In the present study, laboratory tests including the seepage-induced consolidation test, suction test, and desiccation shrinkage test are performed to investigate characteristics of the desiccation shrinkage in reclaimed hydraulic fills. Soil samples for laboratory tests are obtained from three sites (districts of Haenam, Kogeum and Koheung in Chunnam area). Desiccation shrinkage settlement caused by three dimensional volume change is numerically evaluated using finite difference technique based on the governing equation proposed by Abu-Hejleh & Znidarcic. Also characteristics of the desiccation shrinkage analyzed from the test results are used as input data for numerical evaluations. Further predicted total settlements including the self-weight consolidation settlement are compared with values measured at the site of Haenam district. Finally, effects of parameters related to the desiccation shrinkage on settlements are examined.
Gravity and magnetic surveys were carried out to investigate the three-dimensional configuration and characteristics of the landfills at Nanjido waste disposal site. For terrain correction and three-dimensional density inversion of gravity data an algorithm, which calculates the gravity effect of a three-dimensional body by using the solid angle method, is developed. This algorithm has been proved to give more accurate terrain correction values for the small survey area having varied topography like Nanjido site as compared with widely used methods such as Hammer's method and multiquadric equation method. Density inversion of gravity anomaly data gives very useful information about the lateral and vertical variation of the landfills, which can be used to discriminate the kinds of wastes. The average density of filled materials appears to be $1.7\;g/cm^3$ which is much higher than the value $(0.8\;g/cm^3)$ estimated by Seoul City. The lateral variation of density shows high correlation with the pattern of ongoing depression of the landfills. The northern region of the landfill no. 1, which shows low density and high depression, is closely associated with the industrial waste and sludge filled area. The magnetic anomaly data provide information about relative concentration of magnetic materials, which is also very useful to investigate characteristics of the fills. Several high positive anomaly regions on the reduced-to-pole magnetic anomaly map are appeared to be associated with the industrial waste fills, but certain industrial waste fills show low negative anomalies. This kind of magnetic information can be used in selecting drilling locations over landfills away from buried metal products during the stabilization process.

In the preliminary investigation (Park et al., 2009), the use of compressional wave velocity and its measurement techniques were proposed as a new quality control measure for trackbed fills. The methodology follows exactly the same procedure as the density control, except the density being replaced by the compressional wave velocity involving consistently with resilient modulus of design stage. The specifications for the control also include field compaction water content of optimum moisture content ${\pm}2%$ as well as the compressional wave velocity. In this sequel paper, crosshole and resonant column tests were performed as well direct-arrival method and laboratory compressional wave measurements to verify the practical applicability of a methodology far the new quality control procedure based upon compressional wave velocity. The stress-modified crosshole results reasonably well agree with the direct-arrival values, and the resonant column test results also agree well with the field crosshole results. The compressional wave velocity turned out to be an excellent control measure for trackbed fills both in the theoretical and practical point of view.

Volume change of the dredged soils is composed of loss amount of the soil particles flowing over an outflow weir with water and settlements due to both the self-weight consolidation in reclaimed layer and the desiccation at the surface of reclaimed layer. In order to estimate the amount of soil particles flowing over an outflow weir with water, the breakage theory and the results of hydrometer analyses. To verify a validity of the proposed procedure, evaluated loss ratio is compared with various estimates from the other existing methods.

The quality of track-bed fills of railways has been controlled by field measurements of density $({\gamma}_d)$ and the results of plate-load tests. The control measures are compatible with the design procedures whose design parameter is $k_{30}$ for both ordinary-speed railways and high-speed railways. However, one of fatal flaws of the design procedures that there are no simple laboratory measurement procedures for the design parameters ($k_{30}$ or, $E_{v2}$ and $E_{v2}/E_{v1}$) in design stage. A new quality control procedure, in parallel with the advent of the new design procedure, is being proposed. This procedure is based upon P-wave velocity involving consistently the evaluation of design parameters in design stage and the field measurements during construction. The Key concept of the procedure is that the target value for field compaction control is the P-wave velocity determined at OMC using modified compaction test, and direct-arrival method is used for the field measurements during construction. The procedure was verified at a test site and the p-wave velocity turned out to be an excellent control measure. The specifications for the control also include field compaction water content of OMC${\pm}$2% as well as the p-wave velocity.

In the present study, mainly to determine the embarkation time of equipment in dredged clay fills, an analytical approach is performed to predict a variation of the undrained shear strength in the outermost layer. In this approach, Gibson's non-dimensional linear constant defining the relationship between the void ratio and the effective stress is employed. Also in this approach, void ratios and settlements associated with the volume change due to the self-consolidation and the desiccation shrinkage are evaluated at various elapsed times based on the finite difference solution technique proposed by the authors(1999) and the developed computer program named as DSCON. Predicted results(water content ratio, unit weight and undrained shear strength) are compared with those of laboratory model tests conducted with soil samples obtained from the Koheung site. Based on the predicted undrained shear strengths, possible embarkation time of a equipment is also evaluated. In addition, further analyses are made to indirectly verify the efficiency of the analytical approach proposed in the present study using the PSDDF computer program which can consider the drainage efficiency.
It is very iterative and complicated work to enter the personal information every time one fills the form-based resume or one joins the new membership page on the internet. Although there are some systems that have the personal information on the computer and fill the membership page automatically, their accuracies are not often satisfactory in that the fields and their values do not match exactly. The research proposes and implements a system that has user's information on the computer and reasons and fills the information automatically that a membership web page(target page) requests using the personal information ontology. During the reasoning process, the target page is analyzed to extract the requested fields. Then the requested field names are converted to the standard field names using synonym ontology. The converted requested fields find the appropriate level in the personal information ontology using ontology match making to generate the final field value. The system not only finds the similar fields but also generates the exact field values by reasoning on the information ontology hierarchy. By experimenting with several membership pages on the web, the system showed higher accuracy over the existing systems. The system can be easily applicable to the cases where one iteratively fills the same information such as resume form.

The quality of railroad trackbed fills has been controlled by field measurements of density and bearing resistance of plate-load tests. The control measures are compatible with the design procedures whose design parameter is $k_{30}$ for both ordinary-speed railways and high-speed railways. However, one of fatal flaws of the design procedures is that there are no simple laboratory measurement procedures for the design parameters ($k_{30}$ or, $E_{v2}$ and $E_{v2}/E_{v1}$) in design stage. To overcome the defect, the compressional wave velocity was adopted as a control measure, in parallel with the advent of the new design procedure, and its measurement technique was proposed in the preliminary investigation. The key concept of the quality control procedure is that the target value for field compaction control is the compressional wave velocity determined at optimum moisture content using modified compaction test, and direct-arrival method is used for the field measurements during construction, which is simple and reliable enough for practice engineers to access. This direct-arrival method is well-suited for such a shallow and homogeneous fill lift in terms of applicability and cost effectiveness. The sensitivity of direct-arrival test results according to the compaction quality was demonstrated at a test site, and it was concluded that compressional wave velocity can be effectively used as quality control measure. The experimental background far the companion study (Park et al., 2009) was established through field and laboratory measurements of the compressional wave velocity.
The mechanism of load transfer by punching shear in pile-supported embankments is investigated. Based on the geometric configuration of the punching shear observed in sand fills on soft ground, a theoretical analysis is carried out to predict the embankment loads transferred on a cap beam according to punching shear developed in pile-supported embankments. The equation presented by the theoretical analysis was able to consider the effect of various factors affecting the vertical loads transferred on the cap beam. The reliability of the presented theoretical equation is investigated by comparing it with the results of a series of model tests. The model tests were performed on cap beams, which had two types of width; one is narrow width and the other is wide width. Sand filling was performed through seven steps. Two types of loading pattern were applied at each filling step; one is the long-term loading, in which sand fills at each filling step were kept for 24 hours, the other is the short-term loading, in which sand fills at each filling step were kept for 2 hours. The vertical loads measured in all model tests show good agreement with the ones predicted by the theoretical equation. Finally, the predicted vertical loads also show good agreement with the vertical loads measured in a well-instrumented pile-supported embankment in field, where cap beams were placed on too wide space.
