We report on the photoalignment process of pentacene thin film with optical anisotropy on treated buffer layers. The photopolymer, showing an anchoring transition, was used as a buffer layer to control the structural order of the pentacene molecules. Using the photoelastic modulator, it was found that the grain size and the optical anisotropy of the pentacene thin film were strongly correlated with each other.
Soft ferromagnetic materials are utilized for various electromagnetic devices such as magnetic recording heads and magnetic shielding. In situ observation of magnetic microstructures and domain wall motions are prerequisite for understanding and improving their magnetic properties. In this work, by the Fresnel (out-of-focus) method of Lorentz microscopy, we observe the domain wall motions of polycrystalline Ni/Ti thin film layers triggered by single-shot laser pulse. Random motions of domain walls were visualized at every single pulse.
Organic electroluminescent (EL) device was fabricated with Alq$_3$ as an emitting material and PDPMA ultra thin film prepared by Langmuir-Boldgett technique as a polymer hole transport layer. A stable condensed PDPMA monolayer was obtained using arachidic acid as a surface active material. The thickness and absorbance of PDPMA LB film increased line-arly with the layer numbers. The organic multilayered device consisted of ITO/PDPMA LB film (19 layers)/Alq$_3$/Al emitted green light with brightness of 2500 cd/m$^2$ at a DC 14 V Especially, the drive voltage of EL device having PDPMA LB film of 15 layers exhibited the value as low as 4 V. The effects of thickness control and molecular orientation in the PDPMA LB film on EL performance were discussed.

The wettability of TiO2 layers is controlled by forming highly ordered arrays of nanocones using nanopatterning, based on self-assembly and dry etching. Nanopatterning of TiO2 layers is achieved via formation of self-assembled monolayers of SiO2 spheres fabricated using the Langmuir-Blodgett technique, followed by dry etching. Compared to a thin film TiO2 layer, the nanopatterned TiO2 samples show a smaller static water contact angle, where the water contact angle decreases as the etching time increases, which is attributed to the Wenzel equation. When TiO2 layers are coated by 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltrichlorosilane, we observed the opposite behavior, exhibiting superhydrophobicity (up to contact angle of $155^{\circ}$) on the nanopatterned TiO2 layers. Self-assembled nanopatterning of the TiO2 layer may provide an advanced method for producing multifunctional transparent layers with self-cleaning properties.

One of the critical issues for applications of flexible organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) for flexible electronic systems is the electrical stabilities of the OTFT devices, including variation of the current on/off ratio ($I_{on}/I_{off}$), leakage current, threshold voltage, and hysteresis, under repetitive mechanical deformation. In particular, repetitive mechanical deformation accelerates the degradation of device performance at the ambient environment. In this work, electrical stabilities of the pentacene organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) employing multi-stack hybrid encapsulation layers were investigated under mechanical cyclic bending. Flexible bottom-gated pentacene-based OTFTs fabricated on flexible polyimide substrate with poly-4-vinyl phenol (PVP) dielectric as a gate dielectric were encapsulated by the plasma-deposited organic layer and atomic layer deposited inorganic layer. For cyclic bending experiment of flexible OTFTs, the devices were cyclically bent up to $10^5$ times with 5mm bending radius. In the most of the devices after $10^5$ times of bending cycles, the off-current of the OTFT with no encapsulation layers was quickly increased due to increases in the conductivity of the pentacene caused by doping effects from $O_2$ and $H_2O$ in the atmosphere, which leads to decrease in the $I_{on}/I_{off}$ and increase in the hysteresis. With encapsulation layers, however, the electrical stabilities of the OTFTs were improved significantly. In particular, the OTFTs with multi-stack hybrid encapsulation layer showed the best electrical stabilities up to the bending cycles of $10^5$ times compared to the devices with single organic encapsulation layer. Changes in electrical properties of cyclically bent OTFTs with encapsulation layers will be discussed in detail.

Nowadays, Active Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (AM-OLEDs) are the superior display device due to their vivid full color, perfect video capability, light weight, low driving power, and potential flexibility. One of the advantages of AM-OLED over Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) lies in its flexibility. The potential flexibility of AM-OLED is not fully explored due to its sensitivity to moisture and oxygen which are readily present in atmosphere, and there are no flexible encapsulation layers available to protect these. Therefore, we come up with a new concept of Inorganic-Organic hybrid thin film as the encapsulation layer. Our Inorganic layer is Al2O3 and Organic layer is F-Alucone. We deposited these layers in vacuum state using Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) and Molecular Layer Deposition (MLD) techniques. We found the results are comparable to commercial requirement of 10-6 g/m2 day for Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR). Using ALD and MLD, we can control the exact thin film thickness and fabricate more dense films than chemical or physical vapor deposition methods. Moreover, this hybrid encapsulation layer potentially has both the flexibility of organic layers and superior protection properties of inorganic layer.
Time-of-flight impact-collision ion scattering spectroscopy (TOF-ICISS) using 2 keV $He^+$ ion was applied to study the geometrical structure of the $BaTiO_3$ thin film which was grown on the MgO(100) surface. Hetero-epitaxial $BaTiO_3$ layers were formed on the MgO(100) surface by thermal evaporation of titanium followed first by oxidation at $400^{\circ}C$, subsequently by barium evaporation, and finally by annealing at $800^{\circ}C$. The atomic structure of $BaTiO_3$ layers was investigated by the scattering intensity variation of $He^+$ ions on TOF-ICISS and by the patterns of reflection high energy electron diffraction. The scattered ion intensity was measured along the <001> and <011> azimuth varying the incident angle. Our investigation revealed that perovskite structured $BaTiO_3$ layers were grown with a larger lattice parameter than that of the bulk phase on the MgO(100) surface.

A SPICE-based 3-dimensional circuit model of LED(Light-Emitting Diode) was developed for the design optimization and analysis of high-brightness LEDs. An LED is represented as an array of pixel LEDs with small preassigned areas, and each of the pixel LEDs is composed of circuit networks representing the thin-film layers(n-metal, n- and p-type semiconductor layers, and p-metal), ohmic contacts, and pn-junctions. Each of the thin-film layers and contact resistances is modeled by a resistance network, and the pn-junction is modeled by a conventional pn-junction diode. It has been found that the simulation results using the model and the corresponding parameters precisely fit the measured LED characteristics.

Graphene has generated significant interest in the recent years as a functional material for electronics, sensing, and energy applications due to its unique electrical, optical, and mechanical properties. Much of the considerable interest in graphene stems from results obtained for samples mechanically exfoliated from graphite. Practical applications, however, require reliable and well-controlled methods for fabrication of large area graphene films. Recently high quality graphene layers were fabricated using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on nickel and copper with methane as the source of the carbon atoms. Here, we report a simple and efficient method to synthesize graphene layers using solid carbon source. Few-layer graphene films are grown using filtered vacuum arc source (FVAS) technique by evaporation of carbon atom on Ni catalytic metal and subsequent annealing of the samples at 800$^{\circ}$C. In our system, carbon atoms diffuse into the Ni metal layer at elevated temperatures followed by their segregation as graphene on the free surface during the cooling down step as the solubility of carbon in the metal decrease. For a given annealing condition and cooling rate, the number of graphene layers is easily controlled by changing the thickness of the initially evaporated amorphous carbon film. Based on the Raman analysis, the quality of graphene is comparable to other synthesis methods found in the literature, such as CVD and chemical methods.

Heteromagnetic nanostructures, which consist of two or more different layers such as nonmagnet, insulator, ferromagnet, antiferromagnet, and superconductor, have been widely used in current and likely future spintronics devices. Their many intriguing magnetic properties are originated from a variety of magnetic interactions at relevant length scales at or near interfaces and between different constituent layers as well as laterally different regions in chemical and magnetic heterogeneity. The fundamental properties can thus differ along depth and laterally in the film plane, depending on their relevant coupling length scales. The entire properties may be characterized by interface properties and/or the depth-varying properties of the individual constituent layers, and lateral inhomogeneity as well. It is a challenge to investigate both depth-varying properties and lateral heterogeneity in such heteromagnetic nanostructures. In this talk, soft x-ray magneto-optical effect as a nanometer scale probe of a variety of heteromagnetic structures is presented and its related noble techniques are introduced. For instances, magnetization vector imaging to investigate vector spin configurations in the film plane is presented, as well as the Kerr rotation, ellipticity, and intensity measurements as a depth sensitive probe on the atomic scales.
