The Fabrication and Sinterability of $Al_2O_3/Cu$ Nanocomposite Powder ($Al_2O_3/Cu$ 나노복합분말의 제조 및 소결 특성)

  • Mechanical properties of oxide based materials could be improved by nanocomposite processing. To investigate optimum route for fabrication of nanocomposite enabling mass production, high energy ball milling and Pulse Electric Current Sintering (PECS) were adopted. By high energy ball milling, the $Al_2O_3$-based composite powder with dispersed Cu grains below 20 nm in diameter was successfully synthesized. The PECS method as a new process for powder densification has merits of improved sinterability and short sintering time at lower temperature than conventional sintering process. The relative densities of the $Al_2O_3$-5vol%Cu composites sintered at $1250^{\circ}C$ and $1300^{\circ}C$ with holding temperature of $900^{\circ}C$ were 95.4% and 95.7% respectively. Microstructures revealed that the composite consisted of the homogeneous and very fine grains of $Al_2O_3$ and Cu with diameters less than 40 nm and 20 nm respectively The composite exhibited enhanced toughness compared with monolithic $Al_2O_3$. The influence of the Cu content upon fracture toughness was discussed in terms of microstructural characteristics.

Synthesis of Ultra Eine MnxZn1-xFe2O4(x = 0.69~0.74) Powder and Its Magnetic Properties (초미립 MnxZn1-xFe2O4(x = 0.69~0.74)분말의 제조 및 자기적 성질)

  • $MnxZn_{1-x}Fe_2O_4$ (x=0.69~0.74) powders synthesized by the thermal decomposition of organic acid salts. The obtained powders were uniform in composition and ultra-fine particle with about 400 nm. The amount of spinel phase of these powders was about 50% in X-ray diffraction patterns. The calcination of powder was carried out at $900^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours in air. After the powders were calcined. the mean size of powder was about 500 nm and the amount of spinel phase was increased over about 65%. The maximum amount of spinel phase was about 75% in the specimen of X=0.72. The magnetic properties of calcined $Mn_{0.72}Zn_{0.28}Fe_2O_4$ powders were the best among the different among the different compositions.

Effect of Milling Time on the Microstructure and Phase Transformation Behaviors of Ni-B Powder During Mechanical Alloying Process (Ni-B 분말의 기계적 합금화 과정에서 밀링시간에 따른 미세조직과 상변화 거동)

  • In this study, the effect of milling time on the microstructure and phase transformation behaviors of Ni-12 wt.%B powders was investigated using vibratory ball milling process. X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the phase transformation of mixed Ni-B elemental powder occurred after 50 hours of milling, with a formation of nickel boride phases. Through the study of microstructures in mechanical alloying process, it was considered that ball milling strongly accelerates solid-state diffusions of the Ni and B atoms during mechanical alloying process. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that most of B atoms in the powder were linked to Ni with a formation of nickel boride phases after 200 hours of milling. It was finally concluded that mechanical alloying using ball milling process is feasible to synthesize fine and uniform nickel boride powders.

  • Fe-TiC composite powder was fabricated by high-energy milling of powder mixture of (Fe, TiC) and (FeO, $TiH_2$, C) as starting materials, respectively. The latter one was heat-treated for reaction synthesis of TiC phase after milling. Both powders were spark-plasma sintered at various temperatures of $680-1070^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. with sintering pressure of 70 MPa and the heating rate of $50^{\circ}C/min$. under vacuum of 0.133 Pa. Density and hardness of the sintered compact was investigated. Fe-TiC composite fabricated from (FeO, $TiH_2$, C) as starting materials showed better sintered properties. It seems to be resulted from ultra-fine TiC particle size and its uniform distribution in Fe-matrix compared to the simply mixed (Fe, TiC) powder.

  • The injection molded Fe sintered bodies were fabricated using two kinds of Fe powders haying 50 nm and $3\sim5{\mu}m$ in diameter. In the using of Fe powder having 50 nm in diameter, the comparatively dense bodies ($94\sim97\%$) were obtained even at low sintering temperature ($600\sim700^{\circ}C$), while in the sintered bodies ($1000^{\circ}C$) using $3\sim5{\mu}m$ Fe powder, their relative densities showed low values about $93\%$, although they were strongly depend on the sintering temperature and volume ratio of Fe powder and binder. In the sintered bodies using of 50 nm Fe powders, the volume shrinkage and grain size increased as the sintering temperature increased, but the values of hardness decreased. In the sample sintered at $650^{\circ}C$, the values of relative density, volume shrinkage and grain size were $96\%,\;37\%\;and\;0.97{\mu}n$, respectively and the minimum value of wear depth was obtained due to combination of fine grain and comparatively high density.

  • Silicon alloys are considered promising anode active materials to replace Li-ion batteries by graphite powder, because they have a relatively high capacity of up to 4200 mAh/g, and are environmentally friendly and inexpensive ECO-materials. However, its poor charge/discharge properties, induced by cracking during cycles, constitute their most serious problem as anode electrode. In order to solve these problems, Si-Ge-Al alloys with porous structure are designed as anode alloy powders, to improve cycling stability. The alloys are melt-spun to obtain the rapidly solidified ribbons, and then ball-milled to make fine powders. The powders are etched using 1 M HCl solution, which gives the powders a porous structure by removing the element Al. Subsequently, in this study, the microstructures and the characteristics of the etched powders are evaluated for application as anode materials. As a result, the etched porous powder shows better electrochemical properties than as-milled Si-Ge-Al powder.

Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Oxide Dispersion Strengthened alloy Based on Commercially Pure Titanium (순수 타이타늄 기반 산화물분산강화 합금의 미세조직 및 기계적 특성)

  • This study is conducted as a preliminary research to verify the feasibility of Ti-based Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) alloy. Pure-Ti powder is mixed with $Y_2O_3$ powder and subsequently, mechanically alloyed at $-150^{\circ}C$. The Ti-based ODS powder is hot-isostatically pressed and subsequently hot-rolled for recrystallization. The microstructure consists of elongated grains and Y excess fine particles. The oxide particle size is larger than that of the typical Fe-based ODS steel. Tensile test shows that the tensile ductility is approximately 25%, while the strength is significantly higher than that of pure Ti. The high-temperature hardness of the Ti-ODS alloy is also significantly higher than that of pure Ti at all temperatures, while being lower than that of Ti-6Al-4V. The dimple structure is well developed, and no evidence of cleavage fracture surface is observed in the fracture surface of the tensile specimen.

  • Fine silica powders were synthesized via w/o emulsion method using sodium silicate, ammonium sulfate, Triton N-57, and cyclohexane as silica source, precipitating agent, surfactant, and oil phase, respectively. The powders were prepared under a conventional process and an ultrasonic process using the same reactants at room temperature for 1 hr varying the concentration of $Na_2SiO_3$ solution and the mol ratio of $H_2O$/surfactant, respectively. The particle size of the silica powder was reduced with decreasing the concentration of sodium silicate solution and with increasing the mol ratio of $H_2O$/surfactant under with and without ultrasounds. The size of powder with ultrasounds was smaller than that without ultrasounds, which indicates that the application of ultrasound in the synthesis of silica powder is an efficient way to reduce particle size.

  • After $SnO_2$ fine powder by precipitation method, Ca as crystallization inhibitor and Pd as catalyst were added to $SnO_2$ raw material by various methods. Thick film device was fabricated on the alumina substrate by mixing ethylene glycol and such mixed powders. The sensing characteristics of the device for methane gas were investigated. The most excellent gas sensing property was shown by the thick film device fabricated by Method 3 in which Ca and Pd doped $SnO_2$ powder is prepared by mixing $SnO_2$ powder, 0.1 wt% Ca acetate and 1 wt% $PdCl_2$ in deionized water and by calcining the mixture, after $Sn(OH)_4$ is dried at $110^{\circ}C$ for 36h. The sensitivity of the sensor fabricated with $SnO_2$-0.1 wt%Ca acetate-1wt%$PdCl_2$ powder heat-treated at $700^{\circ}C$ for 1h was about 86% for 5,000 ppm methane in air at $350^{\circ}C$ of the operating temperature. Response time and recovery were also excellent.

  • [ $YBa_2Cu_3Ox$ ](YBCO) oxide superconductor was prepared by sol-gel method to improve its superconducting properties, and it was made to be a fine powder, which has the same property of solid state reacted powder. $BaPbO_3$ was synthesized with $BaCO_3$, BaO, PbO, and $PbO_2$ and analyzed by XRD. YBCO superconductor was prepared by use of sol-gelled YBCO powder and additive $BaPbO_3$ and its critical temperature and transition temperature were shown as 91.9 K, 3.7 K respectively in case 20 wt.% $BaPbO_3$ was added to pure sol-gelled YBCO powder.
