Brackets for an automatic transmission are usually used to connect the transmission with adjacent components in a vehicle. Fillet areas of brackets are one of the most important areas to design the brackets because the areas are easily fractured when the brackets are subjected to external loads. In this study, a new design around the fillet area of the bracket is suggested and improved effects of the proposed design are proved through the comparison of safety factors with the current design. The safety factors are calculated through the fatigue analysis via a commercial code, FEMFAT.

In this study, an optimal shape design was performed on a fillet model which is subject to surface traction through minimizing the maximum stress of the fillet. A 2-dimensional quadratic isoparametirc element with 8 nodes was used in stress analysis for finite element method, and Hooke-Jeeves direct search algorithm was adopted for optimi- zation. From the resulting optimal shape, it was found that the maxium von Mises stress on the boundary of fillet was reduced by 36%, compared to other paper in which the cross sectional area of fillet was minimized. In conclusion, a real optimal fillet shape could be obtained in the viewpoint of yielding, and more pratical fillet design could be accomplished.

In the paper, it was attempted to verify how the strength around fillet area of shifted gear would be affected by variables such as number of teeth, shifted value, and diametral pitch. Thereafter, the Lewis' tooth factor of the shifted gear was computed in terms of previously mentioned variables in order to observe the characteristics of stress change related from tooth factor and tooth number with the parameter of shifted values and diametral pitches. From the results of quasi-theoretical values by Finite Element Method(F.E.M.)and experimental values through the photo-elastic tests, the followings were identified. The more the number of gear teeth increased, the more the profile of the tooth became close to that of rack, and accordingly the stresses in the fillet area decreased significantly in certain range. Furthermore, as the shifted value and pressure angle increase the stresses tend decrease. Moreover, the stresses analyzed by F.E.M. in the filled area became around 1.22 times larger than the stresses computed by Lewis' form factor, and this is supposed as on influence of the stress concentration in fillet area.
In Korea Gas Corporation, as one of the pipeline repairing methods, damaged pipelines are sometimes treated with a temporally employment of split sleeve. On conducting the repair process, circumferential fillet and longitudinal groove welding usually must be included. For the case of groove welding, a considerable amount of R&D have been carried out related to property changes, while few study on the property change in fillet welding has been conducted. In this paper, so as to confirm the specification of fillet welding in terms of safety and reliability, properties changed by fillet welding were investigated for two welding processes. Qualifying tests such as reviewing macrostructure and nick-break tests were performed according to API 1104 and ASME section IX. In addition, tensile properties and hardness were evaluated according to KS B0841 and BS 4515. The fillet weld prepared by the qualified procedure showed melting depth of 0.8∼1.3mm and heat affected zone of 2.8∼3.4mm length. No crack and lack of penetration were observed. And the results of hardness and nick-break tests satisfied code requirements. The area crossed by fillet and groove welding line was found to have minimal tensile strength.

Finite element analysis along with DOE scheme has been performed to obtain robust design of crankshaft assembly. This study focused on obtaining optimized fillet radius of crankshaft mainly by statistical approach. 27 design cases using 3 factors with 3 levels are constructed by design of experiment. Changes of design factors and noise factor may influence the durability of crankshaft system. General two stages of robust design may enhance the durability of crankshaft model. Increasing crank arm thickness was adopted as a shrink step and change of fillet radius was used as a shift step. By combining these two steps, the stress concentration at the fillet area is reduced and adequate fillet radius is determined for the robust design of crankshaft.

Strength evaluation was carried out for the fillet and oil hole of crankshaft of medium speed diesel HiMSEN engine to verify initial concept design. Alternating torque obtained from torsional vibration analysis and radial force due to firing pressure were applied. It was assumed that the maximum alternating torque and radial force occur simultaneously. Weak points in view of fatigue are proceeding fillet and crank pin fillet area and the minimum normalized fatigue safety factor is 1.17 at crank pin fillet. The fatigue strength of the oil hole was evaluated to verify the effect of the surface roughness of the oil hole. As results, the specific level of the inner surface roughness and the polishing depth of the oil hole for sufficient fatigue strength was suggested. The maximum stress value and stress distribution at the inner surface of the oil hole can be easily estimated at initial design stage by the newly developed method.

Laser-assisted machining (LAM) is known to be an effective and economical technique for improving the machinability of difficult-to-machine materials. In the LAM method, material is preheated using a laser heat source and then the preheated area is removed by following cutting tool. For laser-assisted turning (LAT), the configuration of the system is not complicated because laser irradiates from a fixed position. In contrast, laser-assisted milling (LAMill) system is not only complicated but also difficult to control because laser heat source must always move ahead of the cutting tool along a three dimensional (3D) tool path. LAMill is still early stage and cannot yet be used to machine finished products with 3D shapes. In this study, a laser-assisted fillet milling process was developed for machining 3D shapes. There are no prior studies combining fillet milling and LAMill. Laser-assisted fillet milling strategy was proposed, and effective depth of cut (EDOC) was obtained using thermal analysis. Experiments were designed using response surface method and cutting force prediction equations were developed using statistical analysis and regression analysis. The optimum machining conditions were also proposed, and energy efficiency of the LAMill was analyzed by comparing the specific cutting energy of conventional machining (CM) and LAMill.

This paper presents development of a high speed rotating arc sensor system using a microprocessor based controller with tracking function for a complicate curved fillet welding line, The welding tip connected to the torch body is eccentrically positioned from the centerline of the torch, The area during one rotating cycle is divided into 4 regions of front, rear, right and left in welding direction of the torch tip to determine the horizontal deviation between the welding seam and the torch position. The average value at each region is calculated using the regional current values and a low pass filter incorporated with the moving average method is implemented. The effectiveness of the developed system is proven through the experimental results for several kinds of complicate curved fillet welding lines.
The pedicled fillet flap concept has been successfully applied in both the upper and lower extremities for the treatment of difficult wounds. However, in case of complete extremity amputation in eletrical burn patient, the transfer of pedicled flaps from the amputated part is not possible. In such instances, we have designed total arm musculocutaneous free-fillet flaps from the amputated limb to provide wound coverage, when replantation of the amputated part was contraindicated. now we present such a case. This technique allows immediate wound coverage without the morbidity of an additional donor site. The flap provides the ideal combination of large surface area, muscle bulk, and long vascular pedicle. It can be dissected rapidly to minimize ischemic time and could therefore be applicable to traumatic forequarter amputations.

In GMA(Gas Metal Arc)Welding, the weld size that is a locally melted area of a workpiece is one of the most important considerations in determining the strength of a welded structure. Variations in the weld power and the welding heat flux may affect the weld pool formation and ultimately the size of the weld. Therefore, an accurate prediction of the weld size requires a precise analysis of the weld thermal cycle. In this study, a model which can estimate the weld bead geometry and a method for thermal analysis, including the model, are suggested. In order to analyze the weld bead geometry, a mathematical model was developed with transformed coordinates to apply to the horizontal fillet joints. A heat flow analysis was performed with a two dimensional finite element model that was adopted for computing the base metal melting zone. The reliability of the proposed model and the thermal analysis was evaluated through experiments, and the results showed that the proposed model was very effective for predicting the weld bead shape and good correspondence in melting zone of the base metal.
