  • In this study, we consider stationary waiting times in finite-buffer 3-node single-server queues in series with a Poisson arrival process and with either constant or non-overlapping service times. We assume that each node has a finite buffer except for the first node. The explicit expressions of waiting times in all areas of the stochastic system were driven as functions of finite buffer capacities. These explicit forms show that a system sojourn time does not depend on the finite buffer sizes, and also allow one to compute and compare characteristics of stationary waiting times at all areas under two blocking rules communication and manufacturing blocking. The goal of this study is to apply these results to an optimization problem which determines the smallest buffer capacities satisfying predetermined probabilistic constraints on stationary waiting times at all nodes. Numerical examples are also provided.

  • In this study, we consider characteristics of waiting times in single-server 3-node tandem queues with a Poisson arrival process, finite buffers and deterministic or non-overlapping service times at each queue. There are three buffers: one at the first node is infinite and the others are finite. The explicit expressions of waiting times in all areas of the systems, which are driven as functions of finite buffer capacities, show that the sojourn time does not depend on the finite buffer capacities and also allow one to compute and compare characteristics of waiting times at all areas of the system under two blocking policies: communication and manufacturing blocking. As an application of these results, moreover, an optimization problem which determines the smallest buffer capacities satisfying predetermined probabilistic constraints on waiting times is considered. Some numerical examples are also provided.

  • In this study, we consider characteristics of stationary waiting times in single-server 2-node tandem queues with a finite buffer, a Poisson arrival process and deterministic service times. The system has two buffers: one at the first node is infinite and the other one at the second node is finite. We show that the sojourn time or departure process does not depend on the capacity of the finite buffer and on the order of nodes (service times), which are the same as the previous results. Furthermore, the explicit expressions of waiting times at the first node are given as a function of the capacity of the finite buffer and we are able to disclose a relationship of waiting times between under communication blocking and under manufacturing blocking. Some numerical examples are also given.

  • Queueing models are good models for fragments of communication systems and networks, so their investigation is interesting for theory and applications. Theses queues may play an important role for the validation of different decomposition algorithms designed for investigating more general queueing networks. So, in this paper we illustrate that the batch size distribution affects the loss probability, which is the main performance measure of a finite buffer queues.

  • We investigate the scheduling problem for periodic job shops with blocking. We develop Petri net models for periodic job shops with finite buffers. A buffer control method would allow the jobs to enter the input buffer of the next machine in the order for which they are completed. We discuss difficulties in using such a random order buffer control method and random access buffers. We thus propose an alternative buffer control policy that restricts the jobs to enter the input buffer of the next machine in a predetermined order. The buffer control method simplifies job flows and control systems. Further, it requires only a cost-effective simple sequential buffer. We show that the periodic scheduling model with finite buffers using the buffer control policy can be transformed into an equivalent periodic scheduling model with no buffer, which is modeled as a timed marked graph. We characterize the structural properties for deadlock detection. Finally, we develop a mixed integer programming model for the no buffer problem that finds a deadlock-free optimal sequence that minimizes the cycle time.

  • Recently, M/G/1 priority queues with a finite buffer for high-priority customers and an infinite buffer for low-priority customers have applied to the analysis of communication systems with two heterogeneous traffics : delay-sensitive traffic and loss-sensitive traffic. However, these studies are limited to M/G/1 priority queues with finite and infinite buffers under a work-conserving priority discipline such as the nonpreemptive or preemptive resume priority discipline. In many situations, if a service is preempted, then the preempted service should be completely repeated when the server is available for it. This study extends the previous studies to M/G/1 priority queues with finite and infinite buffers under the preemptive repeat-different and preemptive repeat-identical priority disciplines. We derive the loss probability of high-priority customers and the waiting time distributions of high- and low-priority customers. In order to do this, we utilize the delay cycle analysis of finite-buffer M/G/1/K queues, which has been recently developed for the analysis of M/G/1 priority queues with finite and infinite buffers, and combine it with the analysis of the service time structure of a low-priority customer for the preemptive-repeat and preemptive-identical priority disciplines. We also present numerical examples to explore the impact of the size of the finite buffer and the arrival rates and service distributions of both classes on the system performance for various preemptive priority disciplines.

  • In this letter, we consider an m-node tandem queue (queues in series) with a Poisson arrival process and either deterministic or non-overlapping service times. With the assumption that each node has a finite buffer except for the first node, we show the non-increasing convex property of stationary waiting time with respect to the finite buffer capacities. We apply it to an optimization problem which determines the smallest buffer capacities subject to probabilistic constraints on stationary waiting times.

  • This paper presents an elastoplastic analysis for spent nuclear fuel disposal container and its 50 cm thick bentonite buffer to predict the collapse of the container while the horizontal asymmetric sudden rock movement of 10 cm is applied on the composite structure. This sudden rock movement is anticipated by the earthquake etc. at a deep underground. Elastoplastic material model is adopted. Drucker-Prager yield criterion is used for the material yield prediction of the bentonite buffer and von-Mises yield criterion is used for the material yield prediction of the container. Analysis results show that even though very large deformations occur beyond the yield point in the bentonite buffer, the container structure still endures elastic small strains and stresses below the yield strength. Hence, the asymmetric 50 cm thick bentonite buffer can protect the container safely against the 10 cm sudden rock movement by earthquake etc.. Analysis results also show that bending deformations occur in the container structure due to the shear deformation of the bentonite buffer. The finite element analysis code, NISA, is used for the analysis.
