Evaluation of Electrokinetic Remediation of Arsenic Contaminated Soils

  • The potential of electrokinetic (EK) technology has been successfully demonstrated for the remediation of heavy metal contaminated fine-grained soils through laboratory scale and field application studies. Arsenic contamination in soil is a serious problem affecting both site use and groundwater quality. The EK technology was evaluated for the removal of arsenic from two soil samples: kaolinite clay artificially contaminated with arsenic and arsenic-bearing tailing soil taken from the Myungbong (MB) mining area. The effect of cathodic electrolyte on the process was investigated using three different types of electrolyte: deionized water (DIW), potassium phosphate (KH$_2$PO$_4$) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The result of experiments on the kaolinite clay shows that the potassium phosphate was most effective in extracting arsenic, probably resulting from anion exchange of arsenic species by phosphate. On the contrary, the sodium hydroxide seemed to be most efficient in removing arsenic from the tailing soil, and it is explained by the fact that sodium hydroxide increased the soil pH and accelerated ionic migration of arsenic species through increase in desorption and dissolution of arsenic species into pore water.

지반의 침식특성을 이용한 교각세굴 사례 연구 (A Case Study of Pier Scour Considering Soil Erodibility)

  • 사례 연구를 통해서 실제 세립토 교량현장에 대해 기존 교량세굴 해석모델들의 적용성을 분석하였다. 하상이 실트질 점토로 구성된 강화 초지대교를 대상교량으로 선정하여 현장조사를 실시하였다. 초음파 센서장비를 이용하여 교각주변의 세굴심을 직접 측정하였으며, 불교란시료를 채취하여 지반공학적 특성을 결정하고, 또한 세굴률 실험을 통해 대상 지반의 유속별 세굴률을 분석하였다. 그 결과를 바탕으로 기존에 제안된 대표적인 교량세굴 해석모델들을 이용하여 주요 교각의 세굴심을 예측하여 실측 세굴심과 비교하였다. 지반의 침식특성을 고려하지 않는 기존의 교량세굴 해석모델들은 모두 3.6∼6.5의 비율로 세굴심을 과대평가하는 경향을 보였으며, SRICOS 방법은 실측세굴심에 비해 1.7배의 합리적인 결과를 보여주었다.

  • For reclamaing fill materials, hydraulic fill is needed in domestic parts of the reclamation sites every year. Engineering properties of soils after reclamation is calculated by laboratory. But before or after reclamation, reclamation quatities depend on the depth from the ground surface when hydraulic fill is dumped. In this paper, the engineering properties on the depth from ground surface are assumed by cone penetration test where fine grained soft soil is formed is proposed through several sites.

An investigation into the effects of lime-stabilization on soil-geosynthetic interface behavior

  • The use of lime stabilization and geosynthetic reinforcement is a common approach to improve the performance of fine-grained soils in geotechnical applications. However, the impact of this combination on the soil-geosynthetic interaction remains unclear. This study addresses this gap by evaluating the interface efficiency and soil-geosynthetic interaction parameters of lime-stabilized clay (2%, 4%, 6%, and 8% lime content) reinforced with geotextile or geogrid using direct shear tests at various curing times (1, 7, 14, and 28 days). Additionally, machine learning algorithms (Support Vector Machine and Artificial Neural Network) were employed to predict soil shear strength. Findings revealed that lime stabilization significantly increased soil shear strength and interaction parameters, particularly at the optimal lime content (4%). Notably, stabilization improved the performance of soil-geogrid interfaces but had an adverse effect on soil-geotextile interfaces. Furthermore, machine learning algorithms effectively predicted soil shear strength, with sensitivity analysis highlighting lime percentage and geosynthetic type as the most significant influencing factors.

다짐 풍화잔적토의 거동특성 연구 (Behavioral Characteristics of Decomposed Residual Solis)

  • 삼축압축시험의 결과를 이용해 2차광물성분을 많이 포함하고 있는 모앙이 편마암인 풍화잔적토의 압축 및 강도특성을 분석하여, 모암 및 광물성분비가 다른 기존의 연구결과와 비교하여 풍화잔적토의 모암과 광물성부네 따른 강도정수의 차이 및 거동특성을 파악하기 위한 근간을 제시하고자 본 연구를 수행하였으며, 치를 위하여 CIV, CID, CKoU, CKoD 등의 삼축압축시험을 실시하였다. 기원 및 광물성분이 다른 풍화잔적토라도 정규압축곡선(NCL)의 기울기는 유사한 양상을 보이며, 압축시 입자파쇄효과로 인하여 약 85%의 소성변형량을 나타냈다. 전단시 또이동 시료는 김천 및 안동 시료와는 다르게 응력연화현상을 나타내 기원 및 구성광물에 따라 다른 거동을 보여줌을 알 수 있었다. 펀단저항각은 시료가 석영과 장석성분 등의 1차 광물과 2차광물의 구성성 분에 따라 달라짐을 알 수 있었으며, 반면에 간극수압계수는 기원 및 광물성분을 막론하고 1 이상의 큰 값을 나타냈다.

Evaluating the impacts of using piles and geosynthetics in reducing the settlement of fine-grained soils under static load

  • The construction of combined pile-raft foundations is considered as the main option in designing foundations in high-rise buildings, especially in soils close to the ground surface which do not have sufficient bearing capacity to withstand building loads. This paper deals with the geotechnical report of the Northern Fereshteh area of Tabriz, Iran, and compares the characteristics of the single pile foundation with the two foundations of pile group and geogrid. Besides, we investigate the effects of five principal parameters including pile diameter and length, the number of geogrid layers, the depth of groundwater level, and pore water pressure on vertical consolidation settlement and pore water pressure changes over a year. This study assessed the mechanism of the failure of the soil under the foundation using numerical analysis as well. Numerical analysis was performed using the two-dimensional finite element PLAXIS software. The results of fifty-four models indicate that the diameter of the pile tip, either as a pile group or as a single pile, did not have a significant effect on the reduction of the consolidation settlement in the soil in the Northern Fereshteh Street region. The optimum length for the pile in the Northern Fereshteh area is 12 meters, which is economically feasible. In addition, the construction of four-layered ten-meter-long geogrids at intervals of 1 meter beneath the deep foundation had a significant preventive impact on the consolidation settlement in clayey soils.

지하수 주입실험을 통한 도로노면 하부의 공동 확장 평가 (Evaluation on Cavity Expansion under Pavement based on Groundwater Injection test)

  • 본 연구에서는 도로노면 하부 지반에서 발생한 공동의 확장특성을 평가하기 위하여, 지하수주입 실험을 수행하였다. 즉, 공동체적에 비례한 일정량의 물을 단계별로 주입하고, 주입한 물이 배출됨에 따라 확대되는 공동을 모니터링 함으로써, 공동의 체적변화를 확인하였다. 실험결과, 지하수 주입에 따른 공동의 체적은 증가하다 수렴 또는 감소하는 경향을 나타냈다. 이는 지하수 주입 시, 공동이 확장되는 과정에서 주변의 이완된 지반이 일부 붕괴되거나 세립토가 주변 지반의 간극을 채우기 때문인 것으로 분석되었다. 또한 지하수 주입 단계에 따른 공동의 체적변화와 확장특성을 분석한 결과, 실험대상 공동은 횡방향으로 확장되는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 그리고 지하수 유동에 따라 이완된 공동 주변지반이 붕괴되고, 붕괴된 토사가 공동하부의 지중으로 유실되는 과정이 반복됨으로써 공동이 확장되는 것으로 평가되었다.

영남지역 국도에 사용된 흙의 CBR 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on CBR Characteristics of National Highway in Yeongnam Region)

  • 국토교통부 부산지방국토관리청에서 영남지역의 국도건설을 위해 수행된 약 30년간의 총 480개 시험데이터를 이용하여 지역별 및 모암 특성별로 나누어 흙쌓기재료의 기초적인 토질정수의 통계치를 나타내고 각 토질정수간의 상관성을 분석하였다. 특히 CBR값과 흙의 토질특성간의 상관관계를 분석하였다. 영남지역의 흙 시료는 SM이 163개로 약 34%를 점하며, SC, CL 및 SP를 합하면 4종의 흙이 전체 시료의 약 79%에 해당한다. 영남지역의 조립토의 평균 CBR값은 12.7~20.3%의 범위를 나타내며, 세립토는 평균 CBR값이 4.8%~7.1%의 범위를 나타내며 조립토에 비해 약 절반 이하였다. 자연함수비, No.200체 통과율, 최적함수비 및 최대건조밀도 등이 CBR값과 좋은 상관관계를 나타내며, No.200체 통과율이 가장 높은 상관성을 가짐을 알았다. 또한 영남지역을 모암의 특성에 따라 행정구역을 6 zone으로 구분하여 각각의 상관성을 검토한 결과, 상관성이 증가됨을 알았다. 향후 기술자가 본 연구결과를 활용하면 영남지역의 행정구역별, 모암특성별 및 토질분류별 개략적 토질특성 파악과 각 토질정수간의 상관성을 파악하는데 도움이 될 것으로 판단된다.

휴대용 정적 콘 관입시험을 통한 저수지 제방 토양의 다짐, 강도 특성 및 사면 안정성 예측 (Prediction of Compaction, Strength Characteristics for Reservoir Soil Using Portable Static Cone Penetration Test)

  • Due to climate change and aging of reservoirs, damage to embankment slopes is increasing. However, the safety diagnosis of the reservoir slope is mainly conducted by visual observation, and the time and economic cost are formidable to apply soil mechanical tests and slope stability analysis. Accordingly, this study presented a predicting method for the compaction and strength characteristics of the reservoir embankment soil using a portable static cone penetration test. The predicted items consisted of dry density, cohesion, and internal friction angle, which are the main factors of slope stability analysis. Portable static cone penetration tests were performed at 19 reservoir sites, and prediction equations were constructed from the correlation between penetration resistance data and test results of soil samples. The predicted dry density and strength parameters showed a correlation with test results between R2 0.40 and 0.93, and it was found to replace the test results well when used as input data for slope stability analysis (R2 0.8134 or more, RMSE 0.0320 or less). In addition, the prediction equations for the minimum safety factor of the slope were presented using the penetration resistance and gradient. As a result of comparing the predicted safety factor with the analysis results, R2 0.5125, RMSE 0.0382 in coarse-grained soil, R2 0.4182 and RMSE 0.0628 in fine-grained soil. The results of this study can be used as a way to improve the existing slope safety diagnosis method, and are expected to be used to predict the characteristics of various soils and inspect slopes.

실대형 반복재하시험을 통한 매립형궤도 소성누적침하 평가 (Evaluation of Plastic Accumulative Settlement of Embedded Rail Track by Real-scale Repetitive Load Tests)

  • An active application of tram is being expected in Korea in the near future. For the tram operation in urban area, the embedded rail tracks where rails are completely embedded with pavements is required. When the embedded rail track is constructed on fine-grained subgrade soil, excessive cumulative plastic settlements due to repetitive tram road may occur. In this study, repetitive load tests were carried out to evaluate the accumulative plastic settlements of subgrade soils underneath embedded rail tracks. Two real-scale track specimens of 5 m lengths were constructed considering the maximum cant of a curved line. Repetitive tram loads of three million times were applied to the tracks in 5 Hz frequency. The accumulating patterns of plastic settlements were analyzed. Tram load distributing effects of the concrete slabs were also evaluated using the measured data of earth pressures cells that were installed underneath track. Also the measured settlements were compared with the estimated settlements calculated from an existing experimental equations, and its validity is discussed.
