A comparative study of granular activated carbon and sand as water filtration media with estimation of model parameters

  • The use of Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) and naturally occurring silica (Sand) as filtration media in water and waste water treatment systems is very common. While GAC offers the additional functionality of being an "adsorptive" filter for dissolved organics it is also more expensive. In this paper we present an experimental evaluation of the performance of a bed of GAC for colloid removal and compare the same with that from an equivalent bed of Sand. The experiments are performed in an "intermittent" manner over extended time, to "simulate" performance over the life of the filter bed. The experiments were continued till a significant drop in water flow rate through the bed was observed. A novel "deposition" and "detachment" rate based transient mathematical model is developed. It is observed that the data from the experiments can be explained by the above model, for different aqueous phase electrolyte concentrations. The model "parameters", namely the "deposition" and "detachment" rates are evaluated for the 2 filter media studied. The model suggests that the significantly better performance of GAC in colloid filtration is probably due to significantly lower detachment of colloids from the same. While the "deposition" rates are higher for GAC, the "detachment" rates are significantly lower, which makes GAC more effective than sand for colloid removal by over an order of magnitude.

살수여상에서의 질소, 인 제거 미생물 분포 및 질산화 활성 조사 (Analysis on the distribution of nitrogen and phosphorus removing microorganisms and nitrifying activity in a trickling filter)

  • Trickling filter has been extensively studied for the domestic wastewater treatment especially for the small scale plants in rural area. The performance of the trickling filter depends on the microbial community and their activity in the biofilms on the media. Nitrification. denitrification, and phosphorus removal of the trickling filter from the wastewater depend on the activity and the amount of the specific microorganisms responsible for the metabolism. For the estimation of the performance of a trickling filter, batch nitrification experiment and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) were carried out to measure the microbial activity and its distribution on the media of the trickling filter. Batch nitrification activity measurement showed that the top part of the 1st stage trickling filter had the highest nitrification activity and the maximum activity was 0.002 g $NH_4$-N/g MLVSS${\cdot}$h. It is thought that higher substrate (ammonia) concentration yields more nitrifying bacteria in the biofilms. The dominant ammonia oxidizer and nitrite oxidizer in the biofilm were Nitrosomonas species and genus Nitrospira, respectively, by FISH analysis. Less denitrifiers were found than nitrifiers in the biofilm by the probe Rrp1088 which specifically binds to Rhodobacter, Rhodovulum, Roseobacter, and Paracoccus. Phosphorus accumulating bacteria were mostly found at the surface of the biofilm by probe Rc988 and PAO651 which specifically binds to Rhodocyclus group and their biomass was less than that of nitrifiers.

정수처리장내 급속모래 여과지의 이단복합여과시스템으로의 개량 (Improvement of Rapid Sand Filtration to Two Stage Dual Media Filtration System in Water Treatment Plant)

  • This study aimed for developing a two stage dual media filtration system. It has a sand and activated carbon layer above the under-drain system, and a sand layer above the middle-drain system for pretreatment. When retrofitting an old sand filter bed or designing a new one, this technology can substitute the existing sand filter bed without requiring a new plant site. The removal rate of total particle is 93, and 3~7 ${\mu}m$ and 5~15 ${\mu}m$ particles are all 97%. These high removal efficiencies of each pollutant due to adsorption and biological oxidation in activated carbon filter layer. The best backwashing method of two stage dual media filtration system is ascertained by air injection, air + water injection and water injection sequence. In this study, a pilot plant of two stage and dual filtration system was operated for 4 months in water treatment plant. The stability of turbidity was maintained below 1 NTU. The TOC, THMFP and HAAFP were removed about 90% by two stage and dual media filtration system, which is almost 2 times higher than existing water treatment plant.

Detachment of nanoparticles in granular media filtration

  • An understanding of particle-particle interactions in filtration requires studying the detachment as well as the attachment of nanoparticles. Nanoparticles captured in a granular media filter can be released by changing the physicochemical factors. In this study, the detachment of captured silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in granular media filtration was examined under different ionic strengths, ion type, and the presence or absence of natural organic matter (NOM). Filtration velocity and ionic strength were chosen as the physical and chemical factors to cause the detachment. Increasing filtration velocity caused a negligible amount of AgNP detachment. On the other hand, lowering ionic strength showed different release amounts depending on the background ions, implying a population of loosely captured particles inside the filter bed. Overall detachment was affected by ionic strength and ion type, and to a lesser degree by NOM coating which resulted in slightly more detachment (in otherwise identical conditions) than in the absence of that coating, possibly by steric effects. The secondary energy minimum with Na ions was deeper and wider than with Ca ions, probably due to the lack of complexation with citrate and charge neutralization that would be caused by Ca ions. This result implies that the change in chemical force by reducing ionic strength of Na ions could significantly enhance the detachment compared to that caused by a change in physical force, due to a weak electrostatic deposition between nanoparticles and filter media. A modification of the 1-D filtration model to incorporate a detachment term showed good agreement with experimental data; estimating the detachment coefficients for that model suggested that the detachment rate could be similar regardless of the amount of previously captured AgNPs.

Bioscrubber Trickling Filter(BSTF)의 VOCs 제거 및 운전 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Removal Efficiency of VOCs and Operating Characteristics by Using of Bioscrubber Trickling Filter(BSTE))

  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odor materials are major sources of air pollution in Ulsan city, where much chemical plants are located. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new reactor which can remove VOCs and odor materials effectively and be equipped at the end of pipe easily. A modified reactor (bioscrubber trickling filter, BSTF), which have both characteristics of biofilter and bioscrubber, was developed and tested on its reactivity with several VOCs using two types of media, fiber and activated carbon 4- ceramic(A/C). It was observed that the removal efficiencies of several types of VOCs such as acetaldehyde, ethylalcohol, butanol, diethylamine and triethylamine were up to $95\%$ when they had about 100 ppm of initial concentration and 80 seconds of residence time. Good attachment of microorganisms to both media, where it is thought the reaction efficiency can be determined according to the amount of microorganisms attachment, observed with scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Initial pressure drops of the packed bed with both media were 229 $mmH_2O/m$ at A/C column and 670 $mmH_2O/m$, respectively. However, maximum pressure drop of fiber column during the operation was over 1,647 $mmH_2O/m$. Therefore, it was thought that the fiber material would not suitable to use in the local plant as a packed bed media.

  • In this paper, a synthesis method for the desired scattering pattern is presented when illuminating by TE-polarized and TM-polarized plane waves to arbitrary dielectric material. It is considered that the one-dimensional dielectric media are inhomogeneously distributed with continuously varying dielectric constants. Accordingly the desired patterns and the corresponding source distributions are inversely transformed by the proposed algorithm which are based on the one-dimensional inverse scattering problem. Some bandstop spatial filter are illustrated for applications.

강우유출수 처리시설 침투특성에 대한 필터여재 파쇄의 영향 (Effects of Media Breakage on Infiltration Characteristics in Stormwater Management System)

  • 강우유출수 비점오염 침투처리시설에 사용되는 모래와 제올라이트 필터에서 여재 파쇄가 침투에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 여재 파쇄의 원인으로 다짐에너지와 침투력의 영향을 검토하였다. 여재 파쇄가 침투에 미치는 영향을 조사하기 위해 비다짐 및 다짐 침투층에 대한 일차원 컬럼 침투시험을 수행하였다. 시험결과로부터 다음 결론을 얻었다. 1) 침투력에 의한 여재 파쇄량은 상대적으로 적은 것으로 분석되었다. 2) 다짐여재와 비교하여 비다짐여재는 파쇄량이 적고 침투에 따른 투수성 변화도 작다. 3) 부유오염물을 함유하지 않는 침투수가 침투하는 경우에도 파쇄된 여재의 재배열, 재이동이 원인으로 추정되는 투수성 감소가 발생하였다. 4) 여재 파쇄의 영향만을 고려한다면 필터 재료로서 모래의 적용성이 제올라이트 보다 양호함을 확인했다.

  • This work presents experimental results of filter media test by using particles from $0.02\;to\;0.6{\mu}m$ in diameter and by applying different charging states. In order to investigate the electret filter performance, the collection efficiency and the pressure drop of filter were measured. The face velocities of test filters varied from 2.4 to 20.4 cm/s. Another experiment setup for the cartridge cabin air filter was used to get an collection efficiency in submicron region. After charging level of electret filter severely decreased, the change of collection efficiency was verified. Experimental results show that the reliability of electret filters can be poor in some conditions.

  • Visual organs play an important role in human information recognition processes. If they are expressed in a way of digital information, it makes much bigger amount of visual information among any other information. For that reason, MPEG-2 has been taken use of to represent information compressing technology in multi-media. Although the imported data would basically contain noises, when original video images are encoded into MPET-2. Accordingly, we propose soft- $\alpha$ filter to improve image quality of digital image received from the actual image and to reduce noises from them. We also propose a method combining vertical/horizontal filter and soft- $\alpha$ filter on MPEG-2 video image. We can get two kinds of effects from the advantages of this kind of combination. Firstly, it will reduce processing time ducting horizontal and vetical filtering process. It will cover time for soft- $\alpha$ filter. Secondly, it will simplify the colors in horizontal and vertical filter. Therefore we can get clearer quality without noises from soft- $\alpha$ filter.
