  • In this paper, we have designed a Fingerprint Recognition System based on the Embedded LINUX. The fingerprint is captured using the AS-S2 semiconductor sensor. To extract a feature vector we transform the image of the fingerprint into a column vector. The image is row-wise filtered with the low-pass filter of the Haar wavelet. The feature vectors of the different fingerprints are compared by computing with the probabilistic neural network the distance between the target feature vector and the stored feature vectors in advance. The system implemented consists of a server PC based on the LINUX and a client based on the Embedded LINUX. The client is a Tynux box-x board using a PXA-255 CPU. The algorithm is simple and fast in computing and comparing the fingerprints.

  • Fingerprint-based identification is known to be used for a very long time. Owing to their uniqueness and immutability, fingerprints are today the most widely used biometric features. Therefore, recognition using fingerprints is one of the safest methods as a way of personal identification. But fingerprint identification system has a critical weakness. Since the fingerprint identification time dramatically increase when we compare the unknown fingerprint's minutiae with fingerprint database's minutiae. In this paper, a ridge orientation extraction method using Index table is proposed to solve the problem. The goal of fast direction image extraction is to reduce the identification time and to improve the clarity of ridge and valley structures of input fingerprint image.

  • Gloves are very important evidence at a crime scene; specifically, rubber gloves can be found easily at homes. Therefore, crime scene investigators attempt to develop fingerprints inside the rubber gloves that are discovered, for identifying unknown suspects. This study compared the effectiveness of three different methods that are used for developing latent prints on gloves with aging time. These were the powder, cyanoacrylate fuming, and multi-metal deposition I methods. The powder method achieved good results for 1-3 days of aged prints, and the cyanoacrylate fuming method worked well on 2-week-old prints. In comparison, multi-metal deposition I method developed good quality fingerprints for 6 weeks of aging time.

  • The arbitrary primed polymerase chain reaction (AP-PCR) has been used to detect the genetic alternations in the related species. Simple and reproducible fingerprints of complex genomes can be generated using single arbitrary chosen primers and the PCR. The technique was applied to the Oryza species and characterized the relationship among three cultivars of rice species based on theresult of genomic DNA fingerprints. The results indicated that the polymorphism revealed in rice strains and the differences in the PCR product pattern could be represented for each strainis. There was many variationsin the PCR product pattern between cv. Dongin(japonica type)and cv.Hyangdo (indica type), and our chosen AP-primers can ge as markers for strain identification and verfication.

  • Biometric technologies using biometric information like fingerprints features are in wide use for the secure user authentication in many services including log-in of computer systems, entrance ID and E-commercial security. Nowadays, biometric technologies are ported into small embedded systems like security tokens or smart cards due to the merit of being secure and automatic in comparison with the previous method in user authentication such as using a PIN. In this paper, the security token developed as an embedded system and tile user authentication system implemented and tested using fingerprints information are described. Communications between the security token and tile host are tested and verified with USB. And, execution time and runtime memory on tile security token board was measured and performance improvement was described. In addition, requisites for the transit from the security token to the match-on-card was mentioned.

  • Multi-spectral analyses of excitation and emission fluorescence was applied to spilled crude oils in characterization of their specific fluorescence patterns which is called oil fingerprints. In the present study, oil fingerprints of 33 crude, 4 fuel and 2 other oils were analyzed to establish data base library search system. Cluster analysis showed that crude oils could be classified into two large groups according to their fluorescence characteristics. In simulated experiments, all the spilled sources was identifiable by the present library search system. In the natural environment this system could identify the exact source of weathered crude oil slicks upton 10 days. The present study shows that the fluorescence fingerprinting method with the library search system is reliable and superior to toutine GC/HPLC analyses in identification of the source of weathered spilled oils in the marine environment.

  • Forensic light source is commonly used for enhancing evidence in a nondestructive way. Latent fingerprints play an important role in an aspect of crime scene investigation. In this study, researchers compared enhancement of standard fingerprints treated with DFO and 1,2-IND in accordance with laser and LED light sources. As a result, laser light source has a better effect rather than LED light sources. However, each light source has strengths and weaknesses in terms of performance and portability. Therefore, researchers recommend that crime scene investigators need to use laser and LED light sources depending on the situation.

  • Bloody fingerprints are important in many cases - especially in murder case. This study compared effectiveness of some reagents which had better quality of developing bloody fingerprints from human skin. Leuco crystal violet(LCV), hungarian red, amido black, coomassie blue, acid violet17, and crowle's double stain were used. Fingerprints were generated in the depletion series, and tissue method was used in applying all reagents. LCV showed the best result in this study.
