The last 30 years have been significant worldwide growth in the use of EPS as a lightweight fill material. A new construction method was introduced, which reduces earth pressure acting on culvert and conduit by placing a thin layer of EPS. This paper analyzes the compressible inclusion function of EPS and geogrid which can results in reduction of earth pressure by arching that is the behaviour of soil-structure system involving redistribution of soil stress around the structure. Field test was conducted to evaluate the reduction of vertical earth pressure using EPS and geogrid inclusion. Based on field test it is found that the magnitude of reduced vertical earth pressure was about 24~50% compared to conventional method.
This paper describes an parallell computing algorithm in Gauss elimination of Jacobian matrix to large-scale power system. The structure of Jacobian matrix becomes different according to ordering method of buses. In sequential computation buses are ordered to minimize the number of fill-in in the triangulation of the Jacobian matrix. The proposed method using ND(nested dissection) ordering develops the parallelism in the Gauss elimination to have balance of computing load among processes and each processor uses the sequential computation method to preserve the sparsity of matrix.

Concrete-Face Rock-Fill Dams (CFRDs) are rock-fill dams with watertight-concrete slabs on its upstream slope instead of its central earth cores. The design for CFRDs are still largely empirical and typically based on past experiences. This paper presents a description of the concrete face slabs and leakage behaviors of two post-constructed CFRDs based on the data gathered through instrumentation during the initial impoundment. The results show that the strain on the concrete face slab and the horizontal displacements of the vertical slab joints are slightly affected by both the seasonal temperature change and water loading during the initial impoundment. The deformation of perimetric joints are less affected by the temperature change, however it is significantly affected by the water loading during the initial impoundment. The leakage rate is significantly affected by the hydrostatic load and the deformation of the perimetric joints.

Consolidation of dredged fill has become important task for site treatment. The variation of stratum thickness during consolidation processing needs to be taken into consideration since hydraulic fill would go through a much larger scale strain than land soil when it is subject to a load. In this study, the consolidation period considering the variation of stratum thickness was analyzed and compared the results with those of existing consolidation studies which did not consider the variation of stratum thickness. According to the results of the study, the consolidation period of the ground with a larger strain was calculated more close to observed value in case of Mikasa theory which takes the variation of stratum thickness into consideration.
Researches on the induced trench method using compressible materials such as clay, mud, straw have been performed to reduce the load acting on buried conduits under a high fill in USA and Canada. And in-situ tests on load reductionmethod using EPS block as a compressible inclusion have been performed in Japan and Norway. Using a EPS block as a compressible materials can have various benefits such as cost-effective design, enlargement of safety and easy construction of structure under high fills. This paper analyzes the arching material function of EPS which can result in reduction of earth pressure by arching effect in Corrugated Steel Pipe. A series of tests were conducted to evaluate the reduction of earth pressure on conduits using EPS. Based on field test it is found that the magnitude of vertical earth pressure on conduits was reduced to about 35∼40% compared with conventional flexible conduit systems.

The concrete wall is the most useful of retaining structure which can obtain the engineering stability, but has problems that is not friendly with nature environment in a fine view, such as poor rear drainage, and shrinkage crack by temperature difference, etc. Because of this problems, the research for a segmental crib retaining wall has been performed. A segmental crib retaining wall is quickly and easily erected because is possible to be erected as the individual members, and is not sensitive to differential settlement and earthquakes. Also, it shows effective drainage and has a friendly advantage with nature environment because of being able to be planted with vines and shrubs in retaining walls The design of crib retaining walls has traditionally been based on classical soil mechanics theories. These theories, originally derived by Rankine(1857) and Coulomb(1776), assume that the wall acts as a rigid body. This assumption results in failure being predicted by either monolithic overturning or base sliding mechanisms. However, the wall consists of individual members which have been created a three dimensional grid. This grid confines an fill mass which becomes part of the wall. The filled wall resists the earth pressure with the same mechanism of classical gravity walls. Because of the flexibility of the individual segment, it allows relative movement between the individual members within the wall. The three dimensional flexible grid leads to stress redistribution when the wall is subjected to external or fill loads. Due to the flexibility and the stress redistribution, the failure of segmental crib wall consists of not only overturing and base sliding but the local deformation and the failure between the segmental members. It has been researched in the field that due to this flexibility and load redistribution, serviceability failure of segmental crib walls is unlikely to be due to overturning or base sliding. Therefore, in this study, the relative displacement appearance of retaining wall due to variation of inclination is measured to examine this behavior characteristics. Also, the behavior characteristics of retaining walls by surcharge load, and location of acting point of retaining wall rear, and the displacement characteristics and deflections are estimated about the existence and nonexistence of Rear Stretcher performing an role in transmitting earth pressure of Header and Stretcher organizing retaining walls. This research focuses on the characteristics due to the behavior of retaining walls. This research focuses on the characteristics due to the behavior of retaining walls.

This study presents a numerical model that is capable of simulating the evolution of mining pit in a stream. The numerical model is based on the quasi-steady assumption that the flow is steady with time-dependent morphological change. This hypothesis is valid due to the fact that the stream morphology changes over a long period compared with the time of flow change. Before applications, numerical experiments are carried out with two total load formulas such as Engelund and Hansen's (1967) and Ackers and White's (1973). It is found that the use of Engelund and Hansen's formula reproduces evolution of mining pit best compared with simulated profiles in Parker (2004). Then, the model is applied to two laboratory experiments in the literature. In general, the numerical model simulates properly the evolution of mining pit in laboratory open-channels. However, it is found that the model does not reproduce head-cutting, propagating upstream, and under-estimates the wave of the bed, propagating downstream, after finishing the re-fill of the mining pit.
Coarse granular materials such as gravel and crushed stone have been used as an important fill materials to large soil structure of railway, road, dam and so on. Although much studies for general soil materials have been carried out domestically, the studies for coarse materials were insufficient. Particularly, it is the level in which the study for dynamic properties(Elastic modulus and damping ratio) of coarse materials, applies the foreign country literature. This is due to the lack of large equipment for element test. But large soil structures made of coarse granular materials are generally important infrastructures. Therefore, the reliable design parameters for coarse materials should be obtained for safe and economic design, construction and maintenance. Triaxial test is the laboratory test method that is capable of controlling a confining pressure and boundary condition. In this project, we made a multi-purpose large triaxial testing system. This testing system is able to test coarse granular materials with maximum particle diameter of 100mm and support both the load control and displacement control. The load cell is installed inside of triaxial cell and the axial displacement is measured locally in order to control and measure more accurately in the small strain level. The verification test of this testing system was carried out with urethane verification specimens. So, from now on the useful information for coarse granular materials are expected to suggested by performing many tests with various material and condition.

Researches on the induced trench method using compressible materials such as clay, mud, straw, or EPS block have been performed to reduce the load acting on buried conduits under a high fill. The induced trench method has the problems that the arching area due to the compressible arching material is one dimensional or localized in a narrow zone. The main purpose of this study is to solve the problems of the induced trench method mentioned above. The various types of laboratory model tests are conducted to find the effects of the variations of EPS block width, multilayer application, soil density, and diameter of the flexible steel pipe. A series of model tests was conducted to evaluate the reduction of earth pressure on conduits using EPS block. Based on modeling test it is found that the magnitude of vertical earth pressure on conduits was reduced about 60% compared with conventional flexible conduit systems.

This paper is to analyze the behaviors of tunnel support by TDR(Time Domain Reflectometry) sensor using electrical pulse. To analysis the behaviors of tunnel support, Copper tape as sensing materials was studied for on-site installation. Copper tape to the top of the glass tape, foam tape, and shielding the lower part was used electromagnetic shield sheet. For a high sensitivity to load and fill out the measurement noise emissions has been developed for the production of materials. This sensing material through the tunnel model tests for the change by surcharge load in TDR data were analyzed. Varing stiffness and support of conditions were determined the change of TDR data through PVC pipe tunnel section model tests. By comparing TDR data and finite element analysis, the behaviors of the tunnel support materials were analyzed qualitatively.
