The biotin-avidin complex, as a model recognition system, has been constructed through N-hydroxysuccinimide(NHS) reaction on a variety of substrates such as a smooth Au film, electrochemically roughened Au electrode and chemically modified mica. Stepwise self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of biotin-avidin system were characterized by surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and surface plasmon resonance (SPR). A strong SERRS signal of rhodamine tags labeled in avidin from the SAMs on a roughened gold electrode indicated the successful complex formation of stepwise biotin-avidin recognition system. AFM images showed the circular shaped avidin aggregates (hexamer) with ca. $60{\AA}$ thick on the substrate, corresponding to one layer of avidin. The surface coverage and concentration of avidin molecules were estimated to be 90% and $7.5{\times}10^{-12}mol/cm^2$, respectively. SPR technique allowed one to monitor the surface reaction of the specific recognition with high sensitivity and precision.
High quality ZnO:Al films were prepared on glass substrates by in-line RF magnetron sputtering and their surface morphologies were modified by wet-etching process in dilute acid solution to improve optical properties for application to silicon thin film solar cells as front electrode. The as-deposited films show a strong preferred orientation in [001] direction under our experimental conditions. A low resistivity below $5{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ and high optical transmittance above 80% in a visible range are achieved in the films deposited at optimized conditions. After wet-etching, the surface morphologies of the films are changed dramatically depending on the deposition conditions, especially working pressure. The optical properties such as total/diffuse transmittance, haze and angular resolved distribution of light are varied significantly with the surface morphology feature, whereas the electrical properties are seldom changed. The cell performances of silicon thin film solar cells fabricated on the textured films are also evaluated in detail with comparison of commercial $SnO_2$:F films.
3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde(3,4-DHB) was oxidatively el electropolymerized on glassy carbon (GC) electrodes to prepare CC/p-3,4-DHB type electrodes, which were subsequently modified with 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid(3,4-DHBA) using 0.05M HCI as a catalyst. The esterification reactions were performed between -OH sites on the polymeric film surface of the p-3,4-DHB and the -COOH sites within the 3,4-DHBA molecules in solution. These reactions had a rate constant value of $1.1\times10^{-1}\;s^{-1}$ for the esterification step as obtained from the first-order rate constant in the solution. The electrochemical responses of the GC/p-3,4-DHB-3,4-DHBA electrodes exert an influence upon the buffer solution, its pH and applied potential ranges. The redox process of the electrode was more easily controlled by charge transfer kinetics than that of the CC/p-3,4-DHB. The modified electrodes had redox active sites that were 10 times more active than those present before modification. The electrical admittance of the modified electrodes was also three times higher than that of the unmodified electrodes. After being annealed in ethanol for 20 hrs the electrodes brought about a 3.3 times greater change of water molecules in the redox reaction. The modified electrodes are stable in the potential range of 0.4 to 0.55V.
To electropolymerize Polypyrrole(ppy) film modified with fullerene $ions(full^-)$ the cell, Au/5 mM pyrrole, 1mM fullerene, 0.1M $TBABF_4,\;CH_2Cl_2/Pt$, was employed to Prepare the wafer-like type of $electrode/ppy(full^-)ppy(full^-){\ldots}$ electrodes. They were applied to deposit alkali metal ions with the cell of Au(quartz crystal analyzer; QCA)/ppy$(full^-)$, 0.01M metal ion(aq.)/Pt. The depositing rate constant of each ion for $Li^+,\;Na^+,\;K^+,\;Rb^+\;and\;Cs^+$, determined from the first order equation was $1.60\times10^{-8},\;3.13\times10^{-11},\;1.38\times10^{-9},\;2.71\times10^{-11}\;and\;2.98\times10^{-12}mo1.s^{-1}$ respectively. The calculated stoichiometry of the ions determined by quartz crystal microbalance(QCM) at the electrodes was $Li_7C_{60},\;Na_4C_{60},\;K_3C_{60},\;Rb_1C_{60}\;and\;Cs_1C_{60}$ respectively.
When reformer for fuel cell is used, CO in hydrogen gas leads to a seriously decreased membrane electrode assembly (MEA) performance by catalyst poisoning. The effect of CO on performance of modified MEA by sputtering method is studied in this paper. The experimental results show that sputtered Pt and Ru thin film improve a single cell performance of MEA and sputtered metal thin film has a CO tolerance. The air injection process on anode show improved CO tolerance test result. Moreover, Pt, Ru and PtRu thin film by sputtering had influence on the CO tolerance with air injection process.
Trace analysis of Cd and Pb at surface modified thick film graphite electrode with Bi nanopowder has been carried out using square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) technique. Bi nanopowder synthesized by gas condensation (GC) method showed the size of $50{\sim}100$ nm with BET surface area, $A_{BET}=6.8m^{2}g^{-l}$. For a strong adhesion of the Bi nanopowder onto the screen printed carbon paste electrode, nafion solution was added into Bi-containing suspension. From the SWASV, it was found that the Bi nanopowder electrode exhibited a well-defined responses relating to the oxidations of Cd and Pb. The current peak intensity increased with increasing concentration of Cd and Pb. From the linear relationship between Cd/Pb concentrations and peak current, the sensitivity of the Bi nanopowder electrode was quantitatively estimated. The detection limit of the electrode was estimated to be $0.15{\mu}g/l$ and $0.07{\mu}g/l$ for Cd and Pb, respectively, on the basis of the signal-to-noise characteristics (S/N=3) of the response for the $1.0{\mu}g/l$ solution under a 10 min accumulation.

This paper presents the fabrication and characterization of carbon films pyrolyzed with various photoresists for bioMEMS applications. To verify the usefulness of pyrolyzed carbon films as an electrode material in an electrochemical biosensor developed by the authors, interactions between avidin and biotin on the pyrolyzed carbon film were studied via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy based on electrostatic interactions between avidin and negatively-charged ferricyanide. The pyrolyzed carbon films were characterized using a surface profiler, a precision semiconductor parameter analyzer, a nanoindentor, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Amine conjugated biotin was immobilized on the electrode using EDC/NHS as crosslinkers after $O_2$ plasma treatment to enhance functional groups on the carbon electrode pyrolyzed at $1000^{\circ}C$ with AZ9260. The detection of avidin binding with different concentrations in a range of 0.75 nM to $7.5\;{\mu}M$ to the pyrolyzed carbon electrode modified with biotin was carried out by measuring the electrochemical impedance change. The results show that avidin binds to the biotin on the electrode not by non-specific interaction but by specific interaction, and that EIS successfully detects this binding event. Pyrolyzed carbon films are a promising material for miniaturization, integration, and low-cost fabrication in electrochemical biosensors.

We attempted to fabricate a new type of magneto optic spatial light modulator (MO-SLM) for multiple-tone modulation by using in-plane magnetization. In the MO-SLM, magnetic property of magneto-optical layer was modified to be suitable for multiple-tone expression by substituting Al in Bi:YIG film. At a driving current to 28 mA in an electrode of the fabricated MO-SLM, changes in brightness of pixels were observed using a polarization microscope.

We show that the electrical properties of organic thinfilm transistors(OTFTs) can be enhanced by controlling the morphology of interface between screen printed electrodes and gate dielectrics. Modified surface of the insulator layer($SiO_2$) affect on the interface energy of electrode on $SiO_2$ layer. Contact angle measurement and FT-IR spectrum shows that the interface is properly modified. OTFTs device with high efficiency has been realized through modification of interface layer.
This is a report on the fabrication of a flexible OTFT backplane for electrophoretic display (EPD) using a printing technology. A practical printing technology for a polycarbonate substrate was developed by combining the conventional screen and inkjet printing technologies with the wet etching and oxygen plasma processes. For the gate electrode, the screen printing technology with Ag ink was developed to define the minimum line width of ${\sim}5{\mu}m$ and the thickness of ${\sim}70nm$ with the resistivity of ${\sim}10^{-6}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$, which are suitable for displays with SVGA resolution. For the source and drain (S/D) electrodes, PEDOT:PSS, whose conductivity was drastically enhanced to 450 S/cm by adding 10 wt% glycerol, was adopted. In addition, the modified PEDOT:PSS could be neatly confined in the specific S/D electrode area that had been pretreated with oxygen. The OTFTs that made use of the developed printing technology produced a mobility of ${\sim}0.13cm^2/Vs.ec$ and an on/off current ratio of ${\sim}10^6$, which are comparable to those using thermally evaporated Au for the S/D electrode.
