  • The purpose of this study was to survey the status of the operation of site-based environmental education(EE) programs. This study surveyed 165 schools and organizations that operated site-based EE program in 2000 using a mail questionnaire and interviews. The response rate was 43%. The result indicated that awareness, participation, and attitude were considerably addressed, while knowledge and skills were addressed to a lesser degree. There were some difficulties in motivating students and in considering the developmental stage of participants. For programing the site-based EE, financial support and expert knowledge of EE were needed most of all. Learning materials for various and hand-on activities were also needed. The affective domain, such as awareness and attitude, showed marked improvement in the outcomes of the programs. Direct experience and sensitivity, connection with school education, regional characteristics were sufficiently addressed in the programs, while cultural aspects, fairness, originality, and accuracy were not. Flexibility in performing the programs and less rigidity of report on operations were needed. Through the discussion of the results, some improvements for the operation of site-based EE program were suggested.

  • The purpose of the study is to review the evolutional process of the U.S. broiler industry into the integrated production and marketing systems and to examine the factors influenced such a structural change over the Past half a century. The study is also carried out under the consideration that the experience gained by the integrated U.S. broiler industry could be utilized in applying the system to any non-integrated broiler industries like one in Korea. The U.S. broiler industry has been prevailed in the typical independent operation of all stages, from factor supply through growing to dressing and marketing until such time as growers began to suffer from financial difficulties right after the end of the World Wat II due mainly to lowered price of broilers stemmed from whopping decrease of the demand, which eventually reflected to the allied agribusiness sectors. The feed business field was the first reactor to this situation so that a kind of measures was taken to cope with the problems faced in such a way to provide extended credit on feeds first and help obtain chicks or sell broilers later. This trend has been practiced for broiler related agribusiness through late 1940's to work together with growers by coordinating its function between two or more stages involved in broiler production and marketing process as a means of spreading risk and sharing profit between stages Participated. The integrated system and contract farming thus became Popular across the country through mid 1950's.

  • This study introduced "Dongchundang Eumsikbeop" and examined its value as a reference. "Dongchundang Eumsikbeop" is a recipe book from the Head House of Eunjin Song Clan. As the author is unknown, the book is named after where it was found. "Dongchundang Eumsikbeop" records the recipes for 32 total foods, including 12 types of fermented foods, eight types of liquor, and six types of side dishes, etc. In "Jusiksiui", written by the same clan 100 years before, fermented foods account for 15% of its contents. On the other hand, this book assigns 34% of its space to fermented foods. It is assumed that the recipe book must have been compiled according to what households ate the most, as hostesses had to cook for their households due to financial difficulties at the time. In "Dongchundang Eumsikbeop", baking soda and alum were used as leavening agents for confectionery while sugar-based caramelizing was used for making soy sources, implying that modern food techniques were already applied. In short, this book provides a glimpse into the wisdom of hostesses of the Head House who improved recipes to suit changing times while adhering to tradition.

  • The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how divorced mothers had decided to take custody of their children and became single mothers. The experiences of their lives after divorce were also explored. Data were collected from 17 Korean divorced mothers who were divorced between 2004 and 2009, and were raising at least one minor child. The data were analyzed based on the phenomenological data analysis method. Three main themes were identified: (a) reasons for deciding to have physical custody of the children, (b) mothers' experiences of adjustment after divorce, and (c) mothers' need for a policy concerning the well-being of their families. According to the divorced mothers, they decided to have physical custody of the children since they believed raising children was their natural duty of mothers or they were the most appropriate ones to raise the children rather than the fathers. While the mothers were satisfied with their lives after divorce in general, they also experienced difficulties including child care and financial strain. In particular, most mothers experienced work-family conflict related to the lack of reliable child care. When their family lives and work lives collided, the mothers put their children first and chose jobs that helped them take care of their children at the same time. The divorced single mothers hoped that the social safety net for single parents would expand to support their independence. Implications for single-parent policy are discussed.

  • This study was conducted to make a policy proposal for Korean grandparent-grandchildren families, analyzing what adversities adolescent grandchildren suffer when living in a grandparent-grandchild family, the types of Korean families and how family resilience appears as family power. In order to conduct this study, 20 consenting adolescents were selected for an interview from grandparent-grandchildren families recommended by the U City Healthy Family Support Center. This study suggests the following conclusions. First, we discussed divorce, death, financial bankruptcy related stress, economic difficulties in the present family, accidents involving family members of a grandparent-grandchild family, grandparents' serious disease, death, family conflicts and family comparisons with friends. Second, in the domain of family resilience, desire to maintain the family appeared as a Korean value. In addition, efforts to bond as an emotional family and grandchildren's attitudes of gratitude to grandparents are also expressed. However, family conversation appears weak due to the generation gap between adolescents and grandparents or complications from family stress. Third, the resilience in the family organization appeared weak since there are relatively insufficient socio-economic resources to support the family. This study makes several suggestions for family policies and shows the necessity to develop policies that reflect the needs of grandchildren and grandparents.
