A water reuse system was designed for a demonstration plant by combining fiber filtration and electrolysis. A discharged dye wastewater after treated with biomedia was used in this study. It was found that an additional removal of suspended solids (SS) was feasible with 2-stage filtration while electrolysis was not effective. Also, $COD_{cr}$ and $COD_{Mn}$ were not removed with 2 -stage filtration but electrolysis resulted in about 26.9% additional removal. This indicates that electrolysis play an important role in organic removal. Removal of T-N and T-P was negligible with 1 and 2-stage fiber filtration and low-level electrolyte. However, with 2000 ppm of electrolyte, their removal efficiencies were about 83.1 and 60%, respectively, suggesting that the removal rates are well associated with the electrolyte concentrations. With high-level electrolyte, colority was removed about 82% while chlorine ions were removed only about 10%. Therefore, to treat underground water containing high-level salinity in the follow-up study, based on the results in this paper, a combined system with selection of additional unit process and reverse osmosis will be designed.

Ultrasonic wave technology was employed to improve filtration performance and ethanol production in a bioreactor equipped with an internal ceramic-membrane filter module. The filtration performance was found to depend on the power and the pattern of ultrasonic wave irradiation. Under the optimized conditions (irradiation time: 25 see, period: 5 min, and ultrasonic power: 60 W), the flux was improved with the periodic-pause method by 200-700% compared with the control (with no irradiation), while the improvement was only 30 to 90% without the periodic-pause method. The final ethanol concentration also increased slightly. However, in a more severe condition (irradiation time: 2.5 min, period: 5 min, and ultrasonic power: 110 W), the irradiation of ultrasonic waves was observed to disturb cell integrity and viability, and thus to decrease ethanol production.

Field study was carried out to assess the effect of automatic inlet and filtration outlet to reduce non-point source discharge and save agricultural irrigation water from paddy. The comparison of control and treated plots showed that irrigation water was saved up to 58 mm and discharge water was reduced up to 110 mm. The filtration outlet improved the discharge water quality for SS, COD, TN and TP up to 60.1 %, 0.1 %, 4.5 %, and 26.0 %, respectively. Overall, the findings of this study indicated that non-point source pollution discharged from paddy fields where automatic inlet and filtration outlet were installed could be reduced 266.3 kg/ha/yr in SS, 10.3 kg/ha/yr in COD, 1.22 kg/ha/yr in TN, and 0.10 kg/ha/yr in TP, respectively. This clearly showed that the automatic inlet and filtration outlet are effective management method for saving of agricultural water and protecting water environment.
This study was performed to describe the influence of water temperature and salinity on the filtration rate of the hard clam, Meretrix petechialis. The filtration rates of hard clams showed significant differences depending on both water temperature and age group (two-way ANOVA, p < 0.001). The filtration rate of all the hard clams, aged from 1 to 4 years, was generally reduced in low temperature range ( $5-15^{\circ}C$). As the water temperature increased, the filtration rate increased exponentially. The filtration rate was relatively high in $20-30^{\circ}C$ water temperature range, but rapidly decreased again at around $35^{\circ}C$. Variations in the data for filtration rates of hard clams, relative to age and changing water temperature, were used to determine the temperature coefficient $Q_{10}$ in each water temperature range. In $5-15^{\circ}C$ temperature range, every age group showed the highest $Q_{10}$ figure. It was found that on the whole, the higher the water temperature was, the lower the number of $Q_{10}$ was. Regardless of age, the number of $Q_{10}$ was higher in the lower water temperature range. In $25-35^{\circ}C$ temperature range, the number of $Q_{10}$ was less than 1.00 in all age groups, implying that this is the range in which the filtration rate decreased. Variations in the filtration rate also showed very clear differences (two-way ANOVA, p < 0.001) according to changing salinity and age. All the age groups, from 1 to 4 year olds, showed low filtration rates at both low salinity (10-15 psu) and high salinity (40 psu). The highest filtration rate was recorded at 30 psu, and relatively high filtration rates were found around 30 psu. However, the Student-Newman-Keuls post hoc multiple comparison test found that the hard clams in the 1-year group showed high filtration rates in a relatively narrower salinity range compared to those in the 2, 3, and 4 year groups. In other words, hard clams in the 2, 3, and 4 year groups showed high filtration rates at higher levels of salinity.
Background: The recent COVID-19 pandemic is one of the worst disease outbreaks of the 21th century. Due to a lack of reliable antiviral therapeutics, wearing face masks is recommended to prevent airborne infection originating from virus-contaminated bioaerosols. Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the filtration efficiencies of face masks that are commercially available in South Korea for a biological aerosol of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and murine coronavirus, a well-known surrogate for human coronaviruses. Methods: We collected six different kinds of commercial masks: two Korea Filter (KF)94 (KF94-1, KF94-2) masks, one surgical (Surgical-1) mask, one anti-droplet (KF-AD-1) mask, and two dust (Dust-1, Dust-2) face masks. S. aureus (ATCC 6538), a well-performing test bacteria and murine coronavirus (ATCC VR-764) were prepared under a suitable culture condition. Then, a mask biological filtration tester was used to examine the microbial filtration efficiencies of masks. Test microorganisms were quantitatively measured via cultivation methods and microbial filtration efficiencies were calculated appropriately. Results: All face masks showed over 99.6% filtration efficiency for S. aureus or murine coronavirus. There were no significant differences among the bacterial filtration efficiencies of the face masks. KF94-1 (99.97±0.08%) and Dust-1 mask (99.97±0.07%) showed the highest (over 99.9%) filtration efficiency for murine coronavirus. KF94-1 or Dust-1 masks showed a significant virus filtration efficiency compared to Surgical-1 mask (p<0.05; Mann-Whitney U test). Conclusions: All the commercially available face masks used in this study can filter S. aureus or murine coronavirus in bioaerosols efficiently, regardless of the mask type. Therefore, our results suggest that wearing a certified face mask is a reliable means to prevent the transmission of infectious airborne diseases via biological aerosols.

This research is focused on coagulation and sand filtration process as a pretreatment of RO seawater desalination. RO systems require sufficient and reliable pretreatment process to produce superior quality of RO feedwater that can mitigate RO membrane fouling. This experiment was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of coagulation and filtration process under various experimental conditions including different coagulant dose, flocculation mixing intensity and time, turbidity, and filtration rate. The experimental results showed that the optimum pretreatment conditions resulting in lower SDI value suitable for RO feedwater were coagulation pH 6.5, raw water turbidity greater than 4 NTU, and media bed depth greater than 550 mm. However, flocculation mixing intensity, coagulant dose, and filtration rate relatively affected little on the filtration efficiency.
This study aimed for developing a two stage dual media filtration system. It has a sand and activated carbon layer above the under-drain system, and a sand layer above the middle-drain system for pretreatment. When retrofitting an old sand filter bed or designing a new one, this technology can substitute the existing sand filter bed without requiring a new plant site. The removal rate of total particle is 93, and 3~7 ${\mu}m$ and 5~15 ${\mu}m$ particles are all 97%. These high removal efficiencies of each pollutant due to adsorption and biological oxidation in activated carbon filter layer. The best backwashing method of two stage dual media filtration system is ascertained by air injection, air + water injection and water injection sequence. In this study, a pilot plant of two stage and dual filtration system was operated for 4 months in water treatment plant. The stability of turbidity was maintained below 1 NTU. The TOC, THMFP and HAAFP were removed about 90% by two stage and dual media filtration system, which is almost 2 times higher than existing water treatment plant.
Cost-effective microalgae harvesting methods are necessary for economical production of algal biodiesel. In this study, membranes with various pore sizes and materials were examined for their potentials in application to gravity-filtration of Tetraselmis sp. KCTC12432BP. For this test, 10 L of Tetraselmis sp. culture (2 g/L) was loaded on each membrane and filtration rates were measured. Among the tested materials, a woven cotton fabric showed the fastest water drain rate (0.73 L/hr) without serious cell leakage. Cell density of the concentrates after filtration was 6.8 g/L, indicating 3.4-fold concentration compared with the initial algal culture. The result suggests that the woven cotton fabric could serve as filtration membrane for harvesting Tetraselmis sp. among the tested ones.

An understanding of particle-particle interactions in filtration requires studying the detachment as well as the attachment of nanoparticles. Nanoparticles captured in a granular media filter can be released by changing the physicochemical factors. In this study, the detachment of captured silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in granular media filtration was examined under different ionic strengths, ion type, and the presence or absence of natural organic matter (NOM). Filtration velocity and ionic strength were chosen as the physical and chemical factors to cause the detachment. Increasing filtration velocity caused a negligible amount of AgNP detachment. On the other hand, lowering ionic strength showed different release amounts depending on the background ions, implying a population of loosely captured particles inside the filter bed. Overall detachment was affected by ionic strength and ion type, and to a lesser degree by NOM coating which resulted in slightly more detachment (in otherwise identical conditions) than in the absence of that coating, possibly by steric effects. The secondary energy minimum with Na ions was deeper and wider than with Ca ions, probably due to the lack of complexation with citrate and charge neutralization that would be caused by Ca ions. This result implies that the change in chemical force by reducing ionic strength of Na ions could significantly enhance the detachment compared to that caused by a change in physical force, due to a weak electrostatic deposition between nanoparticles and filter media. A modification of the 1-D filtration model to incorporate a detachment term showed good agreement with experimental data; estimating the detachment coefficients for that model suggested that the detachment rate could be similar regardless of the amount of previously captured AgNPs.
Riverbank filtration for water supply has been employed for about 150 years in developed countries. In Korea, the feasibility of riverbank filtration has been investigated since 1990's for large river basins, to find a solution to stably meet the ever-increasing demand for water. Recently, some cites in the Nak-dong River Basin have been supplying the water through riverbank filtration. This research studies the feasibility of riverbank filtration in Seoul. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), which selects the most optimal alternative by hierarchically classifying various attributes and then quantifying the importance of each attribute, was applied to candidate locations for the selection of riverbank filtration site. The Kwangnaru district, which has advantages in water quality and close connectivity to the existing water purification facility, was selected as the most optimal site.
