  • Fine blanking can be considered as a manufacturing process capable of producing sheet metal parts with completely smooth edges that may be hardly obtained by conventional shear-cutting procedures. This fact, together with the considerable economic advantages offered by this process, has been responsible for the rapid acceptance of fine blanking throughout the manufacturing industry all over the world, and the discovery of many new applications. This study was performed to investigate the effect of clearance and V-ring shape on the quality of sheared surface in a fine blanking process. The critical value needed to apply the normalized Cockcroft-Latham fracture criterion to the simulation of fine blanking is obtained by correlating the result of finite element analysis and that of experiment for the uniaxial tensile test. From finite element analysis of an axisymmetric fine blanking process, it has been found that punch load, die-roll depth, burnish zone size and shape of sheared surface are considerably influenced by clearance and V-ring shape.

  • The aim of this study is to fabricate an ultra-fine pure rhodium wire using multi-pass wire drawing process. To manufacture $30{\mu}m$ ultra-fine rhodium wire from the initial $50{\mu}m$ wire, a multi-pass wire drawing process was designed based on the uniform reduction ratio theory. The elastic-plastic finite element analysis was then conducted to validate the efficacy of the designed process. The drawing load, drawing stress, and the distribution of the effective strain were evaluated using the finite element analysis. Finally, the wire drawing experiment was performed to validate the designed wire drawing process. From the results of the experiment, the diameter of the final drawn wire was found to be $29.85{\mu}m$.

  • A finite element analysis has been performed to investigate the effect of die clearance on shear planes in the fine blanking of a part of automobile safety belt. For the analysis, S45C is selected as an material, which is used in manufacturing the part of automobile safety belt, and Cockcroft-Latham fracture criterion is applied. Effect of die Clearance on die-roll width, die-roll depth, burnish zone, and fracture zone has been investigated in the finite element analysis by a rigid-plastic FEM code, DEFORM-2D. From the analysis, it has been found that die-roll depth and depth of the shear plane increase with increasing die clearance. And the burnish zone decreases with increasing die clearance, but the variation of fracture zone is opposite to that of burnish zone because the increase in die clearance requires less fracture energy. Theoretical predictions are compared with experimental results. There is a good agreement between theory and experiment.

  • Rhodium is a representative platinum group material. Rhodium is used in several industrial fields including jewelry, chemical reaction catalyst, electric component etc. In recently, ultra-fine rhodium wire has been applied to the pins of probe card used to test a semiconductor. In this study, in order to produce a fine rhodium wire with the diameter of $50{\mu}m$, a fine rhodium wire drawing process was designed. After design of the fine wire drawing process by using a uniform reduction ratio theory, finite element analysis was performed. Finally, fine wire drawing experiment was performed to verify the effectiveness of the designed process.

  • Blanking process is widely used fur producing various structural parts. However, fine blanking technology is frequently used as a single step blanking operation with clean cut surface of a sheared surface because the fractured surface of parts causes serious problems in the final product and therefore it must be removed by the post-processing in case of the conventional blanking. In the present investigation, a fine blanking process was designed within the framework of progressive die to produce a carrier plate assembled within the auto transmission. Finite element analysis of the shearing behavior at the respective stage of the progressive fine blanking was conducted to validate the designed die parameters. Finally the designed progressive fine blanking process was experimentally evaluated by using the machined die.

  • A finite element analysis has been performed to investigate the effect of v-ring indenter on the sheared surface in the fine blanking of a pawl which is a part of the automotive safety belt and is made of S45C sheet. In the present analysis the Cockcroft and latham fracture criterion and the element kill method are used in order to simulate the blanking operation successfully. The simulation results are obtained for various positions and heights of the v-ring indenter. And the theoretical results are compared with available experimental results. It is shown that this FEM simulation result can be useful for predicting the optimal fine blanking condition of real products.

  • In this paper, a multi-scale meshfree-enriched finite element formulation is presented for the analysis of acoustic wave propagation problem. The scale splitting in this formulation is based on the Variational Multi-scale (VMS) method. While the standard finite element polynomials are used to represent the coarse scales, the approximation of fine-scale solution is defined globally using the meshfree enrichments generated from the Generalized Meshfree (GMF) approximation. The resultant fine-scale approximations satisfy the homogenous Dirichlet boundary conditions and behave as the "global residual-free" bubbles for the enrichments in the oscillatory type of Helmholtz solutions. Numerical examples in one dimension and two dimensional cases are analyzed to demonstrate the accuracy of the present formulation and comparison is made to the analytical and two finite element solutions.

  • In this study, to achieve the optimal conditions for mechanical hyper-fine pattern fabrication process, deformation behavior of the materials during indentation was studied with numerical method by ABAQUS S/W. Polymer (PMMA) and brittle materials (Si, Pyrex glass) were used as specimens, and forming conditions to reduce the elastic recover and pile-up was proposed. The indenter was modeled a 3D rigid surface. Minimum mesh sizes of specimens are 1-10nm. Comparison between the experimental data and numerical result demonstrated that the finite element approach is capable of reproducing the loading-unloading behavior of a nanoindentation test. The result of the investigation will be applied to the fabrication of the hyper-fine pattern.

  • This study was performed to solve the breaking problem in the fine blanking(FB) process of sector gears for car seat recliner using nickel chrome molybdenum steel(SNCM220) plate. The optimal design of embossing circle is changed to oval with labors' experiences and finite element analysis. The maximum principal stress and effective strain in a forming process are analyzed by commercial finite element software to solve the problems in embossing stage of FB process. As a result of FE analysis, the maximum principal stress in forming is lower than yield point of material. It is shown from experiments in the modified die that the formed gear does not break in embossing stage.
