  • The paper deals with strength design of a riser support installed on floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel under various loading conditions - operation, extreme, damaged, one line failure case (OLFC) and installation. The design problem is formulated such that thickness sizing variables are determined by minimizing the weight of a riser support structure subject to stresses constraints. The initial design model is generated based on an actual FPSO riser support specification. The finite element analysis (FEA) is conducted using MSC/NASTRAN, and optimal solutions are obtained via moving least squares method (MLSM) in the context of response surface based approximate optimization. For the meta-modeling of inequality constraint functions of stresses, a constraint-feasible moving least squares method (CF-MLSM) is used in the present study. The method of CF-MLSM, compared to a conventional MLSM, has been shown to ensure the constraint feasibility in a case where the approximate optimization process is employed. The optimization results present improved design performances under various riser operating conditions.

  • A flexible packaging scheme, which includes chip packaging, has been developed using a thinned silicon chip. Mechanical characteristics of thinned silicon chips are examined by bending tests and finite element analysis. Thinned silicon chips (t<30 $\mu\textrm{m}$) are fabricated by chemical etching process to avoid possible surface damages on them. And the chips are stacked directly on $Kapton^{Kapton}$film by thermal compressive bonding. The low height difference between the thinned silicon chip and $Kapton^{Kapton}$film allows electroplating for electrical interconnection method. Because the 'Chip' is embedded in the flexible substrate, higher packaging density and wearability can be achieved by maximized usable packaging area.

  • This study focuses on a detailed ball-bearing model for spur gears. The nonlinear ball-bearing stiffness with radial clearance is derived and calculated. The bearing stiffness is used to the 3-degree-of-freedom (DOF) spur gear system model. The mode characteristics of the gear system model are analyzed and verified by performing finite-element analysis (FEA). From the results, the bearing stiffness on the radial clearance was more sensitive under low-load conditions compared to high-load conditions. The bearing stiffness significantly affected the gear dynamics in the low-frequency region, while the mesh stiffness affected the high natural frequency.

  • The ratcheting behavior was studied experimentally for Z2CND18.12N elbow piping under cyclic bending and steady internal pressure. Dozens of cyclic plasticity models for structural ratcheting responses simulations were used in the paper. The four models, namely, Bilinear (BKH), Multilinear (MKIN/KINH), Chaboche (CH3), were already available in the ANSYS finite element package. Advanced cyclic plasticity models, such as, modified Chaboche (CH4), Ohno-Wang, modified Ohno-Wang, Abdel Karim-Ohno and modified Abdel Karim-Ohno, were implemented into ANSYS for simulating the experimental responses. Results from the experimental and simulation studies were presented in order to demonstrate the state of structural ratcheting response simulation by these models. None of the models evaluated perform satisfactorily in simulating circumferential strain ratcheting response. Further, improvement in cyclic plasticity modeling and incorporation of material and structural features, like time-dependent, temperature-dependent, non-proportional, dynamic strain aging, residual stresses and anisotropy of materials in the analysis would be essential for advancement of low-cycle fatigue simulations of structures.

  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is often used to identify local stress/strain concentrations where a component is likely to fail. In order to reduce the degree of strain concentration, component thickness can be increased in those regions, or a stronger material can be used. In short fiber reinforced composite materials, strength and stiffness can be increased through proper fiber alignment. The field-aided microtailoring (FAiMTa) process is one promising method for doing this. FAiMTa uses principles of dielectrophoresis to preferentially align particles or fibers within a matrix. To achieve the preferred fiber orientation, an interdigitated electrode network must be integrated into the mold halves which can be fabricated by additive manufacturing (AM) processes. However, the process of determining the preferred fiber arrangements and electrode locations can be very challenging. This paper presents algorithms to semi-automate the interdigitated electrode design process. The algorithm has been implemented in the Solidworks CAD system and is demonstrated in this paper.

  • Through the recent accident, the checking of ultimate hull girder capacity for container ship should be needed. Smith’s method is well known as the only simplified method to access rapidly for ultimate hull girder capacity except very expensive nonlinear F.E approach. This simplified method, however, is admitted to apply only to bulker and tanker in accordance with Classification Rules up to now. The targets of this study are to verify effectiveness of the simplified method for container ship’s ultimate hull girder strength and to propose the safety factor considering the local bending in double bottom structures due to out of plane loads through the nonlinear F.E analyses. Two different sized ships and three loading conditions which are pure bending, homo-loading and one-bay empty condition were used for this study. Based on the F.E results, the present study showed that CSR’s simplified method is available for the ultimate hull girder strength of container ship and over 1.2 of safety factor should be applied to consider the local bending effect in double bottom structures due to out of plane loads such as sea pressure an cargo.

  • The aim of this paper is to examine the hydraulically optimized camber of a blade. Prior studies have tried to determine the sound method of design on small-hydro turbines. These have appeared to realize a reasonably efficient small-hydro turbine. Nonetheless, specific and accurate design data have not as yet been established for the shape of the runner blade. Hence, this study examines the performance characteristic of an axial propeller turbine with 0~8% camber variations. The results of output power, efficiency, and pressure distribution of the turbine are graphically depicted. The definition of camber refers to the NACA airfoil. The commercial finite element analysis (FEA) packages, ANSYS, and CFX are used in this study. The results revealed the performance characteristics on small-hydro turbine and suggested a highly efficient section shape of the runner.

  • The demand for the circular hollow section (CHS) has been increasing due to its structural advantage in long-span structures and high-rise buildings. There are not enough researches on the CHS structure, though. The behavior of the gusset plate CHS joint, to predict the ultimate strength, is not easy to predict because the load deflection curve does not show consistency. Therefore, in this study, experiments and finite element analysis (FEA) were carried out to determine the ultimate strength according to the proposed ultimate deformation limit. Finally, a reasonable ultimate strength formula was proposed through comparisons with other design guides.

  • The Schwarzschild-Chang off-axis telescope is a "linear astigmatism-free" confocal system. The telescope comprises two pieces of aluminum-alloy freeform mirrors that are fabricated with diamond turning machine (DTM) process. We designed optomechanical structures where optical components in the telescope system can be adjustable on a linear stage. Optomechanical deformation caused by the weight of system itself and its temperature variation is analyzed by the finite element analysis (FEA). The results show that the deformation is estimated in the tolerance range. For the optic-axis alignment of telescope system, three-point alignment (TPA) method is chosen. The TPA method uses three parallel lasers and a plane mirror. Point source images were taken from collimated light and field observation. The performance of optical system was tested by point spread function and aberration measurement of the point sources.

  • In general, in most case of high temperature superconducting (HTS) rotating machinery, HTS field coil is rotated. HTS homopolar motor field coil is nat necessary to be rotated and the torque of motor is not strongly related with the field coil. Therefore, HTS homopolar motor has a superior mechanical stability comparing with other HTS rotating machines. These advantages can make the design of HTS field coil and cryostat much more simple. In this paper, HTS field coil was fabricated and tested. Before test, authors habe estimated the critical current of HTS field coil at 77K by simulation using FEA (Finite Element Analysis) software and power law equation. The experiment details and results are presented in this paper, and discussed. The field windings are made with HTS Bi-2223 wire which operates at 77K.
