In this study, an experimental method for the selection of optimal welding condition was proposed in the fillet weld which was done over the tack weld. This method used the response surface analysis in which the leg length and the reinforcement height were chosen as the quality variables of the weld bead profile. The overall desirability function, which was combined desirability function fur the two quality variables, was employed as the objective function for getting the optimal welding condition. In the experiments, the target values of the leg length and the reinforcement height are 6m and zero respectively for the horizontal fillet weld of 10mm thickness mild steel. The optimal welding conditions could predict the weld bead profile(leg length and reinforcement height) as 6.00mm and 0.19mm without tack weld and 6.00mm and 0.48mm with tack weld. from a series of welding test, it was revealed that a uniform weld bead can be obtained by adopting the optimal welding condition which was determined according to the method proposed.
Fatigue failure modes of load-carrying cruciform weld joints are dependent on the characteristics of the fatigue crack initiation and propagation from the weld toe or the weld root. In this study, constant amplitude fatigue tests on load-carrying fillet welded specimen carried out, and fatigue strengths were evaluated. Also, an attempt is made to develop a new analytical model with more accuracy to predict the fatigue crack propagation life of fillet welded cruciform joints of SWS 490B steels containing lack of penetration defects. From the result of this study, fatigue crack growth characteristics of load-carrying fillet welded cruciform joints, containing lack of penetration defects are found to be affected by the weld geometry, stress range and microstructures of the weld zone.
There was extreme improvement in the processing result of weld toe, but there is possibility that the fatigue failure occurs from the weld root part where the fatigue strength became low relatively. This study did the fatigue test at the cross rib specimens which implemented a partial penetration weld to improve the fatigue strength of the weld root part. As a result of the fatigue test of the partial penetration weld and the fillet weld specimens, almost the same fatigue strength appeared. Because the fatigue failure began from toe, there was not a reinforcement effect in the weld root part by the partial penetration weld. So, it examined fatigue strength at the partial penetration welding specimens which processed toe to stop the fatigue failure of toe part. As a result, there was big fatigue strength improvement from the partial penetration weld than the fillet weld. Therefore, if fatigue crack occurrence can be restrained from toe, it thinks that the fatigue strength of the root part can improve by the partial penetration weld, after all, it thinks that the overall fatigue life can improve.
Ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation (UNDE) technique is commonly used for detecting inner defects in the materials. Recently, new methods are trying to apply for detecting surface and subsurface flaws using Rayleigh wave or creeping wave. These techniques, however, have following problems. Echo amplitude is remarkably affected by the surface conditions and discrimination of echo pattern is usually difficult because shear wave propagate in the material at the same time. We can apply surface SH-wave(which is horizontally polarized shear wave traveling along near surface layer) technique to detect surface flaws. In this paper, directivity, distance amplitude characteristics and detectability of surface flaws at fillet weld hills of the 5 MHz and 2 MHz surface flaws at fillet weld hills of the 5 MHz and 2 MHz surface Sh-wave are experimentally investigated. As a result of the study, it was found out that these techniques are valuable for the detection of fatigue cracks at fillet weld heels which can not be detected by other ultrasonic techniques such as angle beam technique and which are inaccessible for non-destructive testings e.g. MT(magnetic particle testing) or PT(liquid penetrant testing).
In this paper weld distortion both in butt and fillet welds by flux cored arc welding has been investigated by changing welding parameters such as heat input and plate thickness, and the weld distortion was expressed as a function of welding parameters adopting the inherent strain theory as proposed by Watanabe and Satoh in 1961. As results of the research it is proposed that transverse shrinkage in root pass butt welds in proportional to ln[(Q/t_-tan.theta.] where Q is heat input(cal/mm), t is plate thickness(mm), and 2.theta. is groove angle(degree), and angular distortion .phi.(radian) in one pass of fillet welds has the following relationship: .phi..var.(Q/ $t^{1.5}$)$^{3}$exp[-(Q/ $t^{1.5}$ )$^{2}$3/] These equations provide us with basic tools to predict the amount of weld distortion in welded structures.
Among various welding parameters, the welding current which is inversely proportional to the tip-to-workpiece distance in GMAW is an essential parameter to monitor the GMAW process of horizontal fillet joints. For the case of weld defect such as overlap in horizontal fillet welding, therefore, the signal processing for process monitoring or automatic seam tracking should be modified by considering the weld pool surface geometry including the corresponding weld defect. In other words, the adequate signal processing algorithm is indispensible to improve the performance of the arc sensor. However, arc sensor algorithm already developed usually focus on weld seam tracing but do not considering the weld qualities. In this paper, various experiments were carried out to investigate the tendencies of the weld defects when weaving motion is added, and the experimental method based on 2$^n$ factorial design was proposed for deriving the mathematical model between the leg length and the various welding conditions. Moreover, a signal processing method based on the artificial neural network(Adaptive Resonance Theory) was proposed far discriminating the current signal of sound weld beads from that of weld beads with overlap. Finally, the algorithm for weld seam tracking combined with the mathematical modeling and the signal processing method was carried out to track the weld line in conjunction with the improvement of the weld qualities. The reliability of the proposed algorithms were evaluated through various experiments, which showed that the proposed algorithms could be effectively used for arc welding automation.
This paper presents an analytical solution to predict the transient temperature distribution in fillet arc welding including the effect of molten metal. The solution is obtained by solving a transient three-dimensional heat conduction equation with convection boundary conditions on the surfaces of a plate, and mapping the infinite plate onto the fillet weld geometry with energy equation. The electric heat input on the fillet weld and on the infinite plate is assumed to have a combination of two bivariate Gaussian distribution. To check the validity of the solution. FCA welding experiments were performed under various welding conditions. The actual isotherms of the weldment cross-sections at various distances from the arc start point are compared with those of simulation result.

In GMA(Gas Metal Arc)Welding, the weld size that is a locally melted area of a workpiece is one of the most important considerations in determining the strength of a welded structure. Variations in the weld power and the welding heat flux may affect the weld pool formation and ultimately the size of the weld. Therefore, an accurate prediction of the weld size requires a precise analysis of the weld thermal cycle. In this study, a model which can estimate the weld bead geometry and a method for thermal analysis, including the model, are suggested. In order to analyze the weld bead geometry, a mathematical model was developed with transformed coordinates to apply to the horizontal fillet joints. A heat flow analysis was performed with a two dimensional finite element model that was adopted for computing the base metal melting zone. The reliability of the proposed model and the thermal analysis was evaluated through experiments, and the results showed that the proposed model was very effective for predicting the weld bead shape and good correspondence in melting zone of the base metal.

The portion of thin plate is expected to increases as to the development of design and fabrication technology. The weld-induced deformation is more serious in thin plates than in thick plates because heat affect zone of thin plates is wider than that of thick plates, and in addition internal and external constraints much more influence upon weld-induced deformation of thin plates. This paper is aimed at applying the mechanical tensioning method to fillet weld of thin plates to reduce the weld-induced deformation. For this purpose, fillet welding tests have been carried out for several thin plate specimens with varying plate thickness and magnitude of tensile load. From the present study, it has been found that the tensioning method is effective on reduction of weld-induced deformation.
