due to the large gap of resistance value. This research addresses the critical exponent of dielectric breakdown strength of polymer matrix composites (PMC) made with carbon black and polyethylene below the percolation threshold (Pt) for the first time. Here, Pt means the volume fraction of carbon black of which the resistance of the PMC is transferred from its sharp decrease to gradual decrease in accordance with the increase of carbon-black-filled content. First, the Pt is determined based on the critical exponents of resistivity and relative permittivity. Although huge cohesive bodies of carbon black are formed in case of being less than the Pt, a percolation path connecting the conducting phases is not formed. The dielectric breakdown strength (Dbs) of the PMC below Pt is measured by using an impulse voltage in the range from 10 kV to 40 kV to avoid the effect of joule heating. Although the observed Dbs data seems to be well fitted to a straight line with a slope of 0.9 on a double logarithm of (Pt-$V_{CB}$) and Dbs, the least squares method gives a slope of 0.97 for the PMC. It has been found that finite carbon-black clusters play an important role in dielectric breakdown.
This paper proposes a new approach to model the screw joints of integrated ceilings via the finite element method (FEM). The simulation models consist of the beam elements. The screw joints used in the main bars and cross bars and in the W bars and cross bars are assumed to be rotation springs. The stiffness of the rotation springs is defined according to the technical standards proposed by the National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management of Japan. By comparing the results of the sheer tests and the simulation models, the effectiveness and efficiency of the simulation models proposed in this paper are verified. This paper indicates the possibility that the seismic performance of suspended ceilings can be confirmed directly via beam element models using FEM if the stiffnesses of the screw joints of the ceiling substrates are appropriately defined. Because cross-sectional shapes, physical properties, and other variables of the ceiling substrates can be easily changed in the models, it is expected that suspended ceiling manufactures will be able to design and confirm the seismic performance of suspended ceilings with different cross-sectional shapes or materials via computers, instead of spending large amounts of time and money on shake table tests.
Purpose: Dimensions of body RF coil composed of 4 rectangular loops for low field open MRI hav been optimized. The design result shows the field inhomogeneity of B1 field below 1.5 dB in the 25 cm DSV can be achieved. Method: Our low field RF coil is composed of 4 rectangular strip loops that assumed to b located at both the bottom and top sides of permanent magnet. All the loops have identica dimensions and current amplitude. First, the inductance of a loop is calculated. Second, the current distribution on the coil strip is calculated by using finite difference time doma method (FDTD). It takes as much as 4 days in FDTD simulation for low frequency RF field That's why the electrical dipole radiation method is used for simulation. With the curren distribution obtained using the FDTD simulation, for various dimensional parameters th magnetic field has been calculated by electric dipole radiation method, where the curren elements are regarded as electric dipole radiation sources. The field pattern from electri dipole radiation is almost same as that from FDTD simulation. Also, it is same as that fro the result using the Viot-Savart equation, for far tone radiation term becomes zero and th Bl field amplitude of near one radiation is the same as the B field due to static current The field homogeneity is calculated in the 25 cm BSV.
This study presents comparation of fixed and viscos boundary condition effects on three-dimensional earthquake response and performance of a RCC dam considering linear and non-linear response. For this purpose, Cine RCC dam constructed in Aydın, Turkey, is selected in applications. The Drucker-Prager material model is considered for concrete and foundation rock in the nonlinear time-history analyses. Besides, hydrodynamic effect was considered in linear and non-linear dynamic analyses for both conditions. The hydrodynamic pressure of the reservoir water is modeled with the fluid finite elements based on the Lagrangian approach. The contact-target element pairs were used to model the dam-foundation-reservoir interaction system. The interface between dam and foundation is modeled with welded contact for both fixed and viscos boundary conditions. The displacements and principle stress components obtained from the linear and non-linear analyses are compared each other for empty and full reservoir cases. Seismic performance analyses considering demand-capacity ratio criteria were also performed for each case. According to numerical analyses, the total displacements and besides seismic performance of the dam increase by the effect of the viscous boundary conditions. Besides, hydrodynamic pressure obviously decreases the performance of the dam.

Spacer dampers maintain the constant gaps between each conductor in a bundle conductor-transmission line, and are installed at proper intervals to keep a line from all sorts of damages derived from the vibration energy caused by mechanical or electrical external factors. It is most important to embody a technology which considers difficulties of maintenance and repair, and has optimum elements in order to prevent accidents such as destruction by fire or the snapping of a wire by the effect of vibration phenomenon coming from transmission line. In the present thesis, therefore, the analysis of vibratory characteristics of spacer damper is set up by analytical methods such as the analysis of conductor motion's governing equation, the equation of spacer damper's motion, spacer damper-fastened wire's motion in a span, and the numerical analysis of finite difference method. Furthermore, the installation distance between spacer dampers was scrutinized by simulations of various vibration phenomena which change at any time as actual conditions do, and hereafter we will be able to analyze all kinds of vibration phenomena coming from a boltless spacer damper with 6 bundle conductor for 765 k V transmission line based on new analytical methods.
Visco-Plastic Damper (VPD) as a passive energy dissipation device with dual behavior has been recently numerically studied. It consists of two bent steel plates and segments with a viscoelastic solid material in between, combining and improving characteristics of both displacement-dependent and velocity-dependent devices. In order to trust the performance of VPD, for the 1st time this paper experimentally investigates prototype damper behavior under a wide range of frequency and amplitude of dynamic loading. A high-axial damping rubber is innovatively proposed as the viscoelastic layer designed to withstand large axial strains and dissipate energy accordingly. Test results confirmed all assumptions about VPD. The behavior of VPD subjected to low levels of excitation is elastic while with increasing levels of excitation, a significant source of energy dissipation is provided through the yielding of the steel elements in addition to the viscoelastic energy dissipation. The results showed energy dissipation of 99.35 kN.m under a dynamic displacement with 14.095 mm amplitude and 0.333 Hz frequency. Lateral displacement at the middle of the device was created with an amplification factor obtained ranging from 2.108 to 3.242 in the rubber block. Therefore, the energy dissipation of viscoelastic material of VPD was calculated 18.6 times that of the ordinary viscoelastic damper.
The finite element method (FEM), a powerful numerical modeling tool for solving various engineering problems, is frequently applied to three-dimensional (3-D) modeling thanks to its capability of discretizing and simulating the shape of model with finite number of elements. Considering the accuracy of the solution and computing time in modeling of engineering problems, it is preferable to construct physical continuity and simplify mesh system. Although there exist systematic mesh generation systems for arbitrary shaped model, it is hard to model a simple cylinder in terms of 3-D coordinate system especially in the vicinity of the central axis. In this study I adopt cylindrical coordinate system for modeling the 3-D model space and define the origin of the coordinates with mathematically clear coordinate transformation. Since we can simulate the whole space with hexahedral elements, the cylindrical coordinate system is effective in handling the 3-D model structure. The 3-D do resistivity modeling scheme developed in this study provides basie principle for borehole-to-surface resistivity survey, which can be a useful tool for the application to environmental problem.
